Correct me if I’m wrong but if Engvall is buried in the minors I think his cap hit is around $1.5 million. No need to buy him out just let him ride the bus and recall if needed. Same goes for mayfield. While I didn’t care for the length these deals they are not the cap killers they are made out to be
1.85 mil. Nice savings but there is a decent additional amount per year if you buy out.
I said this a few times about Engvall but one decent thing about his contract is we can send him down not worry if somebody picks him up and call him up when we have injury issues. He is perfect in that regard for roster management

Weird, I thought Engvall was one of our more dangerous forwards at times during whatever stretch run we had. Boy, we sucked this year eh? Anyway, think he can be effective but man how do you motivate the guy?

If you buy someone out, don’t you have to pay them double the years they have left? So Engvall cap hit will go towards the Islanders cap for the next 10 years? Since he has 5 years left. I always thought that’s how it works but I don’t know much lol

It goes to 10 years years but it’s only $1m per year. It’s either $3m over 5 if you keep him or $1m over 10 for him. It would drop to $1.8 if he’s send down so essentially it saves the Isles between $1.2 to $2 depending on what they do.

He is not a "winning" player. Anyone who is making or going to make 12,13,14M per year needs to be a LEADER! He is not that, far, far from it...
Or maybe he’s not in a winning environment. The core 4 in TO is broken, although I think Bennett taking out Stolarz for the series is what turned the tables. If the Isles can get him without giving up assets, seems a no brainer. You surround him with leaders. That said, if the Isles stand pat July 1st, I’d be fine with that too.

I agree on this except, if you are the Islanders and can sign arguably a top 10 player in the game for free, you do it.

I think this is part of the other side of the story - the core of four are just not four players as a unit that can get to the next level.
Unfortunately, the Dubas/Keefe regime really embedded a passive mindset in these players that point collecting would result in playoff wins.
Agreed on Stolarz, but tbh just shows how fragile that group is. FL overcomes all of Bobs lows and highs.

Kessel couldn't be the guy, he needed to be one of the role players. It's still an important role to fulfill though.
I do not understand why a forward who is 180#'s dripping wet (probably well below that at this point in the year) is playing over 21 minutes a night the whole season long.
He's obviously a step below the real top players in the NHL (the Draisaitls, MacKinnons, Kaprizov when healthy, etc.). But he has more responsibility as a winger than all of the centers on that team with a slight frame. It's always been like that, and it's not a great deal for him.

I know we will have months to discuss this and this team doesn't even have a gm yet, but does anyone on the UFA 2025 list catch your attention? Many teams make terrible decisions on 7/1 especially with the term they hand out, and we have no idea what a new GM's philosophy will be.
Suter (Van) and Geekie (Bos)could be viable options at center. Suter was a tc invite years ago but not sure he is built for the metro. I am not 100% sure JGP finish the season due to his expiring contract and where Ritchie will fit. Perhaps a PK specialist is on that list as well.

While us actually signing them is a completely different question. Marner, Boeser and Ehlers. All 3 fill a need of improving our offense. Of the 3 I probably go Ehlers or Marner over Boeser because I honestly don't know who we would have to pass to Boeser(maybe Hagens. lol)

I would move JGP at the draft for an asset (pick I guess), then trade that pick for a player you want.
You have a point though, JGP can stay until the trade deadline, putting Ritchie as 3C and slowly integrate him. Probably net a 2nd for JGP at TDL, unless he nets 12-15 goals by that time (doubtful).
I would make some smaller moves, like trade for Robertson in Toronto. Enhance the 3rd line.

Boeser for me - RH PP shooter in Barzal's spot on the LW upgrades the PP. Put Mat on the right side so he has the ability to feed cross ice.

Suter will be overpaid. And Geekie would be awesome, but he is an RFA and Boston will resign him.
I think the team should be looking for guys they can sign for 1 -2 year deals -
- Reigning Palmieri at max 2 years is probably a done deal
- Maybe looking at Mangiapane or Kuzmenko as a buy-low top 6 option
- Jack Roslovic - although his shooting % was high this season and that may not be replicated
- They could roll the dice on Anthony Mantha
- Beauvillier could be an effective top 9 player alongside JGP and Tsyplakov
- Tanner Jeannot could be a good pick-up to rebuild the 4th line.
- Trent Frederic looks like a solid guy to ride on JGP's LW - not sure how effective his PK abilities are
- Philip Kurashev is an RFA and might not be qualified... maybe he can bounce back - QO starts at 2.25.
- Matt Grzelcyk would be a great option at low term, mid base AAV, especially since the Isles need PMD, and if Dobson is moved for a top 6 F.
- Trading Duclair for an elite PK like Goodrow or Trenin might be a better fit - same $ and term. Trenin is a big body and elite PK - stone hands, but he would help a struggling PK. money and term are exactly the same.
- Trading Scott Mayfield to Nashville for Michael McCarron, who also kills penalties and can be the 4C next year. Mayfield could also go if the Isles wanted to take on a former 1st round misfit in Lukas Reichel - more pieces would have to be involved.
- Trading Dobson for another RFA, Mason Mctavish is my preference. Anaheim has many young C's that can immediately step up - Carlsson and Zegras - they also have a top 10 pick - McQueen and Martin ease that move.
