Am I allowed to say “Sell more than one thing (not everything) with value.”?

Improving this team need to come from a combination of maturing skilled draft picks (gonna be a while), veteran play getting to the next level (good luck with that) or signing talented UFAs (see my last comment).

If that’s the circumstances we’re in, selling valuable assets is the sensible thing to do. Demean the approach with a retool or rebuild reference all you want. The current approach has been unwavering for several years and it’s gotten this franchise nowhere.

To be clear, I’m not advocating that this happens right now. These players deserve a chance to show something as we approach the TDL. In the absence of a remarkable turnaround, my comments stand.

The islanders deadline should have Dobson, Nelson, Palmieri, Varlamov, and lets just say Pageau and Lee. If we want to really make the team better, lets start by fixing up the holes that have been emerging. Nelson is getting older and he may not score at such a clip again. Dobson looks worse and worse and he really has shot himself in the foot over the past 6 months after the stadium series, and Palmieri is still good but not viable long term.

Barzal is off limits unless you get maximum value back. No exceptions. This team has bigger holes emerging and even IF they do go on a run, the time is now to start creating a new foundation.

But what happens if guys like Nelson and Palmieri, playing for a team that we know already has no shot at a Cup, get injured at any point between now and the trade deadline, can’t be dealt to help the organization, and then walk for nothing next offseason.

Tavares should’ve been traded the moment he refused to sign July 1st and Nelson, Palmieri, and anyone else with any value who won’t be around when this team is a contender again should be dealt the moment there is a great offer on the table for them.

ownership didnt want to trade Tavares. I get why but Tavares would've given you a good fair amount of picks and prospects. yeah yeah i've said they're lottery tickets, but a lottery ticket is better than nothing

For the very reason, Horvat does not upset the entire ice when he is on it. He can play with a majority of players.

Barzal, well, can’t and people keep making excuses for it. If he played like the Dougie weight version, you would hear less noise about him, but he’s completely changed his game into some stat-nerd version of ‘possession’ and ‘zone entries’ trying to be a YouTube star. Play and simpler game, shoot the damn puck, use your teammates effectively, and things will be better. However, HE does not want to do that.

The team beat buffalo without him, yet lost to the same crap bin of Anaheim and Columbus with him. That’s telling.

We are all on the same page here.

Although I didn’t name names, the only veterans I would definitely keep on this team are Sorokin, Horvat and Barzal.

As for trading Nelson, Palmieri and some of the others, I’ll say this. I posted more than once in the off-season that I would have traded both Nelson and Palmieri before the current season started. I’ll take a leap of faith and say that even if Lou had considered a move like that, maybe there were only lowball offers forthcoming.

Would I trade Nelson and/or Palmieri right now? Absolutely, but ideally to get the most value back, the other team needs to get more desperate based on their position in the standings and perhaps injuries on their squad. It’s a calculated gamble on our part that these guys don’t get injured. Despite that risk, it makes sense to hold onto them for the time being.

Well then ownership f***ed up big time.

The package of picks/prospects the Isles could’ve gotten for trading Tavares could’ve then been flipped for vet players who could’ve put this team over the top vs the Lighting - and won this team a Cup (or two).

People need to both stop falling in love with players and/or being afraid of change. At all times any organization should be trying to maximize the assets they have to maximize chances at a Cup. If you don’t want your favorite hockey team continue towards this embarrassing state of affairs or worse then change is necessary.

For the present team that means trading both Nelson and Palmieri before the deadline as gumming up the cap with long deals when we’re this far from Cup or letting them walk for nothing both make zero sense. Time to reset this roster with some talented youth and start leveraging the cap as opposed to having tot trade assets to get out from under cap hell.
