Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

They sort of do. Here's a transcript of the interview translated to English. Someone who speaks French would have to verify that this is 100% correct but it's probably fairly close.

Here's a summary provided by AI.

The interview began with congratulations to Mathieu Darche on his new role. Darche mentioned his busy schedule, having just returned to Tampa after a week in New York and preparing for the NHL Combine.

On the Hiring Process and His Vision for the Islanders:

Darche explained that for GM positions, teams typically initiate contact. He presented his plan to the Islanders, emphasizing the need to be genuine rather than just saying what the team wants to hear. He believes the Islanders have a strong core (mentioning players like Barzal, Horvat, Pageau, Dobson, and Sorokin) and doesn't necessarily see the need for a full teardown or rebuild, suggesting the team can be competitive and take the next step with some adjustments. He acknowledged the team's struggles with special units and injuries the previous season but sees potential.

On Playing Style and Coaching:

Darche wants the team to "play fast," which he defines not just by skating speed but also by quick thinking and execution.1 A significant portion of the conversation covered his decision to retain Patrick Roy as head coach.2 Darche had no prior significant relationship with Roy but met with him for several hours in Montreal, did his due diligence by speaking to others who had worked with Roy, and felt comfortable and excited to work with him.3 He confirmed changes would be made to the assistant coaching staff. Darche stressed the importance of a good working relationship and alignment between the GM and head coach, a lesson learned from his time in Tampa Bay.

Organizational Philosophy and Operations:

He emphasized the importance of vertical alignment throughout the organization, from ownership down to the farm team, mirroring the structure he experienced with Julien BriseBois at the Tampa Bay Lightning. Development through the AHL farm team is a priority. Regarding draft picks, Darche views them as valuable assets, whether for drafting players or for trades, but indicated he doesn't plan to trade the Islanders' upcoming first-round pick. He confirmed he's already very busy evaluating the team, preparing for the combine, the draft, and free agency.

Personal Approach and a Noteworthy Rule Change:

Darche highlighted that while he learned a lot from Julien BriseBois, he intends to be his own person and not a "Julien 2.0," believing authenticity is key. In a lighter moment, he confirmed that players and coaches will now be allowed to wear beards, a "quick win" and a departure from the previous administration's policy.

The interview concluded with the host expressing excitement for Darche's tenure and anticipating future interactions, particularly given the local interest in the Islanders.

I think the important takeaways from reading the translation were this:

- no rebuild

- he mentions the core players in this order: Barzal, Horvat, Pageau, Romanov, Dobson, Sorokin. He then interrupts the interviewer to say he forgot Pelech. So it feels safe to assume that he's going to retain those players.

- mentions multiple times that he and Roy are on the same page with player evaluation. made it pretty clear that he was not sure if he would retain him until they spoke - he flew to Montreal and they spent 5 hours together and he decided it was a good fit.

Am I the only one here who thinks most of the guys on this roster are poor at executing the basics and lack good decision making? I've been hammering the players for years about inaccurate passes that are neither quick nor on the tape.
for me, the biggest problem is the passing component as well, especially the ability to take passes that are not directly on the tape. While most NHL players can cleanly handle a perfect pass (though there are a few Isles who struggle at this), often the lanes for tape to tape passes are not available, so you have to be able to take passes that are a in the skates or a bit ahead. Watching the playoffs, you see how well other teams do this. The Islanders consistently flub imperfect passes, which leads to turnovers and being back on the defense.
Again, as far as I know, there is no stat measuring this, but it sure seems like most of the players on the Islanders are very poor at making accurate passes and at taking imperfect passes - with Horvat and Barzal the most notable exceptions.

Does he say core? I only read the transcript and he makes no mention of a core. He only says a team with players like Pageau should not finish last.

You know the fact that Chris Lamoriello was given an extension under the table while Lou was going to leave is insanely nasty work. That kid should get a real job without grandpa' help.

Lou knew the writing was on the wall and this was to make sure his son gets paid for a good few years despite being awful at his job. It's nepotism at its worst.

This is just a metaphor for why I wanted Lou gone years ago...

He wasn't doing what was best for the Islanders organization.

It's one thing to help your kid get a job - It's another when you are literally your son's boss and you take assets away from the organization that pays you to reward your son when you'd never reward him if he wasn't.

Chris, like Lou, should be 1000% removed from the Islanders organization. Instead Lou mimicked the also-inept Charles Wang and instead of giving the inept Garth Snow a totally unjustifiable new contract - He did it for his son.

And Malkin wanted to keep him around as an advisor...?!?! Lou basically just stole some of his money.

If there’s no playoffs what good is the playoff player? You flip that guy.
No interest in being the Leafs. Pulock isn’t holding them back in salary or performance from making the playoffs.

Let’s not act like he’s Jurcina in the regular season and then McDonagh in the playoffs and that he’s useless during the year. I think we have wildly different opinions on his play and roster construction

I'm 100% disagreed with you. Pulock doesn't provide anything close to what the Islanders need out of him. His scoring slumps absolutely hold the Isles, a team that has trouble scoring, back from making the playoffs. If I can flip him to get out of his contract tomorrow, I'd do it.

Reading this post made me remember Jurcina and now I am getting mild trauma flashbacks

You simply cannot say that you're serious about improving the AHL team and not fire Chris Lamoriello. Below is a graphic that should put things into context. It's the results for all the AHL teams Chris Lamoriello has been the GM of (since his dad got him his first job)...

I don't have a vocabulary powerful enough to fully color in how pathetic this person is at his job, but let's just say that if you called these results below "utterly embarrassing" that would be a compliment to him...

This is absolutely BS. My hope was that the Long Island Country Club culture would be gone. Security needs to escort Lou off the premises. As far as his son, I will not take ownership and leadership seriously if he remains in the same capacity. I get he now has a contract but at least change his role in the organization. He can pack the bus, sharpen skates, and be the team's jock sniffer for all I care.

No...we can not pass. I look at all we play against and they all can pass....we can dump in the zone really well and not make nor catch passes very well too...always amazes me as i have played on some beer league tams that have passed better.
Yup
It’s a reason Roy has no use for Mayfield
He can’t skate, can’t make a breakout pass
He’s a rim it off the glass and ice it guy

Was born 25 years too late

Playing fast is mostly about skill- the ability to think fast, make accurate passes. I don’t see those skills on many of the players.

The good news is that Roy wants to play the same way. I’m sure Roy has been telling Darche which players are capable and which are not.
Absolutely
There’s being fast and playing fast
One is physical, one is mental

When you can get both? Really good player

How was Lou able to offer these extensions, without ownerships approval?
Doesn’t ownership have to sign off on any management contracts?
Or do I not understand how front offices work?

If the extensions happened mid season, before Malkin wanted to fire Lou then what is there to say? He’s hands off

Chris will be "Garth Snowed". He will see out his contract but will not have any position in the organization. Essentially he will be paid to do nothing for x-amount of years. He can probably retire after that.

What they should do is make him an amateur scout, so he travels endlessly on the plains of Canada, and pay him no heed at the draft.

You might be correct
But I can’t imagine a circumstance where the GM gives out contracts to other executives with ownership approval.
Then? What changed?

Either ownership was ok with Lou, his vision and his underlings, and allowed contract extensions, then suddenly pivoted to not being ok?

Something here doesn’t add up
