Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

I find it very interesting that the Nelson and Dobson "behind the scenes" plans are so widely known to league insiders. That usually doesn't happen with Lou so either there's a rat or it's a smokescreen.
I think it might mean some of these talks got pretty advanced. Elliotte mentioned that he started to hear about something 6 weeks ago involving Dobson, but he did question it’s authenticity

I hope so. Acquiring Petterson would require a large price, but I'm not sure he moves the needle in terms of Cup contention - And especially if Vancouver didn't retain a large portion of his salary.

Plus I just don't trust Lou anymore so a big deal like that would further commit us to another long-term contract (that still may not make this team a Cup contender), while giving us further roster options in the years to come.

We just need a new GM to start fresh with this roster/prospect pool/picks and fix the numerous player/cap/farm system issues Lou has saddled us with.

I haven't seen much discussion here about the new rules where CHL players can switch to the NCAA. I imagine that top picks will still try to turn pro asap, but guys who need to marinate a few years now have the option of switching to the NCAA and then becoming UFAs, right? That's kind of big.

Fine. Send Quinn Hughes this way.:naughty:

I'm not sure I'd give up Pags alone for Zegras.
Give up a guy I have no intention of signing for Zegras? Where do I sign up?

For those who follow the Canucks, how secure is Rick Tocchet’s job? Is he on the hot seat?

Come on Beach. That can't be real. Pageau is basically a nothing at this point of his career. I'd take a 2nd for him right now, but you wouldn't swap him for a forward with 1st line potential and 10 years younger?

I'm no Zegras stan, but if you wouldn't do that deal 1 for 1 then it has to be because you have an axe to grind with Zegras - Not because you're being objective. Because let me tell you...No real NHL GM would trade Zegras for Pageau straight up (and especially no rebuilding team).

Lou has been mumbling in his sleep recently and that sleep sometimes is 11am at the office.

Dobson should never be traded. We finally have dynamic player on the back end who is still just a puppy lets give him a chance to be great here . This influx of waiver poo poo will wear itself out soon enough. It’s already started

Bottom line is that while we have Sorokin we are never going to be bad enough to fully tank, and this year's draft is super top heavy anyway. It kind of makes sense to retain Nelson if the deal is reasonable and just hope for a hot playoff run again one year.

Let's say Lou's plan is to sign Nelson to a deal at his current rate of 6M for 4 years (until he's 37). Sure, some team might offer him 7 for 3 but then he has to potentially move again after, and is also potentially moving again after for another contract to make up that last 3M.

Nothing changes. His salary stays the same, he lives in the same house, his kids can stay in the same schools. They can still go to MN in the summer. Lou can sell him on the potential to get his name in the rafters becoming a top 5 Islander in a few categories, something he won't get anywhere else - and finally, if he feels like it, sticking around the team... whether it's in a Boychuk role or a Hickey role.

As far as we're concerned, he stays our 2C for next season at least, and if they're able to pull off a trade or a signing he can either move down to 3C or become a top 6 winger. With the cap going up, a 6M deal will be worth 4.65M today by the third year. I'd rather trade the dude but it's not... the worst thing I've ever heard.

And then he gives them too much term because that's the only way to fit them under the cap. That's like negotiating your payments at the car dealership instead of the out the door price. This is how you end up with a 72 month loan and a car that's worth less than what your payment balance is.
Excellent analogy

He’s 23 year with two 60 point seasons under his belt. The Islanders leading scorer is Anders Lee who is on pace for 61 points. :help:

So yes, Zegras would in fact be an “Islanders first liner”.

Yes and he is pass first and seems to get hurt every year!!!!
If That Does Not Say "NEW YORK ISLES" I do not know what does!!!!:sarcasm:

Pointing out that so many here crap on parts of Dobson's game yet expect him to be treated by other organizations as an All-Star in trade worth.

Fine, name the consistent ones who aren't top of the league superstars . . . you can only be streaky if you actually produce a lot over the season.
Certainly you don't think Isles fans are the barometer of truth?

I won't be shocked if Dobson is traded, but there's also a big part of me that agrees 100% with your post.

If Dobson comes back healthy by the trade deadline, maybe TDA is the one to be moved for a pick.

It’s crazy seeing people try to rationalize the “trade Dobson and re-sign Nelson” rumors.

…But there were also many who rationalized the Engvall signing. I guess I’ve been on here long enough to realize that no matter what Lou does, a subset here will always find a way to defend it.

The only thing dynamic about Dobson are his defensive gaffes that lead to goals against (and lost points). Those are dynomite!

Dobson is not "dynamic".

Leaf fan here. Just wondering on pure value nothing else.

Would knies + or knies ++ be a somewhat fair basis for a guy like Dobson?.

Eg: knies plus Cowan or knies plus next year's first (don't have one this year) + a spect be something within the ball park value of Dobson?
