Yeah reading some of the stuff in praise of Hanafin is pretty crazy. I mean, I shit on the guy all of the time, maybe he looks worse against us (though he’s had a goal or two playing us of course) but nothing screams high end defender to me. Maybe it’s when he plays other teams?? Not any games that I’ve seen. Tanev is easily their best D and that’s scary all things considered.

This is their D depth chart (with where I think the player should slot on a good team)

Hanafin (4) - Tanev (3)
Zadorov (5) - Andersson (4)
Valimaki (6) - Welinski (10)
Kyllington (7) - Mackey (10)

Checked the non roster to see if they had any “stud D” coming up and none of those names jump out (though I’m sure their fanbase will hype the shit out of them as “next ones”)

They basically have a 2nd pair for their top pair, a 2/3 tweener and a 3rd pair.

If Tanev or Hanafin go down they’re toast
Pretty much looks like us but Nurse is a 1

Nurse (1) - Barrie (3)
Keith(5) - Ceci (5)
Russell(7) - Bouchard(6)
Koekkoek(8) - Lagesson (9)

According to Flames fans on the mains everything will come together when Eichel goes to Calgary. Then they're legit contenders.
Buffalo unfortunately being one of the few teams with management bad enough to bail Calgary out.

I think it's a little strange how some of them say they should rebuild, but if they get Eichel then they go from rebuild to legit cup contenders.

Do I just not know anything about Jack Eichel?

I don’t think they’d be cup contenders but Eichel would be a significant upgrade on Monahan.

Oh definitely. I'm not sure what sort of package they'd put together though considering none of their roster players seem to be mentioned in a trade. I'd think Tkachuk would go but maybe I'm wrong.

My nightmare is Adams making another bad trade where the Flames only give up 2 good assets. Something like Monahan, Dube, Kylington, Zary for Eichel.

I wonder if they realize that Eichel probably won't play this year (at least not until they could be well dead and gone in a play off hunt) and they actually have to give up assets to get him

The wild card will be if Keith and / or Ceci can be solid 2nd pair guys. I think they can, but remains to be seen. The only Flames D outside of Tanev and (maybe) Hanafin that are guaranteed better than those two is maybe Rasmus Nobodysson but he'll have to bounce back hard from a pretty garbage season last season as well.

Bouchard could end up being better than any D on either team that isn't Nurse or Tanev by mid season. Of course, some of the Flames D could be better but the only ones that I think might have more to show are Hanafin and Valimaki. Valimaki looked lost last season on the 3rd pair, Hanafin was mediocre, and Rasmus won't be any better than he has been at his peak (which is a 4/5 IMO)

That wouldn't be the worst thing ever. They replace a top 6 C with a guy who could be elite but could also be damaged goods the rest of his career. They also lose a solid top 9F (Dube), decent top 9F prospect that could have top 6 upside in Zary), and a bottom pair guy in Kyllington (that could be top 4 but I'm not OKG so I don't believe that).

Eichel won't start the season at this point, and if they have another rough season the odds are they lose Tkachuk and Gaudreau anyhow. Then it's full on rebuild time, sorry Eichel, you can't escape your fate.

Yeah that's another thing they don't mention is the fact that he needs neck surgery and training camp is in what, 4 weeks?

Nah I'm saying that it's not a series of steps. They need to take a significant leap forward now.

I get what your saying but disagree it’s that big a leap. They were 11th. I think they will be 6-8th. Year after maybe they are top 3-5. That’s incremental progress to me anyway.

It’s just not great if the Flames manage to acquire an elite player for basically nothing.

I don’t think that’s nothing, plus there is risk involved regarding the player. If Eichel was healthy and asked for a trade it would be those guys plus Tkachuk, picks etc

No way Dube goes according to some of them, lol.
I hate to sound like I'm bagging on all their fans or their team cause I'm not and I acknowledge as an Oilers fan I really have no place. But some of them really do a good job of riling me up by doing nothing but piling on everything Oilers related and being totally delusional about their own team. I seem to notice it more with Flames fans than anyone else.

Damn you, internet.

Nothing in relation to what they’re potentially getting back I mean. And realistically if Eichel can’t play they’d just LTIR him and take the cap savings from dumping Monahan as a blessing, lol.

Flames fans little brother syndrome will never go away, which is why it’s ABC. I think I’ve met one or two Flames fans that weren't constantly shitting on this team (and it was likely just a public facade).

Leafs fans and the Leaf blower media are annoying but there are fans that have been gracious (look at them wishing the best for Hyman here and wanting him to win a championship with us as a recent example, Flames fans would kick him out the door almost unanimously if he went from the Flames to Oilers).

Canucks have an obnoxious bandwagon contingent that rears a delusional head every time they look like they might turn the corner (ever since dominating online presence with the Sedin era), but they have reasonable fans (more so than the Flames).

Jets and Habs fans can be annoying but meh, Sens are whatever (and we have some posters here where the Oilers are their second team).

Simply put, the Flames, their fan base and fart sniffing media are our primal enemies, from now and until the end of time.

I've seen several Flames fans on twitter "dunking" on the Neal-Lucic trade, even as recently as days ago.

It's so adorably pathetic that I wouldn't even know what to say if I bothered responding. Grasping at straws to feel good about themselves.

Not even close to Cup contenders but it’s a step in the right direction. You have to factor in what’s going the other way to acquire Eichel which could hurt their depth and prospect pool. They still have one of the worst D cores in the league which Eichel won’t help. They’ll just end up being Buffalo with Markstrom in net and no elite prospects.
