This is the wrong thought process. James Hagens is from LI. Great, it's a wonderful place to grow up. That is the degree to which we should care. There is only one question when the draft comes and it should have nothing to do with where someone is from and that question is; is he the best player available?So what you're saying is we need the lotto balls to place us in at least the top 4?
If they are in position to do it, it would a perfectly Islander thing to do to choose Hagens over a potentially better player and better fit simply because he is from LI. And will it matter anyway since whoever we draft will probably spend some time in the black hole that is Bridgeport and never be heard from again.

All of the comments and speculation here means nothing because of the guy running the show. Without a doubt this team needs a shakeup, but all of the picks and trades aren't going to mean s**t with Lou and his nepotism being allowed to continue. We own the worst special teams in the league - due to 2 former NJD coaches who Roy cannot get rid of. Bridgeport is in the crapper due to Lou Jr there and a complete lack of development. So...best case scenario is for Malkin/Ledecky making a change at the top during the two week break, or all of the potential to retool is going right down the sh***er with Lou making the deals. Also, have heard several of the talking head scouts comment that this is the weakest draft class in a decade so lets not get too excited about potential returns.
Sucks the season is over this early but this delusion from the front office they are “playoff contenders” is hopefully over and a new fresh set of eyes will run this team soon. It’s been a good ride but time to let it go now

0-2 to start a crucial 7-game home stretch and against teams ahead of them in the standings is brutal. Hate rooting for this team to lose but at this point going 2-5 on this home stretch or maybe even losing Saturday to San Jose would certainly cement their fate.
I think MGMT already knows what needs to happen.
I hope Nelson is traded before the February break or the sooner the better - the direction this team is going.

Hagens is the top player in this draft.
He is also 5'11 178, which isn't a smurf by any means, especially when he plays the game as fast as he does. And the question of whether or not he can stick at C is very silly. A kid who can skate and transport the puck like he can with the vision he has - you give him all the ice.
The other 3 options - 2 are playing shinny in the OHL racking up points and the other is injured.
If the Isles have an opportunity to draft this kid - they should do it without ?

I've been watching Hagens play since he was 13, I trust my gut here.
Yep, if you have a shot at Hagens, you take him.
He's another Jack Hughes. Sure, there are a couple of other goodins in that top 5, and they could be a bit better, but you just do not skip out on a talent of this nature with the connections he has to this Island and the NY Islanders. Doesn't matter if he ends up "only" being a Logan Cooley or so.
It's a dream scenario that would mean the world to this franchise - which still has a big, shiny building that will long depend on having fannies in the seats!

Besides... Seeing the efforts of some of these guys out there, it seems like they've already embraced #DogginForHagens.

The good news on the seller front is that if you look at the Western Conference standings, you'll see no less than 5 teams that pretty much need a Nelson more than anything else. He'd be like the fit of all fits for those teams.
A couple of them could even use Palmieri as well.
Wonder what that duo could get you?
Alone when I look at Dallas and assume that no-one is selling the farm, I can imagine that duo getting you a 1st, a future 2nd, Bourque/Hemming, Bäck/Hryckowian, and Minnetian.

Ya, I see a team willing to get bullied losing at home. Man, #7 seemed ok being treated that way all game,. Matt Martin or no one was sticking up for him too. The optics were not good. I'm sure torts was laughing inside how soft we were. Not sure what to tell you guys, were all smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall. Gonna be rough rest of the way here. Lgi, it's about the crest. Need some hungry hungry new blood as soon as this year and def next year.
Center/Wing, whatever. Play him on a line with another C/W and you're good.
Yeah, I get it. He's not as explosive as Hughes, and not as big as you'd like him to be. But players like Hischier, Cooley, Hughes, and Marner are star players, and Hagens is some kind of fusion of these players. If I were to peg his play, he looks like a left Giroux offensively, while looking like Hischier defensively or in the neutral zone. Not all players play to contact nor should they, but if they don't they should know how to avoid it. Barring injury (always a possibility) imo he has zero bust potential.
Schaefer is arguably better. Would have been great if he weren't injured in the WJC, and we'd have gotten to see him in elimination play. I wouldn't personally consider anyone else. Cognitive speed matters, which is obvious watching the Islanders these days.

Yeah as a fan I always want to believe but it may be time to concede the season is over. Lou must go. There is absolutely no excuse for this franchise to continue with him at the helm and the owners have to take charge of the situation. He believed in this roster far too long even when the previous GM was making the hard decisions for example letting Martin go, this guy brings him back. We all love the guy. He’s been a great warrior but every athlete has an expiration date. Perhaps he can help this organization in another fashion but Martin is just an example of Lou living in the past.
At this point just let them play the season out hopefully putting the team in a tanked position and land a high draft pick. Improving the team now makes no sense. Just trade for picks at this point.

This is not the year to trade for picks, it's the year to trade for prospects. Trading for picks means more time to develop; let's go after those who are D+2/3.

Oh, I was more referring to the fact that there are some scouts that actually have him at #4, meaning there are 3 other high impact draft prospects. Being in the top 4 would assure one of those 4, if it is Hagens, great because it will be a fantastic story and a funny mirror to JT.
Even the worst team in the NHL is at the mercy of the lotto balls, so you really need to be hoping you are in that group of upper echelon prospects. Sounds like the 2025 draft is a top 4 and then a drop off (I'm only regurgitating what I've read as I'm not a prospect guy) so I would love to use some Jedi mind tricks to make the NYI ball show up as at least #4.
Of course, if we are #1 and the NY scouts decide if he is not the guy to take, I do not want him at 1OA. Taking the LI kid just because he's a LI kid would be a Wang-type move to sell some tickets.

Hagens is not the top guy in this class, I think Schaefer has really emerged as the top candidate to go 1st overall. Personally, I don't put Misa or Martone on Hagens level because for me he's the clear #2, but others do. So maybe Hagens isn't even the 1st forward off the board, who knows. I don't see him as anything other than a C in the NHL, though. His game is built for it and he can shore up his faceoff skills over time, like every young C ends up having to do. I also don't think he's on Jack Hughes' level.
That said, there are players ranked where the Isles would pick if the season ended today, like Desnoyers, for example, that have loads of potential. So even if we're not in the position to worry about who is #1 or #2, I think the Isles will still have the opportunity to snag a high end prospect.
I would be ecstatic if they ended up with Caleb Desnoyers and I think he has #1 C potential and would be a great fit for Eiserman to ride shotgun with. He can do it all and is a high IQ player.

McQueen is still injured but will be back in a couple of weeks and could make a push for #1 as well.
Top 5 feels pretty safe, but with the impending loss of both Nelson and Pageau and really only one C prospect I would hope that would be their aim.

But yeah 3C would be a gaping hole minus Nelson and JGP because at this point Casey can't plug it. Too many hard miles.
