Was not talking about Marner - that’s why I said “wonder who the target is”.

Alongside signing free agents, TB have traded two firsts in a single deal twice in the last 3 years. That does not include the Jeannot trade, where I believe they traded 5 picks (including an first) and a prospect for a fourth liner. One of these three trades worked out (very) well.

You think Lou was aggressive with trading picks? It’s nothing compared to what Tampa has done in recent years.

Darche said in interviews that their window was now + the next few years. I don't think he does that if he thinks the roster is not ready. Did you even watch the podcast with him?

Sorry, is your argument that in order to be “highly competitive next year” they’re going to sign Mitch Marner….but trading picks is out of the realm of possibility?

Didn’t watch the podcast. Did he happen to mention how they haven’t gotten out of the first round despite trading 5 firsts in the last 3 seasons? Is that what he meant by “the window is now”?

I'm just saying Darche may look to add without depleting the farm. He said himself that he looks plans three years ahead, it's possible they swap players in a retool fashion that could turn around the roster quicker than what we are thinking.

Sure, anything is possible. The fact is we just don’t really know anything about the dude and we don’t know how much of a hand he had in the recent TB transactions.

The Hagel trade looks really really good right now. The Gourde/Bjorkstrand trade looks less good. Jury is out on the Sergachev trade IMO. The Jeannot trade was an unmitigated disaster. I’m not well versed enough in their cap situation to give thoughts about the Macdonough trade.

All that is to say contender or not, it’s not like TB has been this unimpeachable franchise lately. And that’s before considering their tax advantages.

At the end of the day i’d rather take a shot on a new dude than someone with a definitively bad track record. I’m a glass half full guy too, I want to hope this dude is going to kill it for us. I think the easiest way to believe that is to assume he wasn’t the driving force in most of the recent TBL moves.

I think that was part of his job to supply that data to Brisebois so knowing he has that in his back pocket is good for the isles .

Looking forward to the draft I wanted to check out some trades the lightning made around that time. As Darche was known to be the cap management guy, some of these feel pretty important and could give us hope for what he can do here.

2020: traded Ryan Callahan (5.8M) and a 5th for Mike Condon (2.4M) and a 6th and immediately buried him. So they cleared like 4M for the price of moving down from a 5th to a 6th. Not too shabby

2021: Tyler Johnson (5M) for Brendan Seabrook (LTIR). Basically cleared Tyler Johnson's cap as Seabrook was on LTIR. Another savvy cap move.

2022: Ryan Mcdonough (6.75) to Nashville for Philippe Myers (2.55). This one hurt a bit, that's not just a cap clearing move - that's a casualty.

2023: Ross Colton, Patrick Maroon, and Corey Perry for picks. Altogether cleared a little over 3M.

2024: Mikhail Sergachev (8.5) for JJ Moser (3.375), Connor Geekie (11th overall pick), and a second. The trade came 1 day before Sergachev's NMC clause kicked in, so they're obviously not afraid of making the tough calls. This move would help clear cap to bring in Guentzel, so when you look at the big picture it feels like a win.

So how does that translate to the Isles? Does Darche target an LTIR guy like Torrey Krug or Carey Price? I bet STL isn't on Mayfield's list.

Does he move one of our upcoming big money defensemen (Dobson or Romanov) to create cap to bring in an offensive player? While I'm not a fan of trading Dobson in a vacuum for picks, if the overall return was something like the Sergachev return, plus signing Marner it's hard not to see that as a win.

How about Dobson for Hayton, Lamereux and a second? Do you make that trade if you know you can sign Marner? Maybe to the Stars for Bischel and Bourque? Just thinking out loud...

Mayfield doesn’t have a list, it’s a full NTC until 2027.

All I am saying is if there is a team that wants him we have a way around his NTC, and given I don't think he has much value it's not like we would lose much if anything in return if another team grabs him

If you continue to treat NTCs dismissively, particularly for a player who took a discount to stay, you might have issues attracting players in the future.

It’s there for his protection, but it’s not a deal-breaker.

With the GM who signed him now gone, it makes perfect sense for the new GM to say, “We’re shaking things up and looking to move you, since you’re no longer part of our plans — where would you like to go?”

It’s also worth noting that his TOI has gone down under Roy.
 
I have been trumpeting this move for a while (the Darche and Goodrow connection)
Duclair for Goodrow - takes the 3.5 aav for Duclair and allocates to help strengthen the bottom 6 and PK.

Nashville's Rightside D has evaporated... Trotz knows Scotty and might see him at 3.5 as good value, especially when the cap jumps to 104 and then 113. I still say Mayfield for McCarron.

These two moves rebuild the 4th line, adding two huge pieces to the PK.
Cizikas - McCarron - Goodrow

PK 1 - Pageau and Goodrow
PK 2 - McCarron and Cizikas

Those 2 PK lines give the team superior Faceoff ability on the right and left side, size, tenacity, experience, and grit on each.

The third unit becomes -
Horvat and ?

Holmstrom is the isles best PK guy. He's usually paired with Pageau so you could put him with Horvat.
