Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

Why would anyone want Nelson back? He is clearly on the decline and the last thing this team needs is older players. When Darche says he wants uptempo hockey players well into their 30s ain’t gonna cut it.
Correct.

There are plenty of options the Islanders have on the table this offseason- including seeing what the market is for some of their RFA's (Dobson and Romanov)- but the overall objective HAS to be getting younger, faster and more talented......period.

That is why you ABSOLUTELY squash the Palmieri pre-agreed-upon deal with Lou and you don't entertain multi-year deals with ANYONE over the age of 30.....period....which OBVIOUSLY includes any reunion with Brock.

If you follow that blueprint and hang on to your 3 first round picks in the next two drafts, then you AUTOMATICALLY avoid a bad offseason.

Stars fans are at least talking about trading him.I haven't heard any reporters talking about it though
It's just your typical fans freaking out and getting overly emotional about a player. He had 2 points and 0 goals in the first 8 playoff games but just had 4 in the last 3. So i'm sure they don't want to trade him now haha.

He's come up a decent amount prior to the playoffs. Issue is cap space and now they added Rantanen, so they might be more amenable to trading Robertson to bolster their defense.

TBH I was kinda surprised when his name was first brought up.

Yea that would crazy to me to trade a 25 yr old big kid like him who put up 79,109,80 and 80 points last 4 years. Unless they see a Austin Mathews in him who's a great goal scorer in regular season but struggles in the playoffs. He did score 2 goals in an elimination game though, unlike Mathews haha.

Dallas is in all kinds of cap trouble; so they will have to do something. Trading Robertson to fix that problem seems like a terrible idea - but he is RFA after this year, and a UFA one year after that - so he will be commanding a very hefty raise. He makes 7.7 now, which is a steal - but given his production, I'd expect he will be in the 10+ range. If this offseason gets too crazy, with Ehlers, Bennett and Boeser getting close to 10, then Robertson will be in the 12+ range.
So, you could see a scenario where Dallas decides to address their cap problem by dealing Roberston, but that would mean not taking equivalent salary back.

Did not realize that Dallas is still eating the Ryan Suter contract. Old Isles target when we needed LD and didn't have much space to sign anyone, missed out, ate shit with old Zdeno in that same spot, traded for Romanov the following offseason. Fun times.

If those three guys get $10M, then just start another lockout. My lord.

It is hilarious that the cap is miraculously rising exponentially once gambling was jammed down every persons eyeballs and ears.

its also amazing how the salary cap continues to be a net negative for everyone involved because it causes so many headaches. Owners care about being fair but you wanna give Sam Bennett 10M? NHL fans blame no state taxes but there is no way to solve incompetence. Giving Bennett over 10M? That is incompetence right there and would be catastrophic for the NHL

I would only want him back in the scenario I proposed where the Isles would be dealing Barzal to trade back up for Hagens. And using Long Island against him, it would be a "hometown discount" deal compared to what he would get on the open market. In the near-term Nelson would serve as the 2C behind Horvat and in front of the kid Centers in Ritchie/Hagens.

Once Ritchie & Hagens mature and Nelson ages further and is at the end of this next deal he would transition to the 3C role or even play on one of their wings.

If the roster shakeup does not happen, I'm in no way interested in re-signing Brock.

I agree. I think Darche will focus on the draft here over next couple years and try to shed some contracts to free up cap space. Get younger in the process. It’s nice to have a GM that is focused past tomorrow.

Palmieri and Boqvist were rumored to have deals in place with Lou. This feels like Darche honored those deals. They’re only 1 and 2 years so not crazy.

I like Palms but what a waste to sign him again.
I disagree. He’s scored 30 goals and 24 goals each of the last 2 seasons and played in all 82 games last 2 seasons. You don’t let that out the door for nothing.

Anything less than $6million and 3 years is worth is.

At 2 years $4.75 this deal is a joke brainer. It doesn’t hamstring us down the line. I like the deal alot. Especially with the cap going up.

All good, except Palms is like 47 yrs old, and not likely to duplicate past success going forward. Could have used this $ for Dobson, Romo deals, even for a swing at Marner.

If it takes us out of signing Marner I agree but I honestly don’t think it does. I think he’s still good for 20 goals. Hes 34 which still seems guys producing. That’s why I like that it’s only 2 years.

The cap is going up significantly. Plus, we still don’t know what moves Darche is planning to make to shape the roster.

Bringing Palmieri back doesn’t exactly make them faster or more skilled though
