Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

Until he stops playing like a Marsh-mellow, he will never reach his potential

I think that is something a player either has or doesn't, it is innate and cannot be taught. You can almost always tell when someone is going outside of their comfort zone with the physicality and it is very awkward. I'm not talking about a player growing into their body or their skillset. Young players take time but if you have an aversion to physicality at all stages of your early career it's increasingly unlikely that you'll develop that as you get older. Dobson doesn't have it and I don't think he ever will.

He might be a useful player but he won't ever reach the top tier level because his defensive play and willingness to play tough just isn't naturally there.

so, let's say we do trade Nelson and Palms at the deadline. Let's say we also shut down Duclair and Barzal doesn't come back for the remainder of the year. That's 4/6 of our top 6 to start the year... which means the rest of the season we're running out:

Lee- Horvat- Holmstrom
Tysplakov - Pageau - Engvall
Fasching - Cizikas - Foudy
Martin - McLean - Gatcomb

Could very well end up in the top 5 or 6 picks. Plus the ammo we get from Nelson + Palms... that could be 2 more firsts and a prospect. It feels horrible, but this is what we should have been hoping for all season.
Add Pageau - I think he goes as well.

No need to shut down Duke - let him play, so maybe they could trade him too in the offseason. Shutdown Mayfield, who looks like he is still injured.

If Lamoriello makes every move you want him to make before the deadline are you going to give credit to Lamoriello or will you give all the credit to Malkin even though there is no evidence of him meddling?

I'm going to still want him fired because we stink and are getting worse...And it's literally all his fault.

And since there was zero proof the Snow was getting fired when he did (or being replaced by Lou), you actually have no proof that Malkin/Ledecky wouldn't be forcing Lou's hand. Given Lou's history he's probably the #1 GM in the entire NHL to NOT trade a pending UFA at the deadline. Pretty much any other GM in the league and you could feel confident that at least Nelson would be traded (if not already).

So not going to give Lou credit for doing literally the most obvious, sensible, and common sense thing a GM could do in his situation...No more so than I'm going to give him credit for Nelson/Palmieri NOT getting injured tonight when they both should be held out of action.

These are both things other GMs on non-contenders are already doing with lesser assets (and without their owners stepping in). Are you impressed with those other GMs...?

Any my lord if he doesn't sell I hope you hold him as in total and utter contempt as you could for severely damaging the future prospects of your favorite team.

That's completely fine.

You can't prove a negative. If you make the claim that ownership forced his hand then I expect some evidence of that. That's all I'm asking.

I didn't say I was impressed or that you had to give him an award. Just an acknowledgement that he did something right, even if it is the most sensible and easy thing to do.

I don't lose sleep over my favorite team. If he doesn't trade them, and worse, re-signs them, I'll be as annoyed as someone can be. There's absolutely no reason for it. I don't think they should be playing tonight if there's any chance they're dealt. It's a mistake to have them go out there.

It means absolutely nothing but interesting for us to talk about.

This feels more like July free agency guesses for Nelson. I don't know how Guerin could fit Nelson in at this point, but buzz is it's pretty much a lock that Nelson goes to Minny in July.

Yet reason #4.591,037,268 to sell him this week.

Is Mike Rupp out to lunch - how is Minnesota, who is already up against the cap, going to fit Nelson AND Rantanen.

Bingo. Drives me crazy when people who get paid to analyze anything know less than the viewers they're trying to inform.

At this point he’s either going to be traded or re-signed

The worst thing that can happen is if he isn’t moved and just walks. That’s a dereliction of duty.

My order of best to worst case:

1) He's traded
2) He's traded and re-signs with the Islanders in July
3) He walks
4) He's extended

Value needs to be gotten here. If he wants to come back at a reasonable price he's a veteran worth keeping around. The reason extending him is bad is because no value will have been gained and he'll be a further diminishing asset. He's only worth keeping around as a veteran if there are young players to mentor. We don't have many of those right now and there are more than enough guys on the roster to fill that role for the ones we do have.

I agree with your order. Lou is just a wild card. Will he see what everyone else sees and understand this team needs to get assets and start to re-tool?

It’s just hard to know the direction he will choose.

Team needs to infuse some Legit young talent.

He will dissect every move with a fine tooth comb with this preamble: "It should be painfully obvious to everyone that Lou can't do his job because .... <insert random opinions here and no facts>" and then he'll write another letter and start the billboard GoFundme.

I'm off from work on Friday so I'll be smashing the refresh button just like everyone else to see what happens.

My gut says he'll make some trades because it's just too obvious for everyone to see what's happening. If he doesn't then it'll signal he's really out of touch more than even I thought possible.

Brother, I think you are right...
Not happy saying it either....

Hope the market is as desperate and sellers market as it looks now. Sometimes waiting till the last minute can bite you. Maybe we see a move(s) Wednesday or Thursday

What went on with Brock Nelson after tonight’s game makes me think he’s turned down Lou’s offers and expects to be traded. I get the feeling Brock is looking for a big payday and he knows the Isles can’t afford him.
I think he gets traded to LA, but signs in Colorado or Utah in the summer.

About time you guys are the main talking point for TDL.

It's never been clear before whether Islanders are selling for sure or not. This week will be fun

I bet he'd like to go to the playoffs with some team that isn't a pretender.

imo the Avs make the most sense as a destination. They really could use a center to take some of the load off, and Mittelstadt ain't it. I don't know what that means about what would come back, but if I'm the Avs, I don't want to waste peak years of MacKinnon, and Makar. I'd want to surround them with the best teammates for a playoff run. Heck, they could use both Nelson and Palmieri.
