Which Bottom 6 Forwards Do You Keep?

Normally I'd agree, but we're talking about a guy heading into his 40s with a long streak of extended seasons. If he's welcoming a $1m AAV, all the power to him. But he's probably asking for an incentive-laden deal based on his previous season.

Let's be realistic. Perry's not getting any faster. And if you're an Oiler fan, you'd hope that they have better options to play the gravy minutes. Perry doesn't fare overly well as s fourth line option.

I wouldn't call bottom 6 "gravy minutes". And he provides quite a bit for what his contract typically has been for us.

Not saying we shouldn't seek upgrades where possible, but Corey Perrys role is far from the top 5 in priorities imo. Especially in a world with our cap situation and lack of assets.

We don't need him to be a burner. We need defensively reliable, gritty, hard-nosed guys that have a scoring touch.

If Corey Perry had a business card, guaranteed that's what it would have on it.

Seravelli mentioned Michael Hrabal won't sign with Utah, choosing another year at UMass, and they may look to move his rights. We have a wide open goalie pipeline, so maybe he'd sign with us?

38OA in 2023, 6'7, .924sv% this year and .912 last in the NCAA.

Like I said earlier I think it's moreso our PK system than it is our personnel.
That PK was near perfect last year, we gave up nothing and produced short handed goals. The oilers PK system needs two fast forwards who read each other to work. Jackson traded two young fast PKers, and then whatever was left hit early-mid thirties legs. It's definitely a personnel issue, but it's so bad, a system change might be easier.

But who? There’s no one else out there who is both better AND attainable:

Blackwood- No
Oettinger- No
Vasilevskiy- lol no
Binnington- Possibly but probably not
Montembault- Nope
Thompson/Lindgren- Nada
Hill- Nah
Ullmark- Not after that contract they just gave him
Swayman- See above
Vejmelka- Ditto
Demko- Huge risk and doubt they move him in-division
Shesterkin- No lmao
Saros- Trotz is delulu so not available
Markstrom- Not available as no other internal options
Kuemper- See above
Merzlikins- See above
Gustavsson- No, will have to wait for UFA next summer
Daccord- Nope
UPL- Maybe available but not until Levi takes the crease from him
Hellebuyck- lololol
Wolf- Yeah not happening
Woll/Stolarz- Nope
Andersen- CAR just signed him so no
Fedotov/Ersson- Not an upgrade
Mrazek/Talbot- Not an upgrade
Jarry- Lol not an upgrade
Knight- Their future in goal so no
Askarov- See above

That means John Gibson is literally it. If it costs O’Reilly, it costs O’Reilly.
This is insanity. You don't trade your best prospect for a disgruntled average at best goalie who wants out.

There's your younger 6'3" right-shot centerman

yeah.. Fancy stats are nice but for me you start with out put

93pts in 252 games. Last year 65 games 6 goals 16assist 22 pts, previous year 41 games 6 goals, 7 assists 13 pts. He had one fair season 22/23 72 games, 14g-21a-35pts. He is also not that physical of guy in any shape or form. 6-3 is a good size but plays like he 5-10.

Just remember how good Ullmark was in the 3 years prior to getting traded. His value was much higher than Gibson. Plus, Anaheim is desperate to trade him for cap space
Which is why giving up a first and giving up one of the few higher end prospects the Oilers have left is borderline ridiculous for an older, injury prone Gibson even if they are retaining. Especially if Gibson is saying Edmonton is one of the few teams he’ll waive for lowers the return more.

As I said a few days ago, goalies are incredibly overvalued by fans and usually go for much less. Before just settling on Gibson, I’d be calling practically every team in the league seeing what it’d take to get a conversation started about their goalie.

I think we see one of Podz or Fredric in the top six with RNH and Hyman. Rico and Jamark are bottom six lock so technically we need a 4C and 2 bottom six RWs. Kane and Arvidsson pretty much guaranteed to be gone to make room for Draisaitl and Bouchards extensions plus to fill the extra holes.

Bowman said there will be changes at forward but if he’s looking at bringing back Perry, Fredric and Brown then I don’t see what space we have for anyone else.

They don't need to move Kane and Arvidsson to make room for the extensions but they need to move at least one of them to make any addition of significance which will likely be Frederic lol. I'm loling on the outside but crying on the inside.

On this morning's 32 Thoughts Podcast:
  • Edmonton and Arvidsson working together to find a landing spot. Nobody is knifing each other on the way out. It didn't work out, it's time to move on.

  • Touched on goaltending, how Jake Allen is the best on the UFA market, so that would lead us to exploring trade options. Talked about going to our top players and asking what they think about such and such as an option.

  • "I also do think there's a decent chance Kapanen stays" - Friedman

Maybe our top players need to worry about just being top players and stop pretending to be GM’s.

Does McDavid need to be consulted on who the scouts are, who drives the team bus and flies the charter plane as well? You’d think it’d be exhausting always having management coming to you on every goddam personnel move this team thinks of making.

“Jeff, Anaheim wants to trade us Gibson at 50% retained for 2027 1st”

“Let me call Connor”

I keep my views out when posting tidbits, attempting not to play telephone, but that was cringe.

I think half of it is management underlining the lack of good options out there.

You wonder why they don't just make Mc-D the GM. He could do it in his spare time and just delegate most of it to an office manager. Probably would work out the same (or better) than with Stan in control.

I would love to upgrade on Picks no question, but if the difference is $1M between he and an appreciably better backup I would rather use that money to improve on our top nine. Gibson will get the lion’s share of starts anyway.
Thanks for telling me i should never consider anything you say seriously.

Didnt work out? The oilers failed him lmfao he had hyman level 5v5 points per 60 lmfao carrying himself! He shoulda had a spot with mcdrai all season long all playoffs long lmfao it was like krissy KNOB-LOCK just hated him. Just decided "the gm wanted you, but i dont like you"

haha welcome to the way the world works, where the nobility and friends take jobs that scores of others could do better.

Regarding Kapanen I think he had some great moments but I don’t see him as an everyday NHL player and more of a 13th forward. Anytime he’s had an extended run he gets worse over time. Only when reinjected into the lineup does he play the way he needs to play to be effective.

I don't know it seems like our general managers over the years can use all the help they can get. No fan was handing out a contract of 9.25 to Nurse or running it back again with Skinner/Pickard etc etc

I'd love to see Savoie full time next year and hopefully O'Reilly cracks the roster. Having some youth in the bottom 6 would do tremendously for secondary scoring. Both rookies centered by a vet? O'Reilly - RNH - Savoie

Alternatively plug a rookie McDavid or drai to put under their wings
SOR is not ready. Him AND Savoie is a bad idea on a roster looking to compete for a cup.

Youth on the team? Broberg and Holloway say hi
