I'd bet on Cates making it, he just has an aura around him, nothing stands out then you realize he's doing every well.
Given his smarts and work ethic, I expect him to continue improving over the next few years, he's not a bad skater and should fill out that frame.

Should be a 4th liner one day, whether it's here or somewhere else.

I always admired teams with fourth lines that can skate and play hockey without being 30 year old career AHL fodder

I don’t have much else to add to this conversation but I’ll make sure this is on each page...

Amazing how the stats remain the same, but the player and team look better when the player is slotted appropriately.

Feels like he has been better. He’s a good hockey player - same category as Poehling.

A 4th line of Cates Poehling and Hathaway would be unbelievable - and Cates / Poehling easily can move up to the 3rd line in a pinch.

I don’t know what Cates is looking for on his next deal, but I do wish they would have went a bit longer

I think most people are forgetting that Cates was injured for a big chunk of the season, and still hasn't really got back into his groove on the ice. There have been flashes of his defensive ability recently though, so here's to hoping that he's finally getting 100% healthy. He's going to be a really valuable peice over the next 4-5 years.

For every Tippet, we need a Cates.

He is a very good defensive forward and play-driver... hopefully he can stick at C as if he does he has more value both to the team and league wide.

He is having a better year than the raw numbers suggest.
