I think you'll find that GMs have less of an appetite for the extra year on aging players. Less flexibility in terms of cap space and roster spots. You don't know what you're going to get out of Anders Lee on the final year of this big deal, I think we're all fairly surprised that he's been this good this year and I would have expected that he'd be a replacement level player at best by this point. Pageau's time here has been a mixed bag due to injuries, but when he's healthy he's still decent.

Look at Nelson. Is his slowdown just a bad spell or the age cliff? Is he just checked out until he gets traded? It's not clear but that's the sort of thing you have to worry about when you're trading players in their mid 30s.

If you can get a decent return out of either of them? Sure. I just don't know how likely that is. If I'm on the other side of that trade I'd be somewhat uneasy about the extra year.

I think more like top 3 between Hagens, Schaefer, and Martone with Misa and McQueen after. Schaefer just got injured though and Hagens has been tearing up the WJC - he could end up back as the consensus #1 in no time.

I think we would be very happy with any one of the top 5. Don’t see us going for Schaefer because he’s an LHD and that’s basically all we have in the pipeline. I think there’s a good chance McQueen falls because of his injury - he was once considered top3 in the class but I bet someone snags him at 7 or 8. Could be us!

No coach can save a team if the players are not motivated. I haven't watched the past 2 games but it's starting to look like the team is simply not trying and by that I mean some of their purported "best" players. Horvat, Nelson, Barzal, etc... It's almost like they are playing to get someone in mgmt (coach, GM) fired. If it's Lou that they want gone then fine because to me that would make sense. If it's Roy then I think that's mutiny and the team deserves to be chopped to bits. Roy was the only coach to hold this roster to a standard that has been missing for years. He's actually holding the players accountable moving them away from the country club mentality. Maybe some players are disturbed by the way he treated Engvall and they were just singling him out. Truth of the matter is he is absolutely the kind of player that is hurting this team- overpaid- not pulling his weight and NOT willing to sacrifice the boy at all. It may be neither of these scenarios and the team's confidence is at an all time low from all the losing to start the injury laden season.

As for the special teams. This team's special teams have sucked for 6 years particularly the power play. The team never practiced the power play because the only instruction they got was when you have the puck you do what you do when we have the puck you do what I want you to do. Offense was not considered a priority for years and an effective power play was not developed all those years. So after 6 years do you really expect these guys to have figured this out? Yes Roy should have emphasized special teams but I think he was fundamentally trying to change the Isles approach to the game with a more uptempo aggressive modern system. This change is absolutely necessary but Lamiorello stocked the roster with grinders more suited towards the obsolete system advocated by his immediate predecessors. Roy is trying to make a race horse out of a carriage horse. What the heck is the guy supposed to do? Also aren't special teams usually assigned to the assistant coaches these days?

As for the losing streak, if this is the best we can get from the current roster then so be it. Tank for the rest of the season to get the highest draft pick available and if any trades are made for a number of our aging "talented" vets I agree with the many here that they should be for high draft picks + prospects. I would not trade these players for younger serviceable but otherwise unremarkable NHL players.

The goal at this point should not be for mediocrity but to suck really bad and retool the team. Do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Keep Roy and force Lou to resign.

I think the potential extra 9 million next year might change the landscape

VAN receives: Noah Dobson ($4M), Casey Cizikas ($2.5M), 2025 first-round pick, Pierre Engvall ($3M)

It would need some lottery protection for me to include the 25' 1st (e.g. Top 3 protected, otherwise 26'). unless we're able to obtain a 2nd 1st rounder from another deal.

Also mentions that Van likes prospect Danny Nelson, Simon Holmstrom and Brock Nelson (if extended).

Kinda hate it. Creating a hole on D (even with as bad as Dobson has been this year) to add another expensive center as well as again rob from the future prospect pool seems foolish. Unless this is combined with multiple moves that completely reshape the team, I don't think this makes us appreciably better. I also get vibes that Pettersson would welcome our country club atmosphere and I don't think that's particularly productive either.

