In fairness he has MAC and others to re-sign too, they have stars already to sign.
But 5.5 and then 6.3 offers aren't even close to what he's worth. Both he and McKinnon have been grossly underpaid for years now. The Avalanche have benefitted greatly from this and this is his reward...nah Sakic doesn't want to burn this bridge.

The only prospect we've brought up to "fix our depth" has been McLeod. Our bottom 6 has been bargain bin "pros" as Ken Holland says.

I'm all for eating crow if we give someone a chance to step up and they don't, but we really haven't given anyone a chance have we?

We give guys a chance in camp every year, but nobody claims a role. Benson has done nothing the last couple years, Pulju was only finally good last year, Currie never made the next step, etc

I like the way Sakic is thinking, first you give Rantanen 9.25mil, then Makar 9 mil and after that you start to low ball your team captain who's more important to team than Rantanen and isn't too much shy offensively.

Agreed about the bottom 6.

I wouldn't say Savard is much of a downgrade from Larsson, but yes a downgrade. Barrie is not a net positive defensive player on D. He's a PP specialist and a transition expert. He struggles in his own zone and often gets beat on the half wall.

He was the best first passer on the team. Bear was ok in his first year. He was worse at it last year. If Barrie is gone, then Drai, McD will have to chase the puck more.

Barrie was an overall net positive by any real metric.

Even if there was an actual reason to think Evan Bouchard is better - and there isn't, he's been subpar defensively at every level of his career - there's no reason to think he can adequately replace a guy who good results in the top-pair while leading the goddamn league in scoring.

McDavid's on-ice results were better away from Barrie than with him. Barrie away from McDavid was a disaster.

Ya'll are on this "play with McDavid" thing. Lots of defenseman have played with McDavid. Nobody else has had those results.

Just more Oilers fans badly overrating role players and badly underrating skill and production.

Who cares? Seriously, why should I care if he can put up points if those points don't actually translate to wins because the rest of the roster is shit?

It's not about Bouchard replicating that level of production, it's about allocating scare resources (cap and roster space) to areas where they'll have the greatest impact and as long as Bouchard or Bear doesn't absolutely tank the performance of the top unit (which seems unlikely), you're better off spending money elsewhere instead of paying a premium for a handful of extra points for a line that is already perfectly capable of outscoring the other team.

Well, if Suter did come here he’d definitely be an upgrade on whatever tf we iced last year. I have time for him even though I still think his stats were pumped up quite a bit due to Kane/Cat.

Camp is a lot different than a game situation. I mean, coaches are gonna be more willing to send down a guy on a ELC since the team doesn't have to send him through waivers.

Plus, the current management has been all about acquiring "pros" to fill out the bottom 6 because their impression was that the players in the system aren't ready. I personally think they haven't been given much of an opportunity under this regime at all. However, considering their eye-popping stats at the AHL level last year they're gonna get a shot this year. We'll see if they can step up or not.

Realistically Sakic has 2 years until Mackinnon is up. His best chance to win is with Landeskog, so I don't know he has much of a choice.

I think you do what you can to keep Landeskog and see what happens the next two off-season's. Kadri and Burakvosky are up after this year. Johnson is up in 2 years as well.

Losing Landeskog will be a pretty massive hole to fill

Exactly this, 5 million on barrie can be used to better the team in better ways IMO, also bouchard needs to be given the reins at some point, he will immediately be better defensively then barrie.

With the amount of trashing Keith here by analytics, ppl really need to realize just how bad Barrie is gonna look when he inevitably has to share offensive minutes w Bouchard.

His TO numbers should be mighty scary to those citing only his offensive #s last year

To a point kinda.

Camp is definitely different than game time. In camp vets are at half speed trying to just not get hurt, prospects are supposed to be pushing hard for a spot. If you can't look better than a half speed vet in camp then you aren't the best option. Waivers will give Benson and co a longer look in camp but they have to outplay someone

Bear is also 24 and played his second NHL season last year. Let's see how he plays next year.

As for Barrie, yeah McDavid and Draisaitl might have to chase a bit more, but then again players grow. Nurse did a job at transition last year and as much as I crap on Keith he still has his hockey IQ and should be able to move the puck at least.

Sakic saw RNH take a massive discount and immediately thinks it applies to his captain who went 2nd overall to RNH lol

Hopefully our fanbase is better to Nuge now that it’s becoming clear just how much of a discount he took.

Ya, those deals aren’t necessarily overpays, but you can’t now ask Landeskog/McKinnon to take discounts either.
