Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

I'm sure this has been mentioned, but re: VC trading either Miller or Pettersson:

Miller has a full NMC, and Pettersson has zero trade restrictions (now); and

I'm guessing the coach, Tocchet, would rather keep Miller.

Not to mention Pettersson makes $3.6M more per year.

If we traded 13 for 40, 40 would become the new whipping boy. MMW.

Barzal is incredibly good. Isles fans want him to be better. Ep40 is the same in Vancouver. They are both players on the cusp of looking like they are elite, but are not. One is getting paid more to be that way. No thanks.

I think it's more JT being a dickhead bully. Pettersson would fit in nicely on the Isles.
Probably so but I’ve always said it takes two to tango. Personalities aside one of them has to be the bigger man and maybe Petterson has been that guy. But if they are both unwilling to make amends they are both part of the problem.

Also TBH if this article accurately describes Miller, I would rather have him over a passive aggressive EP anytime. This guys got a winning character. Don Cherry had some choice words for EP telling him to put up or shut up.

This team needs a JT Miller. He would be a good acquisition. EP would just be adding another boy scout to the team.

NY Times on Miller

The only thing here is that EP40 scores goals and he is paid accordingly.

Barzal just doesn't. And no matter how many fancy assists, zone entries or gaudy possession numbers can change that.

Compare the two over the same amount of time 2018-19 through this season. Now, I understand this removes Barzal's best statistical Calder season of 22g-63a-85p.

So it's not like EP40 gets paid a bunch more than Barzal for no damn reason. Basically the same amount of assists and 70 more goals is a pretty big disparity, even considering their respective linemates and systems.

I'm in the camp that would love to see them on a line together in Blue & Orange at the expense of Dobson+ vs. Barzal+

Re: Emily Kaplan's comment about selling, Lou ain't "selling". The team is 23rd overall right now, but 5 points from 13th overall (with game/s in hand on some teams above them). And there are 21 games left in the season after the trade deadline. He might "trade", but he's not going to "sell" contributors for futures. Color me shocked if he does, anyway.

The way this group is playing presents us with, in my opinion, a glorious opportunity to make moves both for the future and to still go for it now.
#1 - Me personally, I would like to keep Nelson if we would take a reasonable extension on lets say a 3 year deal. But Lou should go to him and ask him will you resign and if he will not, then you might have to trade him regardless of where we are in the standings.
#2- I like Palmieri but him I would be willing to trade. He really is not producing much the last 20 games or so. But I would not just give him away. If we are not getting a first or a second with a decent prospects, then if we are still in a playoff race then just keep him.
#3 - I would look to see what we can get for Dobson and Mayfield. Most may think I am crazy, but I actually think if DeAngelo keeps his head on straight (which I understand is a big IF), I actually believe he is an upgrade on Dobson for about 1/3 of the price. DeAngelo plays faster and with more energy, while Dobson has such a lax approach to the game and looks lost or stoned half the time.
If we could trade Dobson in a package for Pettersson or another legit top line winger around that age we should do it.
#4 - If you could get anything reasonable for Cizikas, do it.
#5 - If Pulock is not a long-term injury, I see if you can get anything decent for Pelech but if Pulock is out for the season probably have to hang on to Pelech.

Then go forward and build this team around:
Horvat, Barzal, Pettersson (if you acquire him or someone like him) Holmstrom, Tsyplakov, Nelson (if he re-signs), Duclair, Lee and Pageau (for now)
Romanov, Pulock, DeAngelo, Perunovich
Sorokin and possibly Hogberg

Absolutely. I no longer believe Dobson will be the answer as a #1 dman. Honestly I think Romanov is already better than him all around. You do not trade Barzy for Pettersson as I see that as a lateral move just for the sake of making a change. If you could trade him for McDavid or MacKinnon, then of course. But if you are trading for Pettersson it should be to put him on a line WITH Barzal and Horvat. I would definitely be open to trading Dobson + for EP.

Sorokin’s stats on this run have been so impressive. I think Hogberg has been a huge part of that, giving Sorokin rest. I am definitely nervous a long run of Sorokin makes him return to his way less impressive form. Hopefully Varly will be back soon, even if he has been down this year too

I don't know if I would want a player who cannot resolve a simple rift between another player on his own team and bring that immaturity to our team. Talented for sure, but the team doesn't need the drama. Players should not be traded because they are acting like babies in the lockerroom. That alone makes Barzal a better player than EP.
Only in your eyes.

