Rule clarification during a penalty

So, not sure if I should post this on the Rangers board but I thought of an interesting topic because it could happen to any team. This game Fox took a penalty but got hurt and another player (Othmann) went to the box. Two questions, if Fox came back before the two minutes were up, I assume he's not switching with Othmann because logistically that's just complicated. But the second question is the more interesting one, if he's not switching with Othmann can he go kick in and kill the penalty? Technically someone else is serving the penalty but part of the punishment should be that you can't kill a penalty.

The penalized player must replace the player in the box during the 1st stoppage they're back at the bench. If the player steps on the ice, they'll receive a 2 min penalty.

Neither are possible. If another player serves a penalty for a player for the reason that he cannot serve the penalty himself due to injury, they can neither swap mid-penalty nor can the original player take the ice until the penalty has expired.

My guess is the sensible rule would be that he's off until the penalty has ended, but I don't feel like googling it right now, as logic and the NHL don't combine.

Granted I gave the USA Hockey answer. It must be different in the NHL.

Neither are possible. If another player serves a penalty for a player for the reason that he cannot serve the penalty himself due to injury, they can neither swap mid-penalty nor can the original player take the ice until the penalty has expired.

Thanks, this was what I assumed. Because then good penalth killers could fake injuries and get non-penalty killers in the box.

If Fox steps back on the ice with Othmann still in the box in his place, the Rangers have to kill the penalty with no goalie and the Islanders still wouldn't score.

NHL rule 8.1

"If the injured player receives a minor penalty, the penalized team shall immediately put a substitute player on the penalty bench, who shall serve the penalty until such time as the injured player is able to return to the game. He would replace his teammate on the penalty bench at the next stoppage of play."

I did some further digging and found rule 68.1 regarding this. It says nothing about an injured player taking the place of his teammate serving his penalty for him, just that his team will be charged with a minor penalty if he gets on the ice before his penalty expires. This seems to imply that they wouldn’t switch.

I don't know if I've seen it for a minor penalty because getting back to the bench in 2m of playing time would be pretty difficult since in reality that is like 5m in real time, maybe. But I have definitely seen this after fights where a player serves until the player needing repairs comes back from the room.
