Round 1 - heroes and zeroes

To me the biggest heros in round 1 were Benoit and Domi.

Sure there guy with more points, at least 5 of them.

and at least 7 players had as many points.

But both Benoit and Domi factored in on 2 game winning goals.

Domi scored the winner in game 2 and set up the winner in game 6.

Benoit set up the winner in game 2 and scored the winner in game 3.

Those 2 were absolutely clutch.

The biggest zero?

Bobby McMann, he did nothing in round 1, complete non factor.

The man is a 20+ goal scorer, he needs to show up and bag a couple next round.

He needs to be a positive factor.

Will , Mitch, Chris, JT, Knies all took a lot more ice than they gave, no steps back. No way you could ask more from them, but it's the Cats this time around and the team needs more from these guys.

MaxD, Simon, Anthony, Auston, Jake, Pontus, Ollie, Maxi P, all +1. They all had some real stand out moments and they all contributed to wins.

Morgan, Bobby, Steve, Brandon, Scott, Jarnkrok all were even I'd say, none of them caused any of losses nor made any of the wins happen.

They just won a playoff series in 1 less game than they had to do it in. That in itself is an accomplishment that only one other team of this era can claim, and that other team just scraped by. I can't really say there was anybody who should never play another game or created a situation that led to the teams' downfall. There are some players on this version of the team that have a lot more to give, there are also guys who cannot slip in the least and to avoid the golf course will have to up their games.

It's all in the rear view now, no use staring at as we have to move forward, lots of road up ahead and all kinds of traffic.

GLG

Laughton took his 4th line assignment, and decided to turn his unit into the 3rd line. He was quality on every shift in every aspect. Face off, pressure, positioning, hustle, cycle, forecheck, backcheck, finishing checks, blocking shots. He proved his worth.

The only let down was McMann, and I'm willing to bet he'll come through at some point. Him and Domi, theoretically, should be able to do some damage.

There’s no logical argument to have Matthews separated from the other core 4 guys

Except we all know he's so much better than he showed, his 9.5% shooting % so far this playoff is well below his career numbers. The stat that most concerns me is accuracy, how often is he missing his shot? So many high wide right. If you don't shoot you sure can't score, if you can't get them on net you'll never score. The other reason he's rated low is his overall mobility, he's off on his top speed and his acceleration isn't allowing him to create separation. We know he has all those factors, but until we see them he might as well be just another good player who's grossly over paid

I've been saying all year that McMann could have been a difference maker against the Bruins last year. Seeing him in the 1st round, I have to say I was mistaken. He was pretty good in the clincher though so maybe he'll turn it on against the panthers?

Other standouts were Benoit, OEL, Laughton and Tavares.

Laughton was so horrible when he started out here, but he indeed was a useful player this series.

Some guys are built for playoffs and that entire 4th Line is just clicking, I wasn't too worried early on as I knew it was going to take some time to get going. If he were moved in the offseason it might be different, he was thrown into the fire in hockey mad Toronto during a division hunt mid season.

I think I read somewhere that their line had the second highest expected goals in the series against Ottawa, Matthews line was first in the series.

That is an excellent stat if accurate.

I know most of our fans focus on goals or assists etc etc

I thought Matthews aside from game 5 was awesome.

Liked Tanev, Benoit, Knies, Laughton and Lorentz. Stolarz was also good.

Funny think about expected goals they aren’t actual goals we need actual goals especially against these guys so here’s to that 👏🏽

Might as well say you liked the video whole team

There were heroes who were not consistent like Domi with OT winner and nice assist on Series winning goal.

There were zeroes at bad times, like Knies bad clear, Nylander out of gas, Stolarz poke check attempt gone bad. But nobody cost us a series or game. Rielly looks really tired.

Laughton didn’t score but that shot block I’ll remember for a long time.

Pacioretty took a few games to get up to speed, I think he’s scored a crazy amount of series clinching goals in the past. Hopefully it’s just the start of an epic playoff for him. I like him with Tavares and Nylander, but Berube platooned him and McMann and he did well on either line.

A+.
Tanev McCabe Benoit, Berube

A-
Matthews, Marner, Laughton Line, Holmberg
