It was a chippy game that featured some solid hitting and a good amount of after the whistle activity and get-togethers that the refs had to break up. The younger USNTDP players didn't back down or shy away from their older opponents so credit to them for that.

More likely on PP than OT but time will tell when he is ready. It may take GP a bit to get adjusted to the NHL games. Kreider spent some time in the AHL. So did McD. So did Zooks. I believe they were older than GP.

I know it's fashionable to criticize the organization because some younger players haven't gotten the ice time that we feel they should have, but plenty of young players have worked themselves into more important roles. Granted, it's mostly on defense, and mostly out of necessity, but that's just the reality of having a top-loaded, veteran offense.

Gabe will likely need to prove himself before he's put out there in OT. We've played 1 OT game so far and the only forwards who got a shift in OT were Zib, Panarin, Kreider, Trocheck, Laf and Chytil. It was the same group the year before until Chytil got hurt, and then Wennberg was added to the mix after he was acquired.

Which forwards would you play in OT instead of one of those 6? Reilly Smith is a seasoned vet, but he didn't get a shift in OT. None of the others are close to being better options. There are only so many shifts to be played in 5 minutes, and half of those forward spots are going to go to centers.

Gabe will get what he earns. He may come in and take a top 6 spot right off the bat. He'll definitely be given the chance, as his only significant competition is likely to be Othmann and Berard. Smith will probably be gone. Kakko could be gone. There could be 2 open spots on the right side and no vets to compete for them because we won't have the cap space.

If Gabe produces right away, ice time will be found for him at even strength, but he's going to have to prove that he's a better option than other wingers if he wants to play on the PP or in OT. That's going to be incredibly hard for him to do given that our top 3 wingers are Panarin, Laf and Kreider. Laf is at least our 3rd best winger, and even he can't get a spot on the 1st PP. As long as the PP is producing and all the same players are available, that is likely to remain the case.

Chytil played in OT against Utah. He played in OT last year before he got hurt.

Yes, Mika gets more ice time. He's better at faceoffs and possession is hugely important in OT. Last year he had 2 out of 8 OT goals and we were 8-1 in OT. Of course he's going to continue to get OT shifts.

Mika is coming off a disappointing year, but it was disappointing by his own standards. He's still the better option over Chytil. A single game is too small of a sample size to suggest otherwise.

Yeah, luckily we are pretty loaded at wings and Smith is a decent enough placeholder for a year or so
