Not to mention half the team having some form of trade protection, thanks Lou!
If Darche is smart, and all indications are that he is, then he should realize that a return to focus on drafting and building from within is going to be paramount. All the more reason that I’m anxious to see what he does with the tire fire in Bridgeport.
There are some easy moves he can do to put his stamp on the team...
1.
New BPT everything. Period. The Crunch have always been pretty good so I'm sure he understands the issue with having a historically bad AHL team. Axe Chris L. Axe Kowalsky. Bring in your guy, whoever it might be to coach the AHL. Will Boucher do it? Someone else?
2.
New Team Captain. They had no problem letting Stamkos go. Might as well see if you can deal Lee off of a 30ish goal season. Who is the new captain? No rush to name one, IMO. Horvat would be the front runner, but he's injured and if healthy he's potentially trade bait for a younger player. We also have a #1 overall on the way. Put an A on a few players for a season or two.
3.
Support Roy. This is maybe less his stamp, and more a common sense thing. Roy was working with Lou's guys. Maybe let the coach decide who he wants to work with? Desrosiers worked out great. Let Roy get a cohesive staff together, which maybe results in 1-2 new hires on the coaching staff in place of Maclean and Albelin. Krupp and Army?
4.
More Media Availability/Team Transparency. Seems like this one is already going to happen. Again, the lack of it was more of a Lou thing and this one seems like it's going to fix itself overnight.
5.
Move out one more older player. And it makes more of a statement if you have to pay to do it, so I don't think anyone is safe. Realistically we have like 10 NHL level defensemen available to us right now. At least one of the older guys needs to go.
I would prefer to keep Pelech because I think he partners really well with Dobson, and we have an NHL cusp guy in George who can fill in when he misses his 20 games. Mayfield sucks, but he's physical and cheap enough - there's a reason teams are searching for guys like him every year at the deadline.
So for me the guy that you try and move out first is Pulock. Although he's probably a good first partner for Schaefer when he enters the league, I think Mayfield could be fine as well. Pulock does have an NMC, so you're not getting any value for him if he's moved.
Would he be willing to go to STL for the Krug contract? A move like that would be similar to when TB moved out Tyler Johnson for the Seabrook contract. Clearing him and Lee would also give us 13M to play with....