This team is flailing about with Lou at the helm. They need a GM who will not only build an appropriate roster but get rid of the control freak rules such as head and facial hair length and choice of uniform numbers. What the heck does that have to do with hockey other than to show that you are puppets in his puppet show? There has to be a major culture shakeup in this organization and it starts at the front office. I can't see any situation where Roy could do a worse job than Lou at building this team. I know he doesn't want the job but I bet he'd be pretty damn good at it. Roy's like the Roman General who throughout his career led successful conquests throughout out the entire empire and proved himself on the battle field only to answer to a fool for a Caesar. It's time he took full control over this circus.
 
If this rosner report is real I think you make the Dobson + both Nelsons trade. Danny Nelson’s stock seems to be way up because of the tournament, but he’s really been just ok in college. Some of the kids he’s playing against are three years younger than him.

Dobson, Danny Nelson or Holmstrom and a 1st for Petey

Palmieri/Lee/JGP for whatever picks we could get

Puts us in a way better position going into the offseason and re tooling this roster for next year and years to come

I don't understand how that article suggests trading Barzal for Pettersson creates a hole, but then proposes Dobson instead. How does that not create a another hole? Not that Dobson is good defensively, but that leaves us with no top pair level or even potential top pair level defensemen in the organization.

I don't think Pettersson fixed the problems with this organization. A retool/rebuild is what's needed. There are too many holes to fill.

Almost anything would have been exciting coming off of wang's 20 year ownership embarrassment. To land the greatest coach of the past 20 years was beyond expectations - And that's why the team exceeded expectations for a few seasons.

Don’t get me wrong - I’m still following along, you know me - I’m complain and feign my disinterest but I’m still watching.

But, I lurk here, I haven’t been very active on Twitter/X - I have lots of adult stuff taking up all the hockey time in my life these days LOL

Not to mention - the cost to attend games, the travel time to and from - all limit what I do in person these days.

It’s a lot when things aren’t strong on the ice.

I still bleed blue and orange. Always.

I think that's the tentative number. I wouldn't have a link because it's a podcast but Friedman mentions the cap could jump to 97 because of the growth and the players paying back their money they owe.

My 2 cents. This team is last in the Metro and too many variables have to line up and too many teams to leap frog. Put Barzal back with Horvat and Duclair and let it ride. Do the same with Dobson and Romanov. Put me in the camp of not trading Dobson as I believe he will bounce back and they both may not break the bank with their next contract. I am not a fan of Lou but maybe he signs them to value.

Sell off the UFA's possibly sooner or later and be willing to retain salary if needed. Time to move off from Cizikas and perhaps JGP. I like Pageau and appreciate what he does. Is he still a center? I believe he has some value around the league.

What's up with Varly? I was disappointed that the Avs traded for Blackwood. I thought that would have been an agreeable landing place for him. I was not crazy about his term and not sure what other team we were competing with for a four year contract. Roy is gonna burn out Sorokin.

Pulock has looked solid but I wish I could say the same for Pelech. Pelech has several years left on his deal and it feels like he is morphing into more of 5-6 d man.

Any news on George? Looks like Cholo may draw in which isn't terrible.

The NHL and NHLPA are working towards finalizing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) by the Stanley Cup Finals—one year before the current agreement expires. With league revenues projected at $6.6 billion in Hockey-Related Revenue (HRR) this season, the NHL is thriving financially and has never been healthier.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the players and league negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate a return to play. This agreement included a clause limiting annual salary cap increases to no more than 5% of the upper limit, which explains the $4.4 million cap increase this season.

In late 2023, discussions emerged suggesting the league and players might negotiate a higher salary cap for the upcoming season, acknowledging the possibility of a significant jump in 2026 with the new CBA. This optimism stems from the NHL’s robust financial health and projected revenue growth.
