Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

I'm not ready to jump to this conclusion yet. I want to, but we still don't know if he learned that his Mom has terminal cancer and has 1 month to live or some crazy life shit like that.

I'm not expecting that kind of news to be released so if something like that is happening in his life to ruin his game to the point where he has to step away from a team that is floundering, I'm okay with it.
If that were the case I think this team would have helped him.

Say what you want about his personel decisions, but from all player accounts I heard Lou is quick to take care of guys that are in tough spots. Most recently Eberle and his visa situation while he was playing with Seattle.

He's on his 9th team in 11 years. A little time off isn't going to change anything.

The measure of Lou's desperation this year is perfectly demonstrated by two acquisitions: Duclair and DeAngelo. Two guys he wouldn't have had on one of his teams in a million years if the ship weren't sinking.
Engvall contract year before was desperate too.

That is quite the take, given the ownership history of this team.
I know right, LOL....

They are letting this shit show go on and on. Our AHL is a joke, Lou's Son is incompentent and should not have a job. The Lou & Roy show is comical. Once again, we are looking like a joke of an organization to everyone in the NHL.

It absolutely isn't. Ritchie is now the closest thing to that.

Dobson and Holmstrom are the two Lou-time picks that have become useful NHL regulars.

Raty is actually the only other one to be playing NHL hockey right now.

Even if you want to be fair and say we should only really evaluate Lou's first four drafts here, that's all we've got from them.

You don't say.

It's naturally wonderful that Snow somehow managed to turn Reinhart into Barzal and Beauvillier. Might have been his singlemost wonderful move as a GM.

But the opportunity to create a long-term, competitive team was ended by what came of the drafts between 2010-2014.

None of Niederreiter, Strome, Reinhart, or Dal Colle turned into star players for this team, but that's what Snow absolutely needed to get from those high ranking draft spots.

We've often wondered what things could have been like if, after strong drafts in 2008 and 2009, Snow had added say Skinner, Scheifele, Rielly, and Nylander instead of Niederreiter, Strome, Reinhart, and Dal Colle.

Indeed, a heavy case of hindsight here, but these are all guys who went within 3 picks of who Snow actually selected.

Here's the business directory. I see a lot of unknown names here - or names we very well know, but didn't realize they're scouting for us (like Vladimir Malakhov, who is listed as a European pro/College free agency scout).

Clear is, both Klatt and Kautonen still have chief positions on the staff. And they were around for all those Snow years, if I remember correctly.

Awesome breakdown which brings more sadness to the situation haha.

Seeing all those names is just so sad because I feel like I remember each time I thought, okay we got a good one finally, this is gonna be a huge piece of the future. Then it wasn't.

If you had to buyout Duclair or Engvall, who are you selecting?

Duclair.

Hated this signing from the beginning. Not gonna go back and revisit those, but I was very opposed to this. Plenty of reasons it wouldn't work out, only a small chance it would, and it's been a complete disaster.

@impaaaaaact thought dude was gonna be great and defended how he had a couple of good seasons. He's not great, he's barely touches good on rare instances, and clearly this signing has been an objective failure with a player who clearly has a shit attitude and can't last on a team.

To be fair, when your defenseman keep dropping like wasps in gasoline, you are desperate. Pretty unfair to bring up DeAngelo in that regard, especially since he's a way better pickup than more waiver dumpster diving.

Tough one, but I think I'd buy out Duclair. Engvall has responded ok this year after early benchings, and brings more than Duclair. Duclair has shown who he is across many teams, he's not suddenly going to be a hard worker, and I've not seen any skills that warrant the ice time he's getting. The buyout would also be shorter than Engvall.

That’s mostly due to his inconsistency and tendency to float. He’s still good for 20 goals and 40 pts, at the least.
you realize he's only done that 4 times in his 11 year NHL career - most seasons he's not good for 20/40, misses significant time due to injury, floats, plays poor defensively and drives coaches nuts.

I watched him closely in Florida and Tampa; I liked what I saw.

I don't disagree with that and DeAngelo has been very good overall. My only point is that because of our dismal organizational depth Lou was forced to bring in players who, from a character and/or work ethic point of view, he would not normally have on one of his teams.

Mental health issues or not, a quick look at Duclair record should raise a few red flags, but clearly Lou didn't do his due diligence properly.

This team is now stuck with a whole bunch of players on contracts they can't get rid of, yet the GM and owners seemingly believe they are going to take strides next season? It's madness.

Would you consider moving Duclair (3y @ 3.5 AAV) for Goodrow 2 years @ 3.65?

If I had to, I’d probably choose Engvall. Just would rather take my chances on Duclair finding his form again and becoming a solid middle six scorer.

Having said that, a buyout for either one of them makes almost no sense and I’m not sure why it’s brought up as a good option. The difference in the cap hit between buying out either player vs. burying them in the minors would be about $800k-$900k, except with a buyout Duclair is on the books for an extra three years and Engvall for an extra five years. We would pretty much be adding dead cap for multiple seasons in exchange for a meager one league minimum contract if we bought either of them out.

And what are the chances of that for a prospect coming to the NY Islanders organization as currently constructed?

For our top kids in the NCAA, Eiserman topping the list, the best thing for their development is to stay in college.

Gotta hope that something gets changed in BPort by the time they go pro, likely already next summer.

On the other hand, despite all the losing, we have seen some good stuff from Jefferies this season who has basically been given a top 6 role and pretty much run with it, highs and lows included. Ultimately, if you're playing down there, you're still facing a lot of good competition and a grueling schedule with lots of time travelling included.

But the overall developmental situation there is worrisome when you see the drops that Dufour and Maggio and a few others had over the years.

Holmstrom is really the only forward prospect I can think of in recent times who has spent multiple seasons learning the ropes down in BPort and turned out to be a plus player for us on the Island.

MacLean is a nice lunchpail story for a non-drafted player and Gatcomb is more a sign of some pretty solid pro scouting, I'd say (likely Morrow's work - and they always know what's going on over at UConn and Quinnipiac).

Gonna be interesting to see what goes on down there as soon as this offseason.

I'm willing to bet that the Duclair signing was more about Lou actually letting Roy get to bring in one player with the limited funds available. He prolly let him know what he's willing to chip out and that this is Roy's courtesy shot to get someone he'd like for the top 6.

For the money presented, Duclair was the guy Roy knew he could bring in.
