I think you'll find that GMs have less of an appetite for the extra year on aging players. Less flexibility in terms of cap space and roster spots. You don't know what you're going to get out of Anders Lee on the final year of this big deal, I think we're all fairly surprised that he's been this good this year and I would have expected that he'd be a replacement level player at best by this point. Pageau's time here has been a mixed bag due to injuries, but when he's healthy he's still decent.The more games I watch the more I have to be thinking if you’re a GM out there you’d rather have Lee or Pageau over Nelson or Palmieri.
Look at Nelson. Is his slowdown just a bad spell or the age cliff? Is he just checked out until he gets traded? It's not clear but that's the sort of thing you have to worry about when you're trading players in their mid 30s.
If you can get a decent return out of either of them? Sure. I just don't know how likely that is. If I'm on the other side of that trade I'd be somewhat uneasy about the extra year.