You know, in true Islanders fashion this is not gonna end well. The recent upsurge in results will lead to them hanging on to Palms and Nelson, but just missing out on the playoffs. They will either walk for nothing of get signed to horrible deals. Either way, it's a lose-lose situation they are caught in now.
last couple of years it ended with a playoff berth. which is bad, all things considered. but they do have a history of going on a nonsensical run to end the year.

hopefully Lou has a short memory and remembers we’re down so bad right now we’re playing Tony Deangelo on the PK. They were at 90% this month, but 60 in the months before. If they land anywhere in between, we stop winning. I think that’s a pretty good bet

There’s lots of speculation about the rift between EP and Miller, but I don’t think it’s due to EP’s immaturity. I think he’d be completely fine in the Isles room, especially with Horvat here who he’s gotten on well with in the past. Miller, on the other hand, might be a bit disruptive to the room.
I feel like Miller and Barzal will get along just fine. I don’t mind the room getting a jolt, it definitely felt like they could have used one for the first 35 games of the year.

It would be hilarious though given Lou’s reputation if he added Tony D and JT Miller in the same season. Must finish 8th in the conference at all costs!

I'm not alone.

"Nobody would want him - the third highest (paid player in the league) and (only) one good year. ... You never get back what you give away," Don Cherry said. "He should go to Buffalo. I’d just tell them to send him home. That's the only way you can (solve this), send him home." - Don Cherry yesterday on Elias Pettersen

Does Don Cherry have a contact in the VAN organization or in the locker room? He's one of the earliest known hot-takers and is now 90 years old.

I don't give 2 shits what that guy has to say.

He has a similar mindset as Lou and we've all soured on that too.

Sorokin's less impressive form was a result of the a basketball defensive scheme and his own players blocking his line of sight accompanied by relentless shot after shot demanded by a system designed to retreat rather than advance. This nearly destroyed Sorokin's confidence to it's foundation. Roy has solved this problem. He should be fine from here on out.

The only reaction or response necessary for quoting Don f***ing Cherry is

No one has respect for the elders and their wisdom anymore. That's what's wrong with this world. Where is the respect? Where? Where? Where?

Regardless there's no way I would take EP over Barzal. Barzal more than holds his own with far less talented players and in a far more defensive minded system for most of his career.

EP is way overpaid and Barzal is a relative bargain compared to this guy. He produces similar numbers as Barzal who was playing in a more challenging environment. 92 million at 11.6 a year is ridiculous and I totally agree with Cherry. 3rd highest paid player in the league and what exactly has he done?

We're talking about the same guy who got all butt hurt about a team celebrating in a silly way a...."bunch of jerks"

He says shit just to stir the pot. No different than Stephen A. Smith, Rex Ryan, Colin Cowherd, etc. bunch of blowhards striving for attention.

Ok I don't see this at all. We're not comparing apples to apples. What type of system were they playing under a defensive minded system or an offensive minded system. What were their linemates like?

Taking a typical season and removing any outlier whether good or bad I could make the argument (non-scientifically) that EP is a 66 point player while Barzal is an 80 point player on average and that's not including the fact that one of these players played under a system designed to score goals and the other played under a system designed to prevent them. If we take out the years when Barzal was inexplicably leashed he's a much more dominant player then EP ever was and he comes at a bargain.

I can't fathom what moron signed this player to an 8 year 92 million dollar contract with bonuses. This guy has go to be the most overpaid player in the league and maybe that explains the rift especially when you have someone as outspoken as JT Miller.

I love Don Cherry but using him as a reference for avoiding a European player is cheap.

Face it. Unless a guy comes off the farm in Alberta Cherry isn’t going to like him

Yeah I know. I remember how the guy dresses. The point being - he has a valid point regardless of the source. The guy averages about 66 points a season except for one (and on an offensively stacked team playing an offensive system) and some idiot signs him for 92 million with bonuses? Why would the Isles want to get anywhere near that contract?
