Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

The best talent doesnt always choose Florida, Texas, Washington or Nevada though. The Islanders selling point is TERRIBLE compared to every other team. If the seattle kraken got Chandler Stephenson and Brandon Montour to come along, why can't the Islanders ever do the same? What is the Islanders sales pitch to free agents?
Washington? DC may not be a state but there is an income tax there. As high as 10+%. And I wouldn't be citing Chandler Stevenson as some kind of coup for SEA. He's 30 and pretty good but they gave him 7 years and 44 mil. Some stupid deals trump taxes.

As to your larger point, no, you're right, not EVERY talented UFA player chooses a no tax state but that is the trend and that is where the best ones have ended up. To think that it is not a problem because a few players chose otherwise is not seeing the big picture. The Isles are in the same boat as a lot of teams and like a lot of teams they will have to build through the draft and with solid deal making. They just need to find a GM who is capable of that and until they do, they will continue to flounder.

I really hope there's a press conference after the season ends and Malkin announces that they're cleaning house - everyone.

And I think the new GM should look to the past and also modernize the team. I like that certain teams have a character and stick with it. Look at some of the other multi-Cup winning teams. MTL loves skill guys with flair. EDM is similar. BOS has been more of a physical, lunchbucket team, so guys like Chara, Marchand and Bergeron were perfect Bruins to win a Cup. The Isles have a history and character from the dynasty years and should try to adhere to that. A well-coached, defensively responsible, strong up the middle (goal, D and C), big team that has both grit and skill and can play any style. Lou actually did this halfway. But, this team's biggest problem has been the coaching (since Trotz), the lack of high end skill at the top of the lineup, especially finishers, and the lack of PMDs (leaving aside strategic GM moves like excessive loyalty, poor cap management, etc.).

Bring in the right dynamic GM, coach, scouts, etc.. The right coach and system might actually make some of the players that people want to move more acceptable to keep. The D has been running all over the ice under Lambert and Roy, and that's really bad for guys like Pelech, Pulock and Mayfield. And, even in the right system, having Romanov, Pelech, Pulock and Mayfield on defense is having too many guys who don't excel at puck movement. But you can keep at least two of those guys, say Romanov and Pulock. The other four D need to be puck-movers with skill and PP effectiveness. The dynasty Isles, for all the talk of Arbour and his emphasis on D, had more skill guys on D than most other teams at the time: Potvin, Persson, Tomas Jonsson, McEwen.

At forward, again coaching will help make whoever holds over more effective. Like the D, Arbour insisted that his forwards play 2 ways, but he also had Trottier and Bossy at the top of the roster, and then Goring/Brent Sutter as 2Cs for an effective 2nd line. Most of the group was big though, and gritty, and they wore other teams down but also had skill. Even a smaller skill guy like Kallur fit in as an excellent 2-way player and PKer. This won't be an easy fix, but if a new GM can figure a way to get a player or two at the top of the F group to push everyone else back a slot or two, that would be huge.

The league tends to go in cycles. Lately things have tilted towards skill and speed. That's not all going to go away, however defense still matters and it still wins, but it needs high end skill mixed in. And size matters too - all thing being equal, a big, fast, skilled guy will beat a small, fast, skilled guy in a contact sport, especially one with 4 playoff rounds.

Finally, never go into a draft without a 1st round pick - really have at least one in every round. Constantly keep the pipeline full of replacements. Sign a couple of UFAs to 1 year deals each summer for depth that allows you to keep youth in the AHL to start the year. With a good scouting staff and development you'll have more hits on picks and therefore more skill and more depth. The depth allows you to trade a couple of vets (maybe the same guys you signed as UFAs in the summer because they were replaced by mid-season callups) at the TDL and get more picks. Rinse, repeat.

We will give you 8 years when you deserve 1.

I completely agree. This team needs to take a step back next year, but the most important thing after getting younger is finding a new top guy. Having Barzal & Horvat as your 2nd and 3rd best forwards looks a lot better and might be enough to contend. Now you just need to find that guy without gutting the roster and the only way of doing that is in FA are striking on a buy-low opportunity. Like you said, Isles can't really rely on free agents so we should be looking at guys with flaws or bad years that our new coach can take advantage of.

I think every team should now write a letter each season. Apparently it makes some people feel good.

How about you don’t need a letter, you need to execute proactively and successfully? People will buy in.
Actions speak louder than words. It seems the fans are speaking with their wallet as attendance goes down. The ball is now in the owners/Lou’s court.

I prefer action over any letter. If there is no action and ownership is good with the results so be it. Then the ball will be back in our court to stay home

I'm not arguing that the Islanders' management made the right strategic decision.

