Looking back at the 2023 series all the scores were pretty close. 4/5 were one goal games (the other was a 4-2 Florida win,) and two were overtime. Now obviously the series wasn't close as Florida won in 5, but I wonder if a big reason for Berube's system and the grinding out leads is/was in preparation of an eventual Florida series.

If they can win the 3-2 and 2-1 games they can win the series. Stolarz needs to be a bit better and stop with the 3rd period goals against. McMann needs to wake up and be a force on the second line. The third line needs to do what they did on the Patches goal.

Florida didn't become a powerhouse until 2023 when they knocked out Boston after that crazy season and then rolled over Toronto and Carolina. Prior to that in 2022 they won the presidents trophy and then got swept by Tampa in round 2. Toronto needs to stop being the team that loses to the team going to the finals. It's their turn to go to the finals and rewrite the book.

Florida lost to Tampa twice in a row before owning then the past two season. I don't care if it's ugly or how good/scary Florida. Leafs need to rise to the occasion and claim the division for real. Then the conference. Then the cup.
Right games at this level in the playoffs are decided on the margins. Leafs showed great signs in 5 of 6 games not showing panic. They were winning or tied for many of those minutes. Laid an egg in game 5. We also had Florida laying an egg in game 3 against TB. Yes teams gain more trust because of prior success but that has very little to do with the present. Eg. If Dallas wins tonight the Avs will have won 1 playoff series since they won the Cup.

Gotta keep the Panthers out of the slot as much as possible. Did a great job of keeping Ottawa out of the crease for the most part. That’s the big difference this year a big six man unit that will mix it up with any one. Panthers are way meaner and experienced than the Sens but I don’t expect the Leaf D to fold to them. Leaf goaltending much better and settled than any time recently. Looking forward to this series should be very close and a real battle.

Hard disagree.

He's been a top 3 defensive dman in the league over the last half decade and the lynchpin in Berubes system. When he was out for a while late in the season, it was a firedrill without him in the defensive zone as hes just not replaceable with what he does with his minutes IMO. One of the key players for the next series for sure.
That poster is only shitting on Tanev because Tanev was not a Dubas acquisition.

I’m not sure if anyone watched the Tampa Florida series, but Florida was intentionally trying to hurt their guys. Forearms and fists to head while IN MOTION.. thank legal Tie Domi on Scott Nieadermier.

If there is a fanbase that desperately needs to be put back in its place, its Panthers fans. All 15 of them.

You mean all 6 of them now that most Canadians are moving back

I don't know what people are really afraid of the Panthers. Even few years ago, we had lot of good chances against them. Brobo was the difference
Our goalies weren't. We have good goaltending, some serious size at the back

Except for one game, we lost all games by 1 goal. Two on OT. We were right there with them

That series didn't have Benoit, Tanev and Carlo. Knies got injured. Not to mention Stolarz
This current team is built to play teams like Panthers.

I really don't see us winning this series in less than 7 games but I think that's exactly what will happen.

We're long overdue to come out on top in a Game 7.
I said Leafs in 6 the first round... so I hope Leafs in 7 now is right. That's my call for this series.

You know Florida is going to be a dirty team and get away with a bunch of bullshit. Hopefully Leafs can do the same and get away with it.

8pm start stings a bit...
I'd rather 7pm starts but is what it is

If we keep taking 3-4 of their players every summer eventually we would become them. If you can’t beat them steal their players 😂

I’ll echo a previous poster. “We can’t be chasing the series and the games” you damn right!! We gotta start scoring first in games on a more consistent basis, it’s so much more easy to play when you’re not constantly chasing goals. You get to stay in your systems and stay in the flow of the game. If we’re constantly going down 1-0, 2-0 we got no chance honestly. We gotta come out on Monday like bees who just had an intruder enter their hive

Can we really expect that to happen though ? They are who they are and Florida is going to target them and take away their time and space. History would tell us they won’t push back and will get pushed out of the series offensively. But that’s okay. The way the Leafs can beat Florida is to play lock down defense and get opportunistic scoring throughout the lineup. The biggest goals in the Ottawa series came from Domi, Benoit and Patches. That should give them confidence not to just rely on and overplay their top six. Roll four lines. Play hard physical hockey especially in their own end, win the special teams battle and get great goaltending. Do this and they can beat a great Panthers team.
This ^ it’s sad that I’ve already accepted that Matthews and Marner are going to put up a bunch of 0’s. I’m just praying we get a guy like McMann to finally arrive in the playoffs. He was invisible for the most part in round 1.

Domi/McMann/Laughton etc are going to have to come up big. If Rielly can put up some numbers that would help also

Switch Marner and Nylander. Matthews who’s no longer as big a scoring threat can feed Nylander and Knies who are and Marner can feed Tavares and McMann.
Agree with this generally and I believe the numbers bear it out. Mathews and Nylander can both shoot and pass, but Mathews scores most often when the goalie is moving, not squared with the shot. When Nylander has the puck the goalie has to respect him, which is not as much the case with Marner. The same is true when Mathews has the puck. They make each more dangerous.

Two other things. 1. For the love of God I hope the refs call a fair series, Florida gets away with a ton of dirty stuff. Refs gotta make the calls. 2. Berube can’t stick to the Matthews-Marner all series until it’s too late. If they aren’t producing you gotta have the balls to switch the lines up. Keefe was f***ing horrendous at in game adjustments and I personally feel it cost is so many games in the past. He just stuck with those 2 all the time even if it wasn’t working
