Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

Don't really get the glazing for Malkin. He's been here since before 2018, and Lou is still here despite cruddy ass results for years now.

First..Who's "glazing" for him? I legit see no fan here, or anywhere at games, that is doing backflips in Malkin's name.

I think by default Malkin gets credit because....Well have you seen every single owner this franchise has had since Pickett??? The best one turned out to be a total fraud.

So naturally Malkin was going to get a honeymoon phase with us fans the way an SAT taker gets 400 points for just signing their name. That said we may not agree with the way he's run everything, but he did remove snow shortly after coming on board (and that cost him a lot of money to do), spent the money to get Trotz (the reason we went to the semi-finals for the first time in 27 years), and he was able to finally build a 1st class arena. This organization was an embarrassment, and at minimum it's run like a professional franchise now and Malkin deserves all that credit.

Now it's all about the on-ice product. Every owner is just a human being who has to learn from their mistakes. I'm hoping Malkin now knows he's got one in Lou, and takes the necessary steps to get rid of him and improve on that position - No different than a owner of a company might need to fire the COO.

The honeymoon phase is ending right now. So if Malkin doesn't remove Lou in the next 2 weeks then the heat is going to go way up on him.

What do you all think a good return would be for either?
For Pulock, are we talking about a Hamonic-type trade here?
Maybe to Nashville for the 26th and 35th overall picks?
Am I reaching?

Nashville needs a right-handed D pretty badly. They're a curious team, too — they’ve got pieces that are “win-now” guys, and almost all of them have NMCs.

Not sure what Pelech would fetch. I don't think both go, but my guess is one of them does.

Montreal might need an RHD, and they have two 1st?
Ryan Pulock for the 17th OA pick in the draft?

Whatever it is you're drinking, I'd love some...

Pulock has no value, nor Pelech. Not because they are bad at hockey or their careers cannot be salvaged, but the contracts they are on. No team would touch those deals unless something equal is coming back. Had they been UFA at the end of next season, we'd be talking a pretty nice return, but they are here until 2030...

Yeah....not sure you get a first for either but i would sure take it. I would send them away for a second...hell , maybe two third. Make it a deal they can not refuse if just to move one of them and clear some cap space.

I think Malkin/Ledecky are going to learn the hard way that as crazy as the Islander fanbase is they simply will not go to games if it is not worth it to go.

watching player interviews...a lot to go yet as only so many one can watch in a sitting. I thought so far that Casey's was interesting....trying not to read too much into it but get the feeling he felt some guys were not giving it their all.

Uhh… 3 x 2.75?? Doesn’t that sound like way way way too much?

I guess that means someone is definitely on the way out, but likely multiple defensemen. Just hoping they’re going to learn their lesson about signing guys that gel with coaches… if the coach isn’t around anymore the contracts can start to look real bad, real fast.

This has to be a typo. It's probably 2.75 over 3 years. There's no way it's 2.75 annual.

With the guidelines you set forth it is impossible to make an argument. They were a very good team the first full season, were a very good team the second season and just hit a losing streak before COVID, and the next season they were right back to being a top team.

I guess Tampa doesn't count those Cups then. Montreal had one deep playoff run. The Islanders won a playoff round three consecutive years, made the Conference Finals back to back years, and go to within 1 and 2 games of beating the Lightning.

The toughest part of losing in the Conference Finals is a fan is not even losing, it's not knowing when you'll get back.
Tampa had been a consistently excellent team before Covid and then validated how good they were after by returning to the finals post-Covid, but even with that, I would bet my life that if you could give each one of the players on those teams some kind of a truth serum they would tell you that there is at the very least little tinge of regret and even a sense of invalidity that their championships came under such convoluted conditions. They have heard the talk but there is nothing they can do about, that's the way it worked out.

As for the Islanders, let's put it this way, the same core team that made those runs during Covid hasn't done a thing since but, you, just like Lou, thinks that for three years the Isles were on the edge of greatness and championships and so why mess with it? In fact, double and triple down on it. So, again, why haven't they been able to do shit since? The answer is a simple one; they weren't on the edge of greatness. And because Lou refused to see it for what it was this organization is where it is, trapped in the middle with a still weak (though better) prospect pool, a dismal minor league system and tons of horrible contracts still. As I've said before ad nauseum, for fans to engage in the kind of willful blindness and wishful thinking that has led us here is perfectly understandable but for a supposedly "legendary" GM to do it is unforgiveable.

My thing with Dobson is a little complicated.

If we signed Mitch Marner for example, I'd keep Dobson. To get a really good offensive player, if not through free agency, I think our best bet is to trade Dobson. My other issue is money. Dobson may be an RFA but this is his third contract. I don't know where he falls in line because his 70 point season is an outlier with 3 40-50 point season. I'd hate to see anything over 8.5, especially with him being a playoff no show. Also Tony D, not sure what he'll get but he can put up 30-40 at a third of the cost. He's not a replacement of course but it's a value to have.

So I'm curious how that goes. But if he's in the 7's I'll be happy.
We aren’t signing Mitch Marner. Why would he come here? We are a mess.

Well they gave Duclair 4 years, and he hasn’t proven shit.
Shows how desperate and ineffective Lou has become. People talking about Marner. Look at our last 2 off seasons. Players aren’t looking at us as a destination. We are dysfunctional.

Because Matt Martin was his buddy in Toronto and Lou drafted Marner. C'mon now connect the dots!

The Islanders had the organizational hat trick this season.

Islanders missed the playoffs.
Bridgeport missed the playoffs with one of the all-time worst seasons in AHL history,
Worcester Railers missed the ECHL playoffs.

Well they gave Duclair 4 years, and he hasn’t proven shit.
He’s proven he has a short shelf life, yet, the Isles went long on the guy. FL dumps him after seeing they should upgrade after their playoff run, he gets traded 2x after that.

Yet, Lou gives him a 4 year deal. Unbelievable.

FL and Vegas keep peeling back the onion on their roster. As players don’t further the mission or a better player is out there, they make the move. The Isles? Just keep the status quo.
