This is the beginning of being the Buffalo Sabres.

Barzal, Zegras, and Mittelstadt on one team. At least it will be an entertaining trainwreck of annual lotto picks.

- Mailloux could potentially push for an NHL job next season, and gives them options away from Tony D which seems like a wise move given his past volatility.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when those two get to chatting with each other.

This is exactly the type of thing I'd love to see from Lou - we could essentially replenish our entire prospect pool this offseason. With that many picks in the top two rounds maybe you even see a trade up for Hagens.

Interesting thoughts there.

And if management would have any hopes of grabbing Hagens, it'd likely take a nice little trade into the top 2-4 to get it done.

How do they replace that production? The UFA market - Granlund, Zucker, (maybe Duchene), or trade market Mittelstadt do not really inspire much confidence. IMO, If they could resign him for 3 @ under 7 - you do it.

With the cap going up and the UFA center market being what it is, I've started thinking that Nelson could realistically get 8+ over 4 years from somebody.

Does he skip out on that?

The Wild are in a better position to make some noise in the playoffs than the Islanders are. That plus playing in Minnesota might make the Wild an attractive team.
Are they? Really? I think they're the same pretenders. They haven't won a playoff round in a decade, and won a second round only once, 20 years ago.

Actually, that means we can give him $4 million for 8 years . . .

Anyhow, I'm amazed how much debate is happening when it really comes down to a few possibilities . . . extend, trade or keep and risk UFA.

Meanwhile, the world is still here . . . Cyndi Lauper needs to be inducted . . . the Jets need a QB and OL . . . Perif needs closure . . . Bones still hates Bailey . . . SI has writer's cramp . . . Kendrick hates Drake . . . and I still dream of Sophie Marceau . . . did I leave anything out?

It doesn’t matter what they’ve done in the past. The team now, as they are, is solid at forward and in goal. Just need an upgrade of a mjddle pair defenseman and they’re a legit cup contender in 2026.

Mittelstadt Is not a good player. Buffalo saw that, Colorado was dumb enough to think he was a good player, now realize it and want to upgrade and move on. Yet, he’s a good fit for NYI? Ok…

Robertson’s brother in Toronto.
We need to stay far, far away from Mittelstadt....For me, I'll take a 2026 1st rounder for Nelson....much better and deeper draft.

3 years at 7 mil and Brock has done us a favour, IMO.

Tough tough decision on Brock. He’s been a Good islander. We don’t really have a replacement and will likely get worse by letting him go in the short-term.

I don’t think that’s gonna happen.
Well then you definitely don't trade Dobson for the hell of it.

Throttle still hates Barzal

Nelson is on the decline with the Isles. He might not be washed up yet, but the way the Isles roster is shaping up there is little for him to help improve and get back to 30+ goal seasons for years to come. Does he want to stick around and be part of rather quick decline as our players age or does he look for chance to win? I'm sure some players would rather just decline and stay put, whereas others won't. The last thing the Isles should be doing is sticking to Nelson just because.

does resigning Nelson to something reasonable have a different opinion when knowing Lee , Pageau , Palmieri (sooner than the other 2 , I know)are out the door soon enough ?

I had one huge advantage . . . I married a Colombian and her folks were lacking in English skills . . .

If we re-sign Nelson what makes you think Lou won't extend Lee? The captain actually remade himself in the off season and is having a better year than anyone could have imagined.

If the determining factors for extending Nelson are loyalty and difficulty in replacing his 30 goals, I expect the same to apply to Anders Lee.

Here's the thing - as their scoring drops off, Lee still adds something to the team, and can be effective in a 3rd-4th line role. imo not the case with Nelson.

Hobart lax is still mid (although their uniforms are elite).

I fully expect (and word on the street is) that if Nelson doesn't agree to a deal, he will be traded.

GIven Lou's principled and past ways I won't believe Nelson is traded until things we're worth of a team announcement.

Also in the "trade Nelson no matter what". This is GM 101. He is old, has value and is a UFA. If you want him back you tell him you want to improve the club now and still want to discuss an extension this summer. Inking him before the deadline also makes very little sense. Get what you can now and worry about re-signing him in July. If he doesn't, so be it hes 34. This is not a team that is about to go on a run and if by some slim chance we squeak in again we will absolutely be done in 5-6 games max. Get value for who you can and retool this roster so that in 2025-2026 you have more youth and talent going forward. Goal needs to be teams that can compete for a cup not for an 8th seed.

You sir, both get it and see the big picture.
