Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

It was discussed a few pages ago, but I cannot believe there is even a thought to NOT extend Palmieri. I understand the premise to get younger and not lock a guy into a longer term contract who is 34 year old...BUT if Lou doesn't re-sign him than WHY IN THE FLYING f*** WOULD HE NOT TRADE HIM.

Now we're stuck with re-signing him. We cannot let a 20+ solid NHL RW walk away for nothing, regardless of age and current state of the team.

If Lou doesn't re-sign him, its a cardinal sin.
If Lou re-signs him for 5-7 years, its a cardinal sin.
SUCKS

Now Arthur Staple breaking that Jason Botteril is joining SEA as the new GM.

Why would Staple be breaking SEA news? Probably because Botteril also interviewed for either of the hot seats in NY.

Smoke continues to form....

Ron Francis - failing upwards. Promote the AGM that learned from him too. And made a mess of Buffalo. Yikes.

Seattle is leaning more towards Columbus expansion team vs the Vegas version.
Do we have interest in Bylsma? He's got the one cup as the interim coach, but doesn't exactly have a great track record sans-Crosby.

I think he’s looking for 3 years. Ideally I’d give him 1 and get a chance to actually follow through on trading him at deadline this year FFS. His play with out Nelson went down as predicted

That 2025 second rounder could’ve been used to further stock the cupboard or a trade chip to get this decaying roster better

On the surface it looks like Lou gave Palmieri the upper hand in the negotiations.

He’s living off lightning in a bottle Cup. Everything since then has been mediocre to poor. He’s either made poor choices for jobs or he’s a poor coach - probably both.

Ron Francis is getting kicked upstairs for Botterill who, well, stinks as a GM.

FWIW, Marek is reporting that Kevin Weekes has been interviewing for front office positions and is likely to take one soon. I don’t think any teams have official openings right now, and Marek didn’t mention any teams connected which aligns with the cone of silence.

I wouldn’t be shocked if we see Lou stay on as President and Weekesy brought in as the GM. Weekes played for Lou and was even an Islander for a season. The backup goalie to GM pipeline could live on.

From ownership perspective, it would be a Roy-like hire - big flashy name, former player connected around the league. Would likely mean Chris stays as well, for now. Could mean everyone gets what they want (but us)
Giving a commentator and ‘insider’ with zero actual management experience the keys to run your franchise doesn’t seem like a Malkin thing.

Roy was a guy with experience at what he was being asked to do, except he was ostracized. Lou gave him a chance.

One wonders whether Roy may have hurt his chances at getting kicked upstairs as a succession plan to Lou with his end of the year actions. There was a post game session after one of the games about 2 weeks ago where Clutter didn’t really seem to impressed with and also the room didn’t really care for Roy - it was subtle body language and him choosing his words carefully. I found it interesting at that time.

If they kicked Roy upstairs, be interesting to have Roy attempt to reshape the team and bring in Q as his HC. There’s better positioned teams for Q to go to - if the feeling was mutual - maybe Anaheim.

He sucks. I could have been the coach of that team instead of Dan and I would have won the cup also.

While I agree he should never have let him stay if he was not absolutely fine with the extension..... Two wrongs don't make a right. If Palmieri wants anything more than 3 years (which is still a year too long) you cannot sign him.

3 is absolute max. We know Palms wants to stay. We need to use that leverage and tell him that we'd love to have you back and retire an Islander, but the most we can do is either 2 x $3.5M or 3 x $3M and let him choose. If he doesn't accept, you let him walk. If he wants $4M-$5M+ for a guy whose stats will probably decline due to no Brock, then you fill that role with someone else, even if we do suck more because of it. That way if we do have him signed for multiple years and he declines, you just move him down a line or two and it doesn't hurt you. Don't want a $5M 4th liner in two years....

Staple didn't break anything Friedman and even Pagnotta announced it first. As much as I'd like you to be right, you're connecting dots that aren't there.

Besides, there's zero chance that Botterill (or anyone) would interview for a job that Lou currently has.

As far as I saw on twitter, Friedman broke the coaching change, not the GM change. Not sure if he said something on TV.

Pagnotta and Staple's tweets were within seconds of each other. Seems like they both got the go ahead to post about it at the same time. Still strange that the three people with the Kraken news were noted insider Elliotte Friedman, sometimes real insider David Pagnotta, and Islanders beat reporter Arthur Staple.

Jason Zucker is a good comparable to Palmieri.

The highest I would go is 4.25 for 2 years - no more than 2 years.

Random thought but is Beau worth bringing back? He can still play with speed and is familiar with the roster. Wouldn’t hurt having him in the bottom 6.

No more than two years is right. Any number starting with a 4 is good for me. Zucker, Eberle and Tarasenko are all comparables.

He can get twenty and that’s nothing to sneeze at.

Depends on contract and where you envision him playing. To me, he's 4th liner. 1x$1M deal
That’s what I’m thinking 3rd or 4th line wing. If it’s injuries, move him into the top 6 in a pinch for a game or two with Barzal. Ideally bottom 6 looks like this:
Tsyplakov/Lee-3C-Palms.
Tsyplakov/Beau-4C-Gatcomb

3C as Ritchie?
4C as Casey?

Beau is becoming duclair. On 6 teams in 3 years. He gets traded and then teams don’t resign him. Maybe the isles is the only fit for him. Who knows. I always liked his hustle but just too inconsistent.
