I think a lot of us believed (hoped?) they actually had a plan this offseason and then heading into the season. Unless Stan can work some magic the next few days it really seems like they had no f***ing clue what they were actually doing and were just shitting in one hand and wishing in the other.

f*** me, get gifted 2 generational players and just completely f*** them at almost every single turn with pure incompetence.
The plan was to accrue cap space and they botched that too for the sake of adding Kapanen and Klingberg, now who knows what's going on with the LTIR money and we're freaking 4 days away.
Letting Holloway go for Kapanen and Klingberg essentially, F me.

I wonder if Katz knew about the NMC's this summer? There has been chatter that with the team looking underwhelming, and the offersheet madness, he was calling 20x a day asking wtf are they gonna do. I wonder if this was hidden until recently, even from him, and that is partially why he was bugging out so much more?

Idk, I could see him being less hands on in the aftermath of the finals run and getting sucked in by JJ's hype.

Perfect description or should we say, fools that were handed gold.

Chia is really the worst of them, this guy had McDavid, Draisaitl, a prime Hall and Eberle, Nurse and a treasure chest of picks and just about turned it into dust. Holland, for all his faults, did a commendable job of building it back up after the shitpile Chia left him, Holland's drafting is actually a bit underrated in retrospect, then JJ sort of tore it all down again. Letting Holloway go is the one that's really killing me, I loved that kid, and the Oilers could have had this major bargain for the next 2 years at 2.2m. Major ugh on that one.

Holland was below average. More misses than hits.

Despite that mediocre title he's leagues better than what came before him and it's quickly looking like he would also be an improvement on what came after.

The Oilers "plan" has been the same from the very moment he was drafted: Do the bare minimum and hope this one player wins you the Cup all on his own.

Now it’s a lot clearer and I can see why management is exploring trade options for Kane‘s contract.

Everyone in the top 6 have full trade protection lol. They can’t be moved, that includes Henrique.

While Kane has a partial trade protection. His list of 16 teams are all contenders. He frees up the largest available cap hit.

This isn’t equivalent to backing yourself into a corner.. it’s basically a fat drunk trying to squeeze out of a single narrow hole 🕳

For the record I’m not suggesting we trade Kane. More so understanding the reason why management is doing what they’re doing in regards to Kane’s trade options.

our best bet would be a golaie that doesnt speak a lick of english to not let schwartz make him worse
A scout in Kazakhstan might be helpful.

Below average yet still better than the previous and next GM. Low bars being set here in Edmonton

Holland actually had them set up decently going into this season. Already had a Cup contending team full of vets but also solid young players with speed and size mixed in and two guys in Holloway and Borberg that could be building blocks and extend a Cup window. Now??? Poof, gone for aging players with declining performance who can't be moved now without attaching assets.
In fairness to JJ and Bowman, contracts like the Nurse and Kane ones not to mention the dead cap of Campbell made the Oilers susceptible to offer sheets but, still.... how do you not match a $2.2m for a bright young player like Holloway who loved it here? Goodness gracious.

Honestly, knowing now about the NMCs it makes more sense that we were desperate to get Klingberg. We didn't have the flexibility and cap space to get anyone making more.

Bowman & Jackson not only handcuffed themselves with all these NMCs, but also managed to tie themselves to the railroad tracks ontop of it.

Will the ineptness ever end? If I’m asking tge question, I know the answer but this org has literal shit for brains.
I really think Katz needs to just purge the entire front office, even the guys who aren't directly involved in hockey ops. There's too much rot in the org.

Chia did some good things like signing Draisaitl long term but then (like you said) he made some terrible moves which hurt the team.
Holland did make some good moves and then he undid a lot of those good moves by signing Campbell to a 5 year deal. A major gaff.
Jackson hurt the team with his moves this past year. For example...letting Holloway walk and signing Skinner was not a net positive for this team.

It seems that every GM in the McDavid era cant figure out how to maintain forward progress.

It kind of seems like they didn't match the offer sheets because they really had no idea what was going on with Kane. Trading him prior to March 1st wasn't even an option, so you really couldn't go into LTIR until you had some sort of read on the timeline.

I don't know if accruing cap space was ever actually the plan, it seems more like they just had no idea when Kane planned on coming back.

Except they totally did though as long as they waited for the deadline.

The Oilers were accruing cap space just fine before they added two bit players in Kapanen and Klingberg.

I wouldn't blame Jeff Skinner for requesting a trade. Knoblauch has not utilized him properly.

If I was him, I wouldn’t waive lol. Just finish the year. Moving sucks. If he does move to another team, and doesn’t produce he looks worse.

During the offseason he can just claim that his production was hampered by not getting enough opportunity and pointing out that he was one of the more productive ES players and he wouldn’t exactly be lying.

This guy is a nobody but he does work for Edmonton Sports Talk who do have connections to the team. Skip the last minute where he says an Oiler has requested a trade. I wonder if it's skinner

This to me suggests Kane, which would explain why the Oilers are looking to move him even though he is going to be back after the start of the playoffs.

Basically Jeff Jackson f***ed himself.

Honestly bringing back Kostin now for peanuts would actually make a lot of sense given the handcuffs the front office is in.

He's fast, he hits, he fights, he isn't freaking 34 years old, he has a good shot release, Kane probably has to go out. There's not many options available for cheaper.
