Good, sell high bc paying him is going to end badly.
I don't have a problem trading him in the off-season. But I'm not trading for low value.

My opinion is, we get rid of Lou and Roy after the season. Bring in a new young GM with a fresh look. Give him an opportunity to bring in "HIS" guy as coach and let them evaluate Dobson and decide....

let's not just throw this kid away.

On the presser, to paraphrase, I think he talked about it not being the best players who win but the best team... To some extent that is correct, as a good room adds to success, but someone needs to push him on the fact that if you don't have the talent on the ice, a good room doesn't win $%^& .

He sounded like a politician and to see how the long-term contracts he has given out recently and how they have looked, ownership needs to force him to step away.

Once Nelson was removed, he needed to make the hard decisions to add what he could for assets to re-tool this summer while seeing if he could manage to get some on ice help now similar to the Zetterlund or even Mittlestatd deals. It's possible nothing was there, but I don't feel he has the vision now that some other Elite GM's have.
If you're asking for my opinion, I would have traded Palmieri and moved on from Lou.

That said, I understand Lou's perspective. I can appreciate allowing the team to fight it out with Palmieri and that other moves could happen at a different time—perhaps when there’s a better return or more teams are in play due to cap restraints. If they re-sign Palmieri to a two-year deal, I won’t be mad about it.

No beat reporter is going to outright say the team isn't good enough to contend, especially when they’re three points out with games in hand. For the record, I’m not saying they’ll make it either, but the true direction of the team will become clear this summer.

You might be right about vision, but outside of the Devon Toews trade, I haven’t had issues with Lou’s moves. In fact, I think he made a very good one with Nelson.

Lou didn’t sound like a politician to me—he was direct. He said he wanted to keep Brock, offered him what they thought was a fair deal for the franchise, and it wasn’t enough. Period. He also mentioned that there were several players they could have moved but felt it would be better to revisit those situations later. Again, very direct.

Having vision requires creativity, risk, and aggression. This summer will be a tall task, but they have to find a way to get younger and replace Nelson with someone better. EP40, despite his struggles this season, could be the answer. A player who’s had back-to-back 90+ point seasons doesn’t just lose that talent overnight. His dip in production may be due to media pressure, injuries, or other factors. If he weren’t struggling, he wouldn’t be available.

You don’t get younger through free agency—those players are usually past their prime by the time they hit the market. The real opportunity is in the RFA market, which is why I bring up Mason McTavish as a potential fit if they’re willing to move Dobson.

Another possibility is trading a top pick in 2025 for a younger, high-impact player. Would teams like Seattle, Montreal, LA, Anaheim, or St. Louis part with a promising young player for a draft pick they really like? Or do teams like Carolina, Ottawa, Detroit, or Buffalo—who may want to shake things up—consider moving a piece from their core?

My hope is that the draft pick is really high - not to trade necessarily, but it gives them options in case, say, someone like the Kings comes calling and says, we like the 5th OA pick and are possibly open to moving Byfield? What do you say Lou?

Like the most punchable GM in the NHL?

Same, I’ve been eyeing that move for a while also. With Lou trying to field a competitive team while also getting younger, I wouldn’t mind a Pageau + 2026 Col 1st for Zegras. He could hold down the 2C spot for next season while Ritchie slots in as the 3C.
Best case scenario they both perform well, Zegras moves to LW1 and Ritchie to 2C. If Ritchie plays eel and Zegras is alright, he goes to LW2 and Ritchie to 2C the following season. I feel that trade gives us a lot of flexibility and upside. If we want to get back in it we need to make risky trades for underperforming players (Pettersson, Zegras, etc.) like the Caps.
There is a fit there for Pageau.

I’ll be honest I don’t want Zegras but understand your reasoning.

My problem with Lou at the trade deadline is that he wanted to keep Nelson and Palmieri.
ok, but let us say his intent over the summer is/was to get rid of Pags & Casey.....let's say we do it anyway...who are are centers?....If i had to keep one of the three it would be Nelson, for the right price and term.

Well, last summer was the first time we used a first rounder since 2019. That was 4 straight drafts without a 1st rounder, something you usually only see with teams that have been competing directly for the Cup for a number of years in a row.

3.5 MM per year for 4 years for a guy who played for 7 teams in the past 7 years.

And we all speculated he'd be signed solely based on him having played in juniors for Roy.

The deal would be worth it for us if he was even a 20-20-40 player.

Well, Boqvist hasn't been signed, just plucked off waivers. Good pick-up. Him and DeAngelo together have many thinking Mayfield is DEFINITELY disposable and a big Dobson trade could be something to target in order to bring in a prime, mid-20s forward.

And Perunovich's weakness is actually his skating, which STL fans mentioned right off the bat and we noticed within his first few games. Still, a decent pick-up with a good eye and some shake-n-bake. On whole, basically another Sebastian Aho.

All three are either UFAs or RFAs this summer.

I know the reviews of this deal have been more than solid/complimentary but those thinking a 27th overall pick who disappointed at the WJC and only has 15 goals for a strong Oshawa side (granted, he's clearly more of a playmaker) is a surefire blue-chipper would be advised to temper their expectations.

Ritchie really isn't the best skater out there. Sure, he otherwise looks like he's gonna make it as an NHLer.

We can dream he's gonna be a Ryan Getzlaf or Nick Suzuki. Let's do that.

But it's very possible he's gonna be a Kirby Dach.

If the 1st is a '26 pick and the Avs falter next season, that could be that which makes this deal really promising.

That should have been an absolute given.

BTW, they might as well be putting Martin in the line-up with every opportunity now.

Yep, after what the fanbase here suffered in the Tavares debacle, it should be an absolute given that if a UFA isn't ready to sign a deal before the trade deadline in a year where we're outside of a playoff spot, he's moved.

No ifs, ands, or buts.

You get something for him and let him know you can talk again in the offseason.

That is being realistic. That is being pragmatic. That is respecting what this fanbase had to suffer through when it lost the face of the franchise for NOTHING. Not even for a playoff run.

And I don't think anyone should give two $&%s about what Lou said before the San Jose game - it was basically the same doggone thing he said after the last deadline.

He's doing the exact same crap for the 4th year in a row save for the move Nelson forced his hand with.

It's telling on social media to see how many people allow themselves to be duped over and over again...

Exactly!

But either the owners decide to do it - or they don't.

Looks like the only thing one can do now is stop going to the games until there's a change in direction.

It seems like while we may disagree on some of the positives/negatives of the past year, overall you and I both agree more needed to be done at the deadline as well as more roster moves in the offseason.
