Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

I actually take the current lack of rumors in the last few days as a good sign. cone of silence.

When have you ever heard a rumor about an Isles move under Lou before it actually happened? Heck - There are some signings he made that we didn't get confirmation on for months.

It was also a "cone of silence" when Lou let All Star in his prime Zach Parise walk for nothing from the Devils in 2012.

Silence means zero with Lou running things. The only thing that matters is that he's the captain of the Titanic right now and I'm praying that Malkin removes him before we his the iceberg.

If Lamoriello makes every move you want him to make before the deadline are you going to give credit to Lamoriello or will you give all the credit to Malkin even though there is no evidence of him meddling?

Frederic got a 2nd and 4th. Palms should be able to fetch a similar return and Nelson should get a 1st+ easy. Evans resigned with MTL so there's another center off the trade board. Would be criminal not to move Nelson right now

Currently holding the #8 overall pick with top 5 a real possibility. If you’ve been watching this team all season, everyone here should be hoping for a top 5 pick. Nelson, Palmieri, Pageau along with Pulock or Pelech all need to be gone for the right price. Someone wake up old bag Lou.

1. Schaefer
2/3/4/5: Some mix of Misa/Hagens/Martone/Frondell
6/7/8: Some mix of Desnoyers/McQueen/Mrtka

Every player on this list fills a need. It's after pick 8 where things get a little more dicey.

so, let's say we do trade Nelson and Palms at the deadline. Let's say we also shut down Duclair and Barzal doesn't come back for the remainder of the year. That's 4/6 of our top 6 to start the year... which means the rest of the season we're running out:

Lee- Horvat- Holmstrom
Tysplakov - Pageau - Engvall
Fasching - Cizikas - Foudy
Martin - McLean - Gatcomb

Could very well end up in the top 5 or 6 picks. Plus the ammo we get from Nelson + Palms... that could be 2 more firsts and a prospect. It feels horrible, but this is what we should have been hoping for all season.

Good. It wouldn’t be the worst thing for the franchise.

This is exactly how these things should be done in my opinion. We're not talking about tearing it all down to the studs and selling everything, this is moving two valuable pieces during a down year and shutting down two players due to injury. That alone can re-coup a bunch of assets that can be used to jump start the next iteration of the team. This opportunity has also happened organically and didn't require insane moves or cap dumps to happen.

Grab the assets from trades, continue along the path with what we have available with that crap roster the rest of the way, trade more pieces in the summer if needed (it's needed), and then go into next year with a vastly different looking roster.

Plus we get Martin to 1000 games. Everyone comes out happy.

I’d love to take the two picks we get from Nelson and Palmieri and package them with something to grab a second pick in the top 12. Coming out of this draft with something like Frondell and Mrtka would be huge.

Of course not. The narrative will immediately shift to complaining about something else.

Minnesota or Dallas

You NEED to swing a deal with either team

Detroit or Winnipeg

DET:
I continue to look at Detroit, 'cause if there'd be a bidding war, few teams can divvy up what they can, Nelson & Larkin have played well together at Men's WCs, and Nelson would be an ideal 2nd line center for this upcoming PO team that would be making the POs for the first time in, well, forever.

I also think, at his age, with Detroit's outlook in the coming years, and with it's general proximity to home, it'd be one of his absolute desired locations on the open market.

WPG:
My other guess would be Winnipeg... Not only would he bolster this team significantly in what should be a fascinating PO battle out west, but he'd surely Ok the move too (if da Peg isn't already on the 16-team list) in light of what could be a very long playoff run with regular visits from family and old UND friends.

Aside from that, even though Winnipeg would otherwise likely lose a bidding war from an assets approach, I think they'd consider taking on Mayfield as well in this move (as Winnipeg is felt likely to lose UFA DeMelo this summer) and STILL toss over young UFAs Kupari & Heinola to help us finish the season, NHL-ready prospect Rashevsky (KHL contract ends this offseason), very promising RHD Elias Salomonsson, and their 1st rounder.

I have hard time thinking even Lou would turn down something like that if Nelson and Mayfield would be on board with it!

But I might as well digress, fully aware of Lou's MO to date...

I really hope that they trade Dobson now before the other GMs see that he is not the 70 point top pair defenseman from last year.
That hit from last night was so weird. Maybe he’s trying to show that he can play physical, but why would you choose to do that when your #1 job is to keep the puck in the zone? Was super weird

I don’t necessarily disagree, but the issue with a Dobson trade is that it should be for a high end forward and I just don’t see another team in a playoff race making that kind of trade as a deadline move.

A high end forward from a team not in the playoff race?
