Cap space will have less value as a weapon with massive growth projections to $95.5 million in 2025-26; $104 in 2026-27; and $113.5 in 2027-28 ($25.5 million over a three year period). If anything, I would anticipate the Oilers as an elite revenue driver franchise will spend their way out of a shitty prospect system while many teams in highly competitive market conditions work within a team budget versus to cap ceilings during these highly inflationary cap jumps.

The Oilers need to get through the next couple of years then the cap ceiling opens up which quite likely starts to separate the league by ability (and willingness) to spend.
This is the reason why I see moving Kane and RV's salaries sooner rather than later.

The Oilers need younger, healthier bodies. Especially if we're expecting another deep run.

I doubt they move Kane this season. This team is small and soft and he is a rare power forward type. They're not going to pay assets to dump him or have his LTIR dough come off their trade deadline buying power. Arvy has been a suspect add who hasn't hit. Still a functional middle roster forward so might see them packaging him within a multiple package type trade that dangles an Oiler high pick for a couple players that require Arvy included to cut down cap considerations. Neither are on expiring contracts so that's a barrier.

This off-season Kane prospectively in play as many will be if the team that Jeff built under performs in the playoffs.

I don't think they move him this season either. I believe the panic is all for none and we're likely operating in LTIR at the deadline.

When it comes to trading either of these players, I think it's possible to move either for a player that helps the roster. Rebuilding teams would value either of them as a potential top six option available at a low risk acquisition cost and little commitment.

I don't see Kane as an Oiler in October 2025.

Somehow getting Kane and Podkolzin to the bottom 6 would drastically improve the team.

If we can combine this with adding a player to the top 6 our forward group will be alive again.

This post season will determine alot of things. It will begin with this trade deadline because the team is not good enough as constructed. This team needs more hard ice, heavy and assertive play style for playoff series hockey.

Wonder if we see a trade after today when the road trip ends

They should get shitcanned because they should have had a contingency plan in place for months just in case this very thing happened that Kane might come back. Instead they signed nothings like Kapanen and Klingberg killing their ability to accrue cap space and now it's hope and pray that Kane doesn't come back for the regular season or have zero deadline flexibility in an "all in" season. People need to get fired for this incompetence if indeed they end up with zero deadline flexibility and are forced into a money in money out situation or, god forbid, attach a 2nd or higher to rid of the Kane contract. What a shit show that could have been avoided altogether.
I’m just going to see how it ends before I get worked up. I’m not expecting much though. I think Jackson and Bowman have too much work to do and are in over their heads. Hopefully I’m wrong.

So the metronome continues to dance between "The LTIR space isn't a guarantee. He could be back by early April" to "After the season, perhaps at some point in the playoffs." This smoke screen feels deliberate.

This isn't MacT, who loved to broadcast what he's doing from the tallest soapbox. This is a guy walking into Best Buy looking for a new TV because the current one broke, but tells the staff he's just browsing.
Now everyone's trying to find the wildest answer "just browsing" could mean.

Considering how noncommittal the Oil are in any comment about the team and what it's doing/what it's looking for, I'm surprised how much stock people are putting on pundits guessing at tea leaves.

My favourite thing about trade deadline is the entertainment of your freakouts. It never disappoints lol.

Carry on!
These last 5 games have been disasters, but it doesn't negate the previous 54 games in which the D was good enough to win games and have the team near the top of the league. Upgrades are needed, but not because of the last 5 games and upgrades will come. Some people are freaking out over nothing and just looking for reason to lose all semblance of being tethered to reality.

Yup agree. I always felt Podkolzin would wind up as a 3/4 line winger. He can do good work there with heavy forecheck, puck retrieval and decent speed. Kane absolutely adds value imo with at worst a hard ice, intimidating power forward game. A bonus if his finishing returns quickly.

Need a bigger skill finisher for their smaller top six wing. They missed on the summer so this unfortunately remains a big need. For me, it's still about a defense that needs another top 4 level blue liner to deepen its top end and protect against any of Nurse, Bouchard, Ekholm, even maybe Kulak going down with injury. In one off regular season play they can roll a couple of games without Nurse. But it heavy playoff series grind game, it will lead to an early exit.

THe problem is people expecting any type of journalistic integrity from sports journalism, or expecting a GM to say the truth, or expect what a GM says on Monday to be true on a Thursdays, Things change.

Dont get panties all bunched up about trades until AFTER the deadline. The amount of "why doen't our GM make trades" whinning is hilarious given the amount deals and signing the Oilers have done over the last 4 years. It reads more like " the team isn't doing what i want, when i want it" so im going to fly off the handle.

Is this J. Quick rumour legit, Or is that girl just spewing stuff?
That girl has never right about anything and only surfaces around this time of year, and people fall for it every year.

her post was an excuse to use puns..nothing more.

That already happened yesterday when I watched the meeting in the white coloured house.

This is just a conspriracy, but the Holloway and Broberg thing smelled so bad that maybe the Blues are trading us someone at the deadline and we had a handshake agreement or something?
