Prospect Info: Round 1, Pick 13: Jett Luchanko, C, Guelph (OHL) - 7/6 Upd: Signed 3yr ELC

A whole lot of talk about not-Jett Luchanko in a thread that explicitly titled ‘Jett Luchanko’

Poor guy is gonna see his first thread turfed because we have to have another ‘Chuck Fletcher got f***ed by Covid’

Time to resurrect our top prospect thread...

Luchanko is not exactly doing anything in the AHL so far which would indicate he is NHL ready.

48% CF%
49% xGF%

in his games so far. Basically all his linemates (Lyksell, Gendron, Widsom, Wilson) have been better away from him than with him.

10 of LHVs 16 fwds over the last 10 games are at over 50%.

No fwd has had less Shots/60 at 5v5 (2.0 for Luchanko).

Honestly were I GM I would try and loan him to Europe next year, no-one ever does that but they should not rush him to the NHL. I know the CHL-NHL agreement is prohibitive though... signing him to his ELC right away also means cant go to NCAA.

Someone on here called him Laughtchanko and i loved it!

Another bad pick. In my eyes he would be a solid 3rd round pick. Nothing more!

That's unfair. He's still a 1st round talent, just back 1/3rd of the first, and you certainly don't take him with clearly better players on the board.

They would never do that. He’s an NHL player next season sadly.

The optics, and PR would be too problematic if he wasn’t - and the Comcast Flyers care about perception than performance.

You would have people questioning the pick more if he didn’t make the team next year, and they can’t have that.

I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves here. This is seven AHL games in his D+1 year. Not suggesting he is a world-beater or that this was a good pick or that he'll be an NHL regular next year or anything like that, but Luchanko was always going to be a 1st round pick (just not as high as he was). The report on him was always he was a middle six guy at best with a high floor and low ceiling as far as I can tell and that hasn't changed. The comparisons to Laughton seem to be accurate so the guy the are getting is the guy the picked, he just shouldn't have been picked there it would seem.

I ain't reading all that. Jett is a fittingly bad name for a bad player

The problem is that they passed over a difference maker with a much higher ceiling at what I would consider a premium position, for a lower ceiling, "safe" player. He will make the NHL, but where he was picked if he becomes Laughton or Cates or Poehling it equals bust. Maybe some of us are calling it early but he isn't doing anything to help that pending bust label.

No 100%, I am not defending the pick, I just think saying things like he would never don an NHL sweater on another team is a little much. He was picked too high and his ceiling is at best a middle sixer. No argument there. But the scouting report/expectations haven't changed. It isn't like the pick looks worse now than it did at the time from a perspective of his outlook. The pick may look worse because of how others have fared but he seems to be playing at the level that he was expecting to play at, which is not that of a top 15 pick, more like a back end of the first "safe" pick. Still not a good pick, but the hyperbole of this guy being that would never play on a non-Flyers team is silly. Perhaps he wouldn't have been picked that high by any other team, that's fine, but he's still a legit NHL prospect.

I think he will have a very nice bottom 6 NHL career, might be like Laughton and stay in one place for a while. He will forever be linked to Buium and his draft position, couple that with the patience that us Flyers fans have and he has an uphill climb -- that isn't really his fault due to the FO incompetence and then insulting our intelligence saying we already have 2 similar to Buium.

It's ok we have enough high end talent to swing for safe players.

Oh wait ...

Hopefully he doesn't get rushed because the team is desperate to have him justify his draft position
Jett should really go back to Jr for one more year. It would be the right thing for his development. He's far from 'too good for the OHL' and it would give him a chance to play in the WJC as a returning player. Let him learn how to create offense.

Just your daily reminder that the Flyers literally admitted that they reached for a center because "we really needed one in the system" instead of BPA.

It makes me mad every time I think of this.

And by doing so, didn't even address the need for center.

Never mind we also have a need for dmen
