Malkin is not dumping Lou - he brought him in for stability.

Ha. Good one.

"Hi Mr. Malkin. It's Lou. Just wanted to check in. I know you wanted stability when you hired me, so thought I would point out that under my watch the team is getting consistently worse. Based on that level of stability I was wondering if we could talk about a contract extension..."

Now Barzal out. Maybe this is what they need. A complete collapse. Might spur ownership into change. Very little in the system that can help…

I agree with your theory, but concerned that Malkin will be like, "Well Barzal was out - Of course we couldn't expect to be good. Let's give Lou at least another year."

This team stinks (and is light years from a Cup) when all their "best" players are playing. I hope Malkin knows this, because some fans don't.

Could very well happen…Lou is more of a politician than a GM. He will spin it to his advantage.

Bc him in the lineup was propping things up? Yeah, no.
He’s pretty instrumental to the teams success. If they want to get going he is a big piece. Taking Barzal out and adding Fasching or Martin doesn’t help the situation. Worlds a weird place though..:who knows.

The funny thing is that the final roster was supposed to show a bit of accountability with the likes of Engvall and Fasching demoted, only to have them back on the team within two weeks, and with no improvement at all. One step forward and one step back. It's Islanders hockey guys.

A very annoying poster just got his wish, so I hope the team suffers more

"9M figure skater" my ass when the team has become softer than baby cakes.

reminder Lamoriello could've absolutely made changes to this roster yet we got too loyal to these players who haven't produced since 2021.

Say what you want about Barzal but this team’s ceiling is far lower without him than with him.

Does that mean our near term performance will stay in the lottery bound range? Surely not. The analogy to Tavares’ departure is not lost on me.

Other players will need to step up and not defer to our top line players as they have before. That might be a good thing in the short term and could lead to benefits when he returns.

Despite any change in our record, no matter how you dice it this team is not built to go deep in the playoffs, with or without #13.

this is not a good team even when Barzal is here. the isles are just a complete mess when it comes to their roster this season. I really hate to say it but only the 2nd line has produced consistently. Islanders badly need a better bottom 6, and they need to actually fix their defensive core's speed. Mike Reilly's injury also sucks. Dude may never play in the NHL again with how messed up concussions are.

Shit I'll say it. The team moved the puck better on the PP without Barzal and Horvat looked better without him as well. It is only one game but I feel the need to say that.
doesnt give the excuse of keeping MacLean as the PP coach. Barzal makes it more dynamic. They need him to shoot way more

I don't really care for MacLean either. That being said Barzal needs to take more accountability too for his play on the PP (and for 5 on 5) this season. He holds onto the puck too long, gets stagnant, and does not set anything up for all his skating. This team is better when he is on the ice but he has gotten off to a terrible start.

I have been hard on Pageau the last couple of years but what a season for the guy. Last night was his best game in a very long time.

Well, the real problem is that valid, sane, rational criticism, of which there is plenty to be had, is lost in the sea of mindless emotional static like, "sell everything with value" and "Snow was a good GM."

That's how people roll, though.
Thank you guys for setting us all straight.

team doesnt shoot because they have the worst power play coach known to man. even 5v5 he does it but we know damn well Barzal can just rip it. Stupid argument.

Am I allowed to say “Sell more than one thing (not everything) with value.”?

Improving this team need to come from a combination of maturing skilled draft picks (gonna be a while), veteran play getting to the next level (good luck with that) or signing talented UFAs (see my last comment).

If that’s the circumstances we’re in, selling valuable assets is the sensible thing to do. Demean the approach with a retool or rebuild reference all you want. The current approach has been unwavering for several years and it’s gotten this franchise nowhere.

To be clear, I’m not advocating that this happens right now. These players deserve a chance to show something as we approach the TDL. In the absence of a remarkable turnaround, my comments stand.
