Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

He's so bad. They both kind of are.
Ya but one of them could help address a huge need. We can’t score. Sprong can score. One year deal. Cheap. I have no idea why we wouldn’t take a chance on him. There is really very little risk. Playjng Matt Martin is useless. Engvall waived twice. Like what are we doing here Lou…

Sprong is nothing special, but he has speed, is good 5 on 5 which is all we need him for in a bottom six role, and just scored 16-18 goals in each of the last two seasons. He is infinitely better than Hudson Fasching and Kyle Maclean, both of whom make almost the same salary as him. These are the kinds of moves we should have been making to start changing the core of the team. Get rid of guys like the above 2 and bring in Sprong and Kaliyev. Then try to make trades to improve the upper level skill after that.

The only person more demented and delusional than Lou is Scott Malkin. f*** this team.
I tried to like that post more than once but the new and improved HFBoards wouldn’t let me do it.

If Lou resigns our 2 pending UFAs and/or if he’s still the GM after this season concludes then I’m taking a long break from the Isles.

Don’t cry for me Argentina.

Likely both of you care more about this teams wins and losses than Malkin. Malkin IMO bought the Isles for his real estate play and as an investment. The Isles valuation has increased under Lou. The real estate project is near completion. I doubt the Isles have incurred annual operating losses since the team has made the playoffs more years than not. I seriously doubt Malkin makes any changes at this point.

The only retool this team needs is to rid the team of John Maclean and his miserable power play. If anyone hasn't figured it out by now the only reason he's running it is because of the Devil's uniform he used to wear and the abysmal power play is as much Lou's fault as it is Maclean's.

If you actually look at John Maclean's record

In 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 he ran the Coyotes powerplay to 26th in the league both years.

In 2019-2020 he was brought in to run the Shark's powerplay which in 2018-2019 was ranked a very good 6th in the league. When Maclean took over it nose dived immediately to 23rd in the league that year.

By 2021-2022 he ran the Shark's power play to 31st in the league. So in one year Maclean ran the Shark's power play from 6th in the league to 31st.

In 2021-2022 under Trotz the team had a respectable 12th place ranking in the powerplay. In 2022-2023 John Maclean was brought in to run the Islander's power play and it immediately nosed dived to 30th in the league.

In 2023-2024 with Dobson having a good year the Islander's were at the very least not bottom dwellers but still with a less than average 19th ranked power play.

This year under Maclean's PP coaching the Islanders are ranked last in the league (32nd)

So for every team where John Maclean ran the power play they were ranked 26th, 26th, 23rd, 31st, 30th, 19, and 32nd. Why does this man still have a job? I think we all know why.

And BTW after the Sharks fired MacLean in after 2021-2022 season their power play steadily improved from 31st in the league to where it is today. 2nd in the league. The guy clearly has no idea what he is doing.

It was Lou's decision to keep this guy as Roy's PP coach though he let go of Houda. The cronyism surrounding Lou is sickening. It is inexcusable given his performance with the Yotes and moreso with the Sharks that he brought in John MacClean to run the Isles power play in the first place. There's no accountability or merit here. I ask you given Lou and MacLeans close knit bond, what is Roy supposed to do?

I can only hope that's posturing, but truth is his track record should make us all believe that he believes this team can win a Cup this season.

What a joke. Lou is leading us right back to the snow years when there was no hope. At least snow acknowledged a rebuild was neccessary and guess what...Rebuilding led to most of the players that Trotz took to the semifinals.

How novel.

Now Lou is going to resign Nelson/Palmeiri until their in their late 30's - Both a shell of the fading players they are right now.

How is this GMing that any fan can support? Mind-bending.

The only person more demented and delusional than Lou is Scott Malkin. f*** this team.

Is this just because Lou is still employed, or did something else happen with Malkin?

Two things:

1) Lou is no longer the problem, the owners are.

2) If you are spending your hard earned money at UBS or on gear or in any other way that supports the Islanders organization while this state of affairs exists, you too are part of the problem.
You can still enjoy watching your favorite team, and heaven forbid, even buy Isles gear even when the team is not necessarily moving in the direction you want. You know being a fan is supposed to be fun right? Now, I personally have not bought any Isles gear this season, but I won’t begrudge anyone who buys their kid a jersey with their favorite player on it. Being a long time hard core fan and getting new fans into the Isles is not at all being part of the problem.

