If we had a better mix and a better managed cap Nurse certainly could be an integral part of a champion.

I knew the Oilers were set to fail again the second Bowman stated "the defense is set." And we just finished the finals.

The D isn't deep and it certainly isn't the right mix. The Oilers will miss again. As simple as that.

Darnell Nurse is the exact same player as Seth Jones. Same flaws.

The Florida Panthers have a vastly superior team to the Edmonton Oilers. They have the right mix to be a winner.

If Florida trades for Nurse over Jones they still win... Nurse plays a greasy game and is more up the Panther's alley to be honest.

It's Groundhog Day. I wish I could exit the loop. Because it's the same bullshit every offseason.
Jones is better than Nurse and always has been. Maybe we’re hard on Nurse sometimes but he’s no Jones

imo oilers d group just need 1 defensively competent sizable RHD to work the PK and shutdown minutes... adam larsson would be enough for me to be 100% down with this D. does not need a superstar.

a goalie upgrade would help the whole D too. and maybe a RHC

usually players who run to back to back cup finals with a team gain a ton of value on the trade/UFA market... everyone wants that playoff experience in their group. but when it's the oilers... every player is a cap dump

:dunno: The Oilers have lost 3 contributing players by trade in the last 2 years.

McLeod got a pretty good return
Ceci isn't any good
Kane has significant extenuating circumstances

But bottom line is if you manage your cap space poorly there are consequences, and Edmonton is among the worst teams in the league in this department.

Actually as far managing the cap goes last year was a very very good job of it. Played some serious 4 d chess to be able to ice the roster we did in the post season.

Jones is light years better. He was considered to be the #1 overall pick until Mackinnon went nuclear in junior.

He was always going to be a star but got stuck on an awful Chicago team. Trade Jones and nurse and Jones would shine on a Edmonton team in its window.

$10.5 for Bouchard, $3.85 for Frederic leaves us with just over $2M. Trading Arvidsson is a necessity, but that only brings us to $6M which is like one top 6 forward. Something else has gotta give.
If Bob says we are about to gain a bunch of cap we will get the minimal relief to move forward without really improving one iota. So Arvidsson sounds about right.

That overweight humanoid sold out long ago.

Because that’s what contenders that spend right to the cap do?

Yeah it's definitely not because they spent nearly 20M on players who contribute little to nothing in Nurse, Henrique, Arvidsson, and Skinner.

It's frankly amazing this team is as good as it is considering the amount of money it regularly wastes.

Cutting Nurse out of it, the other three had produced reasonably well before being acquired.

It’s silly to rewrite history just because it didn’t work.

I didn't say anything about what I thought of those moves at the time.

But I'd argue that Skinner and Henrique are mostly the fault of the Oilers and how the coaching staff chose to deploy them, or in Skinners case not deploy him at all.

Again we all know Nurse is a bad contract. A third line centre is a 3 million dollar cost so Henrique is understandable. Arvidsson had his worst season in his career and Skinner was buried by our coach for reasons unbeknownst to anybody. We tried to add 2 proven 20-30 goal scorers would you have preferred we just signed 4th liners and hoped for the best? It didnt work out but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good strategy after making it to game 7 of the finals and one goal short of OT for the cup.

Jones would look the same as Nurse on the Oilers.
