Imo Campbell was a great goalie to try. It was dumb to commit 5 years at 5 million aav though. However many argued that Campbell's deeper stats were full of red flags. There are some red flags with Gibson too but he played a lot more games than Campbell and played on a worse team. With Gibson we'd also be committing to him for just 1.5 years so it's not that much risk
It's a massive risk. Because those 1.5 years are the years surrounding McDavid's extension. If Gibson shits the bed and you've tied up the majority of your cap flexibility on that one deal, you're f***ed six ways from Sunday.

If they were willing to take back Evander Kane, that offsets some of the risk. But you're likely raising your acquisition cost to do so. And what it that realistically?

Fair but if we don’t improve on Skinner we are wasting the rest of McDavid and Draisaitls prime.

Were Yak and JP really rushed though?

Yak had the lockout time to hone his game - he chose to go back to KHL instead of sticking around in NA.
JP agent was a dbag that had some alleged under the table thing with Chia about bringing him in and giving him 'guaranteed' ice time

Even if we disregard their rock for brains, they hurt themselves just as much with how unprepared they were for the NHL
Scouts that I talk to feel they were. That they should have spent time in the AHL developing. Their games weren't NHL ready at all.

I've never heard that about JP's agent, but if that's the case, that should have been known at the draft and been a red flag.

Can't make this shit up lol

If Kane is healthy before the playoffs we should fire everyone and I'm not exaggerating.

Honestly if he’s healthy before playoffs and wants to come back early, current management is just kind of screwed. Kane had a nmc previously given out and like 95% of players would play along if they want the best chance to win a cup.

But you can blame JJ for his signings on July 1 without taking care of Holloway. He literally backed himself into a corner and now he’s backed Bowman into a corner.

If it actually turns out that Kane doesn’t want to play nice, then JJ is once again foolish for not allowing himself enough cap space to work around the uncertainty.

It's so joever.

With the timing of these moves, with Davos contract coming up; JJ might have f***ed this team worse than Chia or Holland did.

How the f*** does Arvidsson get that deal after an injured season? Absolutely mental

I agree Gibson at full cap is too risky.

However going into playoffs with this goaltending is almost just as big of a risk in a different way. If Skinner plays like he has all season we aren’t making it past the 2nd round. That will drop an absolute bomb on contract talks.

Just paying the f***ing price for Gibson at this point and get it over with. This management is hopeless, they're not going to get anything done at forward anyway, look at what they did last summer and Bowman was ass for the Hawks for the last several years, he's no genius.

I think we're mostly on the same page here, but my view very simply is that if Kane comes back early that means that either:

A) The Oilers botched their plan for deadline cap space completely, or
B) They didn't even have a plan for deadline cap space to botch

It's a really ugly look either way.

Who says you have to take the entire contract back?