From Lou’s comments to a frustratingly out of character win, yesterday felt like a bucket of water thrown over our hopes and dreams of breaking out of the cycle of mediocrity.

LeBrun had stated that his vibe was Nelson would want to test free agency . Couple that with there being no projected cap space to afford Brock at 7 mil next season once Dobber , Romanov , Sippycup , Holmstrom receive extensions I think he moves him .

I think he resigns Palmieri though x 2 years same salary or a tad less (4.5 or 5.0)

100%. You can do whatever you want...And that poster can do whatever he wants.

But make no mistake...If you support any team by wearing their jersey or going to their games, you are tacitly endorsing the job that management and ownership are doing. Not buying any merchandise or tickets as a form of protest might not make any difference in terms of change, but I respect anyone who is willing to take a stand for what they believe in hopes that it might.

You know being a fan is supposed to be fun right?

Again 100%. Being a fan of a team is SUPPOSED to be fun. Are you having fun this year? What about Sabres fans the last decade? What about Jets/Giants fans now?

It's one thing if your team is young and going through growing pains, but headed in the right direction. However we have a dying roster with literally no hope of being a contender unless significant changes are made. And the reason so many of us are frustrated/fed up is because we're being led by a president/GM who has shown literally zero tendencies towards making the moves that would actually help this team get back into Cup contention.

A total rebuild would take years...But Lou is literally wasting years by continuing to kick the can down the road with a team that will have zero chance at a Cup until it receives a serious injection of youth/better talent.

If you're having fun since Trotz was fired god bless - Certainly your right, but many of us want more from our favorite team - And that means better from management and ownership.

Well when you bring kids into the equation that's a whole other story. I have a kid who's turning 7 this weekend and I love nothing more in the world than him. Your child is infinitely more important than any sports team or how they perform. I hope most all of us have perspective on that.

So making your kid happy while he/she just enjoys almost any big any event (a movie, bowling, sporting event, circus, etc) and having the shared experience of being with their dad/mom...Is on a completely different level than an 20+ year old adult wanting their favorite sports team to change a GM so they can ultimately have hope of winning a championship.

So taking kids out of the sports equation...If you're an adult buying any merchandise and/or spending money on tickets just for yourself then once again...You are saying to management/ownership that you support the direction of this team. Again it might only be the tiniest if gestures, but I personally vote with my wallet, and thus in the last decade of his ownership wang didn't see any of my money, and Malkin won't now until he has the smarts/guts to replace the GM with someone who can see what this roster is and make the hard, but necessary, moves to get it back on track.

Because right now to me any fan that is whining that any sort of retool/rebuild is "going to take years" is totally blind to how many years Lou is costing us with each passing move (or non move) he makes. His GMing is burying us into the purgatory of being nowhere near a Cup, up against the cap, but nowhere near being able to draft those game-changing franchise players.

Hope is wonderful...But only when it's warranted. Since Trotz left any fan that thinks we have any chance of winning a Cup is in denial, but calling it hope. There's no hope now until there is change.

All this from the guy who vehemently pointed out that the Isles will go nowhere unless they fired the last GM. Now he gets to bask in all his handiwork. Peripheral, are you not entertained?

If they somehow turn this 2 game winning streak into a 5 game winning streak, that should be enough for a wild card spot. We're so back baby!!!!

Respectfully disagree. It is the only leverage fans have against disinterested and often manipulative owners who think nothing of squeezing every last dime that they can from the faithful. Owners should be as faithful to their fans as those fans are to the team that they own and when they ignore them the fans should return that favor.

Now, before I start getting a flood of responses about how fans shouldn't making decisions for management, I already know that. But this situation goes beyond the nitpicks that fans can be guilty of from game to game or week to week. This is mid team that has zero chance of winning a Cup and is going to remain mid or worse for as far as the eye can see because the GM is living in the past and owners don't care.
