Chances are that Engvall will surely find his groove here and there in the course of a longggg season.

The preseason is always a sort of stressful playtime for the coaching staff. You get to look at some new stuff, be disappointed with some stuff you already know.

But when things get serious, you're very likely gonna be investing in whatever the plan was from management in the offseason until further notice.

One thing, assuming Engvall / Casey / Maclean does turn out to be the 4th line . . . if they combine for 35 goals and the PK gets back to mid-pack, that's definitely a TEAM improvement of both production and goal reduction.

OK - looking a bit deeper I do wonder if Lou could move Engvall to Columbus- still unlikely- Waddell is looking for a trade to bolster the roster-

Hell, Lou could move both Engvall and Wahlstrom

Lou traded for Engvall and they signed him to a long term deal. He was effective in his role last season 74gp 10g 18a with a career low shooting percentage of 7.8% (career avg 10.9%).

He was also one of the better playoff performers this team has had against CAR in the last two series.

There is no way Lou jettisons him because of a lackluster preseason.

Don’t worry there’s only like 6 more years of this to go.

If moved, it won't be because of a lackluster preseason, it will be because Roy doesn't feel he's a good fit for the system/style of play he is looking for.

Columbus has 2 4th's and 2 7th's in 2025. Some room to acquire picks

Maybe Engvall and Wally for a 4th and a 7th would be enticing enough

FWIW, the problem with guys like Chowlowski, Gauthier, Foudy, etc., is that they've done fine against minor league players but not so much against NHLers, and in preseason they're playing against mostly minor league players. So you can extrapolate to some extent, but with Tsyplakov another question mark I'm not so sure I see Lou jettisoning an NHL player for one of them.

It’s all feel good stories that the Isles found some undiscovered or late breaking talent.

Gauthier and Chow are on their 4th NHL teams. Foudy is on his 3rd.

They are getting all these ‘extra’ chances because they are former 1st rounders. These guys at 24/25/26 are tweeners and injury depth at this point.

They could also be Wally Waivers protection.

There's no way Lou jettisons Engvall because no other team will take that contract without notable draft pick compensation going the other way.

Also given how total shite the team mostly played again Carolina the last two postseasons, a "better playoff performer" doesn't mean much. Engvall is soft, mostly useless, and you could get most of what he is from an AHL call up. No reason for that guy to be making what he is for as long as he is when that cap space could be put on more impactful players.

Wally should be looking in the mirror.

They’re the ghosts of Christmas yet to come for him.

I want to see Roy flip Tsyplakov and Duclair once to see what happens. Tsyplakov can find Barzal with crazy lanes based on what I’ve been seeing in camp so far. Duclair would compliment Nelson solidly as well.
I would agree, except that in the limited viewings we’ve gotten of Duclair on the top line they’ve been pulling off some high danger tic tac toe type shit that probably goes away without someone fast enough to keep up with Barzy. If the Nelson line doesn’t have any issues entering the zone without Engvall carrying it in then I think we’re good on the lines

Engvall has a 16 team NTC. Even if Lou actually wants to trade him there a good chance Columbus is on it

More so to see it as an option. Brock and Kyle play a much more simple game compared to Barzal so it might work out with the crazy passes. Just anything but the blind Vanek drop pass.

Engvall will be waived.
Possible very possible...

And to go a step further - does Waddell and the Blue Jackets claim him?
He is on record saying he wants to add - possibly via trade or waiver wire.
They need NHL forwards - 11 with Danforth now on IR and their 11th F is Owen Sillinger a career AHLer.

But 5 more seasons after this one?

It's intriguing to me.

No one would claim him and we don’t gain anything by waiving him. We’re going to waive 3 more forwards that aren’t on 6 year deals, and so will every other team - Columbus will have choices.

Gauthier will start in the lineup, and when he f***s up or someone gets injured Engvall will be back in the lineup, hopefully with a fire under his ass

Would love it, but that would be Lou admitting a massive mistake.
Maybe, but i think it more that no one will claim him with that contract. If he is not reasonably going to be on the starting team, it would open another spot for someone who might be claimed if waived....and if he is claimed, well then...no real loss.
