Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

Nothing in Lou's MO suggests anything but a lengthy deal for Dobson. The AAV will probably be lower than expected but it'll be 8 years and a full NMC. It's the type of deal he's been handing out to every RFA/UFA of note for years. It's the type of deal that has people go "Oh, that's a steal!", but will sour pretty badly over time, like Pulock and Pelech.

Totally agree that Lou's MO is always "lengthy" deals, but it's also in his MO to hand out AAV's at least in line with the market if not a bit above. There isn't a player on this team on a long-term deal that is underpaid. In fact several are vastly overpaid.

Barzal, Dobson, and Sorokin on long term deals = Annual overpaid, under-performers on anchor contracts. Never gonna win anything with those three as your core.
And that is exactly why at least 2 of the 3 above players need to be traded in order for this team to meaningfully improve. Improving the bottom six and bottom pair defense are needed but the core players are the real issue with this team. I would also throw Horvat in that group but I don’t see him getting traded.

My memory is that when Pelech and Pulock were given their contracts, it was seen here as great moves at the time.

Maybe. But Dobson is an RFA, not a UFA, so he has value as an asset and can be dealt.

We'll see what happens. If they do call around about Dobson though, BUF makes a lot of sense as a destination. Their top 4 D are all LH shots, and Byram is also an RFA like Dobson. McLeod, Peterka and Quinn are also RFAs.

And yet, together with Horvat, Romanov, and Holmstrom, that's exactly what they are...
And that ain’t winning anything either.

All we have seen as a 4 line team operating as a unit, that was a not so talented bunch can wear an opponent down and win games, especially winning games in the 3rd period.

Now, that strategy is no more, the player composition has changed, and none of these guys are good enough individually or collectively to carry the team as a unit.

I don’t care what style they play. Watching Cappy-era you knew they were gonna lose in the 3rd. Trotz you knew they could win and did win in the 3rd. This Lambert/Roy-era is just a slapstick mess.

You would have me with you if you did not have Barzal on that list. How anybody could group him in with those other two based on "winning" or "clutch" or "contributing in a big spot" makes no sense.
Dobson has zero goals in 30 playoff games and barely averaging a point every 3 games. Sorokin has accomplished next to nothing in the playoffs, I would actually say he has been a detriment the last two years in the playoffs yet he gets a pass from most around here.
Then we have Barzal who has 17 goals and 45 points in 60 playoff games, including numerous OT and game winning goals. There is no chance we go to two straight conference finals without Barzal.
The hate he gets is so asinine its hard to put into words. No he is not McDavid (by the way what has he won more than Barzal), but there is no doubt in my mind that Barzal could be a top line forward on a cup winning team.

Your right. I was one who was thrilled with the deals. It’s seemed as if isles locked up two studs for term and fair value.

Just like all long term deals they are a gamble. Sadly Lou’s gamble have not paid off.

All the things you point out about Barzal were accomplished under Trotz 4 line team where he was in a supporting role.

Post Trotz where he’s been taking a lead role, there’s not much there to get excited about. Sorry.

Not to point out the obvious, but has there really been anything to be excited about in the past 3 seasons? Barzal had 80 points last season and has 4 goals and 7 points in 11 playoff games over the past two seasons. Again not saying he is capable of singlehandedly leading a team to the cup, but he is pretty much last on the list of problems with this organization.

islanders badly need changes. I will keep saying this until the cows come home. Get SOMETHING to make this team interesting. Change them! Make this team something better than bland and boring.

throttle, with all due respect

shut the f*** up about Barzal and Sorokin for one minute and realize this team aint going anywhere sitting on its ass, letting the fingers stay glued to the seat and say "well we're better if we have them healthy" or some really dumb platitude. Maybe if the Islanders didn't mortgage their future for a platry three playoff wins in three seasons for meh players in Horvat and Romanov, done absolutely nothing about the D core besides the aforementioned Romanov, refused to fix the power play and PK with nepotism hires from mister magoo, and the team refuses to change a single thing about the front office. but its Sorokin and Barzal's fault man. What a god damn pea brained take from a fanbase that boo's Tavares when he's the most talented player this franchise ever had since Palffy. Shameless.

news flash: THE ISLANDERS ARE A BAD HOCKEY TEAM AGAINST REAL PLAYOFF TEAMS. Ilya Sorokin has to bust his balls just to even come close to getting this sack of shit team to the playoffs. Advanced analytics LITERALLY suggest this is a team buoyed by a goalie having to do everything. I hate Noah Dobson too but the guy literally gets zero offensive drive alongside him: its ONLY him and maybe if god wills it, Scotty Mayfield coming along with Barzal. This is what pisses me off about this team: the inability to realize the real flaws, using draft picks to "gain" players but rewarding loyalty because they stuck with us for so long. We are no different from the White Sox or Rockies or Bulls.

Make changes. Adapt to the modern NHL, or be a team that happily sits in no mans land with zero opportunity to improve and grow as a hockey franchise. You know why kids love the rags on LI? Because the Islanders stopped giving a f*** about the future and only focus on the 80's. Thats a cold harsh reality this fanbase needs to realize and accept.

and im sorry for the long rant but the past three-four seasons at UBS have shined a very ugly light on the Islanders franchise, and it only gets worse the longer the Lamoriello's are in charge, and the longer John Ledecky and Scott Malkin sit around counting dollar bills.

Next year I would rather sign up to watch a 2024-25 Sharks season with a youth movement compared to re-watching the 2024-25 Isles season.

At least there would be something refreshing to see, in some new young blood and something to evaluate.

I know this is blasphemous, but it's where I am.

They had an attendance bump this year from last year.

Sorry the truth hurts, despite the ongoing excuse making.

Know what you're saying but there's no Celebrini, Eklund, or Smith here to go watch.
