In the five games we’ve seen vs. Dobson this year? Nothing.

In Dobson’s last season vs the rest of Tony Deangelo’s career? Everything.

I’m going to need to see TDA keep it up for the rest of the season before thinking of him as a Dobson replacement, especially with his tendency to flame out of organizations. Still, early returns are encouraging.
The big question is how long until TDA punches Soroky in the tunnel?

Yes, Lou surely would like to play out this season with the guys he's got. I do not think he's gonna put himself in a situation where Nelson and Palms simply walk this offseason.

If they're not moved, expect him to keep them in the fold or know exactly where they want to sign and make a deal with that team in the offseason (granted, one only getting 'pennies for the dollar', so to speak).

Common sense would say that you'd be a fool to be outside a playoff spot when the trade deadline arrives and keep any UFA you knew you couldn't or wouldn't be re-signing.

No GM would evvvver do that. Right?

There is no one that can replace Nelson in our system or in free agency. If he signs, I'm ok but I need other guys shipped out. Trade Palms and Pageau then. You can get a Kerfoot or Frederic to replace Pageau until Danny Nelson is ready and he's probably 2 years away.

This is my preference.

The alternatives to resigning Nelson are signing an uglier-than-Nelson-will-get UFA contract or being down a top 6 forward.

And they don't have our Russian Whisperer guy...

Good thing they're not paying Parise and Suter anymore...

Oh wait
I guess buyouts can actually work if you are able to draft and develop younger players and get the occasional talented UFA.

I’ll beat a dead horse here and pile onto Lou’s game plan. It’s OK to misfire on a UFA or when you resign your own player to a bad long term deal but somehow he doesn’t know when to cut bait. The Isles would rather hold onto or trade their underperforming assets by attaching draft picks rather than buy those players out. Both strategies are viable options for most franchises, but Lou is too stubborn to do a buyout and can’t accept defeat.

Maybe that changes with Engvall this offseason? :surrender

Extend Nelson, trade Pageau and Palmieri, sign Marner.

Lee-Horvat-Barzal
Duclair-Nelson-Marner

:naughty:

Selling Brock, Palmieri, and one of Pulock or Mayfield (RD's are more valuable in a trade than LD's) should be items 1, 2, and 3 by the TDL. If you can move Pageau as well to a contender, great. 3/4 of those moves should set the Isles up nicely.

Idk how long Pulock is supposed to be out for but hopefully it's not post TDL. I don't think he is but someone can fact check me on that.
Dobson and Pulock are supposed to start skating during 4 nations. They should be back after the break but key word ‘should’

Chap-

How can you say this? In 2012 Lou was presiding over a (more valuable) pending UFA Zach Parise with the Devils, didn't trade him, and he walked that summer - All the way to Minnesota.

We could almost see the exact same thing take place in 2025.

You can't both, "surely like to play out this season with the guys he's got" and not "put himself in a situtation where Nelson and Palms simply walk this season."

Lou could've signed either of them at any point from July 1, 2024 up until this moment, but here we are in limbo with a track record of a GM not just rarely ever trading a player at the deadline, but also letting players walk in free agency for nothing.

So literally don't know how you're drawing these conclusions when Lou's literal track record suggests he'll do the exact opposite.

We're not dealing with "common sense" here. We're dealing with stubbornness. Thus...See above.

You should prepare yourself for Nelson/Palmieri to still be here on March 8th...And for them to walk this offseason. If anything else happens you can be surprised, but resigning them (into their mid/late 30's) isn't exactly a great move either.

Saw on the Nashville forum (specifically the Fire sale thread on the Trade Forum) that Luke Evangelista seems to be in Brunette's doghouse. He'd be a fine 3rd liner if we are looking towards filling Palms spot on the roster, with Holms stepping up to the 2nd line.

Blocked shot, potential surgery? Sounds like a recurrence of what happened to him in junior…fractured kneecap.
