Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

More desirable locations I’d think.
Remember when Bobrovsky, Panarin, and Duchene bailed on Columbus in the same offseason? I know they got a good one with Gaudreau and he talked up Columbus being a nice place to live but it's probably underrated that Columbus was one of the few teams with enough cap space to sign him when he was a free agent.

How hard have you tried?

There needs to be at least one notable trade this offseason and not many players will return notable value.
If you want to trade Romanov for "notable value", it makes me wonder if you are interested in rebuilding/tooling/whatever, or just constantly shuffling the deck so that the Isles rank highly in the prospect pipeline lists?

Only you are saying that I want Romanov traded. I was just replying to a poster who was suggesting that there's no way he would be.

All I want is the for Isles is to win a Cup...And I'm hoping that Darche has a very good plan to get us there. If that involves Romanov...Cool.

However the Idea that the Isles NEED Romanov to win a Cup is ludicrous. Seems like many other teams have been winning the Cup without him.

McDavid too! :sarcasm:

I'm biased because I loved Romanov before we even acquired him, but he's probably the last D of ours that I'd trade. Sure, if someone was willing to make a crazy offer you trade him, or if his name comes up when negotiating a bigger deal with another team you discuss it, but I don't think you seek out a trade with him involved. You were talking about the need to make one notable trade this summer, and other players wouldn't have value on the market. But if we lose Romanov and keep some of the other guys....

Well you can quote me on this...

If we get McDavid while he's still in his prime I won't trade him for anything.

Respect for your love to Romanov. Of course I like him, but I just don't think he's as special as many make him out to be. I think he gets elevated because our D is SOOOOOOO annoyingly soft, and he's the only one that displays and sense of toughness. We're dying to have a more talented/tough D-corps (and team), and so it's refreshing when any player actually takes the body, much less lowers the boom, on an opposing player.

That said if we're being honest Romanov is probably a #4 D-man on a Cup winner (maybe #3 if the rest of the team is very talented).

So when you add all that up, I just see Romanov as a nice/likable D-man/hockey player overall, but not special enough that I wouldn't ship him out the door if we could package him with Danny Nelson/picks and get a legit 1st pairing defenseman.

One can go 50/50 here that BrisBois took a preemptive offer to Gourde as maybe he was a Darche target (and should have been).
The Bolts gave Gourde a contract that takes hm to the Canadian equivalent of Social Security to keep him away from Darche and the Isles? Are you sure that’s the one you want to go with?

More chatter about Jason Robertson...

everytime IB talks about the Islanders, I often feel as if he's wrong. This really should be wrong, but if the isles exchange the 1st overall for (possibly) 3rd+Levshunov, then i would take it.

I'm not trading with Chicago personally. That means we lose out on Schaefer and Misa. I'm not sold on Hagens...

Chicago would have to give their 1st child and more.
2026 UNPROTECTED 1st rounder (Chicagos) +++

I don’t really know what your point was in the first place. Darche isn’t some pariah. He was the AGM, not the GM in TB so Brisbois did what wanted he wanted to do before and after Darche.

If Darche was the one that championed the Duclair acquisition in TB, then the Isles are in for a world of hurt.

You made an outlandish suggestion for why BriseBois might have given Gourde the term he got.

100%. The infatuation with “futures” is mind-boggling. The shiny new toy, I guess?

This mentality doesn't see the other side. The reality is that sometimes there's a time to rebuild. There's a certain debate whether or not the Isles need to rebuild now, but not a single person here was saying to rebuild in 2021 when the Isles were in the semifinals.

However this team is in a downward trajectory. No doubt that's because of losing Trotz and a cumulation of Lou's lackluster/failed moves. We're all hoping that Darche is the answer and cna get this team back to Cup contention - Without rebuilding.

However what if Darche does a really good job (as in you agree with most all of his moves), but due to the lack of cap space, prospects, and overall talent, this team doesn't get past the 1st round of the playoffs for the next 5 years, and their core is all well into their 30's. Should we just keep going "all in" forever?

I mean what's your take on the Penguins right now? They have mutiple hall of famers on their roster and yet they can't even make the playoffs. I think it would be insane to say they just need a "retool." they have little cap space and no prospects to trade to not only add talent/fix their holes, but overcome the fading play of their past superstars who are still on the roster.