Honesty requires your actions to align with your words. When someone says one thing and then does the opposite, that is, by definition, dishonest. You can't separate someone's actions from their words and then claim their actions demonstrate honesty when those actions negate the implications of their statements.

That's pretty much it.
It's never been a popular take I know but I will never be convinced that Tavares was outright lying when he said what he said. I think he believed he would re-sign at the time that he made his comments but then a playoff miss with Doug "What's Defense?" Weight and he saw an organization going the wrong way after making it two years earlier but not since and figured "why stick around for this?". Not to mention the unknown of a new GM coming in. I'm sure he felt bad about what looked like deception but that was no reason in his mind to stay in what he viewed as a bad situation, I mean let's face it, it's not like they had surrounded him a ton of talent in his time when he had given his all, which I don't think anyone could argue he didn't.

I said it then and I'll say it now, the entire f**k up was on Isles management.

If Malkin fires Lou....I don't need a letter.

If Malkin keeps Lou....Then Fans deserve a letter - or better yet a press conference - To explain to fans that he counts on to give him a lot of money and explain to all of us how he can run a team that keeps getting worse and justify not doing anything about that.

Ownership should make a move...or else...

That article is pretty much hot garbage. Doesn't say anything we don't know, doesn't dive deep into any issue, and doesn't take an opinion. Posters on these boards share more relevant information.

Attendance is down. The walk from the Emerald lot stinks. Ticket prices are high. OK - We know all this. Now what...?

How about an editorial from Newsday's staff to Malkin about why he needs to fire Lou. Now that would be something incredibly valuable.

If the team was very good the traffic and parking would be things that fans filling the arena every game grumble about. Being good is the key.

Bingo. Exactly this.

If the Isles fired Lou, got a legit President, hired a sharp/young executive to be the GM, sold off aging vets for futures, and wound up getting McKenna next year, I'd do wind sprints to the arena from the Emerald Lot.

I want to win a Cup more than anything, but I'll forego a few victories in the short-term as long as this team is on the right path. Right now this team is heading for a cliff.

Yeah, who would want to stay with a player that just won the Calder Trophy, a coach fresh off of winning the cup, and a legendary GM? Sorry, but you had me spitting out my coffee with this nonsense.

What nonsense exactly are you talking about? The season ended in April and the Isles had just finished out of the playoffs for the second year in a row even with the Calder kid so I don't know where your going with that idiotic argument. And wow, a legendary GM. You mean the same GM whose head everyone wants on spike now for running this organization back into the ground? You mean that legendary GM? Maybe that was the thing that pushed him out of here. Have you considered that? The fact remains, a fact you and others like you can't deal with, and that is the simple truth that people say things in a moment and are completely sincere in what they are saying at that time but then conditions change and emotions change and influences change and you find that the maybe you spoke too soon. If you are a human being that exists on this planet, it has invariably happened to you. But since his error in judgement affected the Isles negatively he had to be made a villain of. It's understandable, but either way, the organization had the responsibility of holding his feet to the fire before the trade deadline and didn't.

As they should. If you don’t like, then don’t pay for it. Malkin will get the message.

Looked for our season record predictions couldn’t find it . Oh well. Anyone care to find it give it a bump …LGI

What in the world do you do with Mayfield? He is immobile with 5 years left. Trading an asset to move him vs a buyout. Duclair I believe may tradeable. Dobson another question mark. Pelech can't stay in lineup.

I don't understand the Palmieri thing either, and part of that is because I do not view him as a core member of this team. He was brought in a few years ago as a piece to get over the hump and the team didn't, his services are no longer required. He's significantly older and a team likely would've paid something to get him for a playoff run. I'd like no part of re-signing him, unless it's a single year and with no trade protection with hopes of flipping him this upcoming season.
On the surface I agree with you. However, with 32 teams in the league, goals are even harder to acquire in UFA or via trade. It becomes even more difficult with the cap going up as good players get locked up and other players of Kyle's ilk drive up price via bidding war (extra cap space). If Kyle signs a short term deal for 4 mil or less, that would be a win for the franchise unless they are going to go full tear down mode.

He is a useful 3rd line player who can score 20 goals and provide veteran leadership. I don't think you can replace his production or quality on the open market without paying far more than what you'd be paying him. I still think he has juice left, but as a 3rd liner. He's not a bad player.

Lou has never understood that cap space is in itself an asset unfortunately. He never did. It's why we lost Toews for nothing. We will finally get cap space this offseason, but unfortunately so will everyone else. It's hard to envision much change to the roster because of this.
