Because you acrue can until you dip into the LtIR space. This was talked about the entire season. We didn’t know if Kane was going to miss the entire season till 24 hours before the deadline.

@Canovin ...

I think we had this EXACT argument before when the debate was whether or not we could match on Holloway/Broberg, and what was a better use of cash.

My argument, was that if we accrue, we can acquire a good defender during the season, near the deadline using accrued space (ended up Klingberg), and then closer to deadline, once/if we know Kane will be gone for the season, we can acquire another *something using LTIR (ended up Walman).

Anyway... the cap works like this (showing annual numbers because easier, but realize cap is calculated on a game-day-by-game-day basis)
Regular = $88M
Kane LTIR = $5.1
Total = $93.1M (but only until Kane comes back)

So we ran a cap of about $87.25M AAV until we acquired Klingberg. Because we were below the regular cap of 88M, we can still accrue... if you are already above $88M, but below 93.1M, you can't accrue. That's the rule on accrual.

Our team actually managed the cap VERY, VERY well this year... I even think there was some 4D chess going on with a few of the prolonged injury breaks.

Why trade Ekholm? Let him heal up to 100% and then he comes back as a solid top 4D for 1 more season and then becomes an UFA. If he wants to stay he'd need to take 3rd pairing $ after next season IMO. You try and move heaven and earth to get rid of Nurse if he would be open to a trade. Then run with Ekholm, Walman and Kulak on LD. Maybe we get someone with more physicality than Kulak for 3rd pairing and PK duties.

There are two assumptions here:

1 - Nurse will waive - highly unlikely if not impossible

2 - When was Ekholm hurt? He had a bad year last year pretty much in its entirety vs. what we are used to with him. On a lot of nights where Bouchard was getting skewered by fans/media he was right there with him or even worse, but he often gets the benefit of the doubt. Was he hurt the whole year? Or was the poor play in the first half age/miles related?

If Nurse is unmovable (likely), then I think we need to be very comfortable that his poor play was strictly due to injury. Bringing back all 4 of our left shot D men would be a mistake IMO. Will just force us to handicap whichever LHD is on his off side and (again) try and figure out who to play with Nurse. Adding to this, I think that the return for Ekholm would likely be strong allowing us to either make a hockey deal of some sort or re-deploy the futures and cap space in net or the Top 6 via trade.

Would be nice if we could get Klingberg back to help facilitate this, but that's a bit of a wild card as well.

Because he is the only high cap we have that has any value, and we have 4 top 6 lhd and one rhd.

It was quite obvious in McDavid's end of season that he wants to see a team that can compete for the cup for the next 3+ years. Does 35yo Ekholm show him that? Especially when he looked so bad in the finals? I don't think so. Would anyone really be shocked to see a 35yo Ekholm have a bad season next year, due to accumulated injuries and age? I wouldn't, I almost expect it tbh.

Nurse is immovable until his nmc opens up in 2027. Your best bet is to try and increase his value until then, and you don't accomplish that by giving Ekholm all the gravy McDraiBouch minutes, or press boxing Darnell to piss him off in hopes he waives his nmc.

Bob Stauffer says there is lots of going on and there have been lots of conversations between the Oilers. The management is going with a different approach with Stan Bowman.

Bob Stauffer also stated that, mark his words, Oilers will have much more cap space before July 1st
Nurse, Arvidsson, Henrique, and Kane trade when? 😂

Ekholm is the best LD that we have. If you're moving anyone for a RD upgrade it is Kulak. Give him the proper time to heal up and he will be fine and really good for the next couple of years. If he has a rough season next year you can trade him or walk from his contract in the summer.

Not trying to be a prick here (well at least not more than normally!) but can anyone else corroborate this since Tony sometimes misquotes/mishears things?

All that I know is that the time for talk is over. These dumb bastards didn't upgrade the goaltending when it was badly needed and they absolutely struck out with Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner.

Circling back to the goalie front, how many teams are realistically looking for a goalie.

Columbus
Detroit
Edmonton
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
San Jose

Is that the list?

i dont see Pittsburgh or San Jose willing to give up significant assets to get a goalie like Demko or Gibson. San Jose IMO will either spend their money on a UFA like Allen or take a goalie dump like they did previously with Blackwood. Pittsburgh might just be stuck with Jarry or try and flip him for another dump like Merzlikins.

I do think Philadelphia makes a swing for one of those 2 guys as they have a lot of assets to give up. So Demko or Gibson is probably their starter.

So that leaves us bidding against Detroit (who already has Talbot and Mrazek that they need to dump) and Columbus (needs to dump Merzlikins).

I dont get who we are really bidding against that would constitute a 1st round pick.

I'm not lying man. I know I've sometimes added on more. But I'm not lying.

Prick.

Kulak looked fine beside Bouchard and makes 2.75. Ekholm gets gravy deployment compared to Nurse. Walman is in a contract year, under 30, and looked really good here for the most part.

Ekholm is heavily propped up by his deployment.

I guess it's just opinion at this point, but I would bank on us never seeing Ekholm of 23-24 again, and next summer we just let him walk. He wasn't good this year, and he was brutal in the playoffs. I have no interest in waiting to see if that turns around at 35 years old, especially if we can get value back right now and need the space.

Kulak is far too inconsistent to be counted on as a #2 defenseman on this team. If I'd pair someone other than Ek with Bouch it would be Walman.

I understand that. I'm more of a spread the wealth kinda guy, and I think Kulaks skating compliments Bouchard well. Like in my mind, we ditch Ekholm and sign 27yo Fabbro, run something like

Kulak-Bouchard
Walman-Fabbro
Nurse-Stecher/Emberson

But really, you could move any of the LHD around and it probably works. I just think Walman and Bouchard can both carry a pairing.

Kulak on the first pairing... wtf disaster time, and McDavid will not extend.
