I’m just waiting for Bowman to sign some veteran backup to “help out” Skinner and then have sub 900 goaltending all year again.

Maybe I’m being pessimistic.

There have been a lot, and I mean a lot of frustrating and stupid narratives from the media and the team over the past 20 years. Characterizing the goalie we need to get as one that needs to "push" Skinner is possibly the dumbest. Delusional to the degree of Schultz being a future Norris winner.

Counter, he's basically screaming at Hofer they won't pay him.
This is how you manage against your obvious vulnerabilities: "We’ve taken the Boston-Detroit approach last year when they had RFAs. They made sure they left enough cap space that any offer could be matched."

Stay in control with your assets and pro-actively plug vulnerabilities. Bluff or not with prospective poachers.

So words solve this issue? Wouldn't signing him be being proactive. He was basically just loud about what the Oilers were quiet about.

The Oilers f***ed up, but he hasn't actually done anything.

No, it didn't, this is a misunderstanding that needs to stop. Ekblad was suspended after the trade deadline. Trade deadline was March 7, and Ekblad was suspended March 10.

It didn’t. The suspension was AFTER the deadline.

I guess I'll take your word for it, its hard to go back and looking and see what cap space was available in terms of accrual. They must have had Tkachuk on LTIR to bring in both Jones, Marchand, Sturm and Vanecek.

Either way, Ekblad shouldn't have been eligible for playoffs and the optics look horrible.

They did.
Trade deadline was March 7th, Ekblad was suspended on March 10th, Tkachuk got put on LtIR March 4th.

You apparently missed the part about keeping the cap space open that affords flexibility. Followed by words.

That's still dumb to say. "I'll only not match if it's a 1st."

Daring a team that values him to test that at $4M AAV, which you know they don't want to pay him whether they have the room or not. Also creates a large qualifier next year when they have several bigger deals to do.

Keeping enough money to match offer sheets is smart business. Telling teams to try an offer sheet isn’t…

How is that statement bold or smart? It just says hey teams might as well inflate the price because we are matching anyways.
Lots of people and media trying to prime an Oilers retribution RFA signing. Oil don't have the asset required and have to spend more to get their 2nd back. Then inflate an offer just below 1st round compensation hoping to get an still unproven goaltender for a Cup Finalist team looking to get back for a third time to win or overspend assets they don't have on an emotional play at revenge. Bad management all around if the Oilers go down that path ... which I fully expect they won't.

Other non-window team take a run at a prospective goalie upgrade. Maybe. But no one's pushing beyond a 2rd round compensation for a largely unproven goaltender within the most challenging position to project in different team structure and personnel.
