Their PP this year is already pretty inadvisable. I don’t think you could break it any worse.

I'm fickle when it comes to how I want to see our D built out going forward, but as of right now my dream D group in the near/mid/long term is:

Slavin - Dobson
Nikishin - Chatfield
Orlov - Walker/Morrow

Dobson acquired with right hand forward + picks (Stank would be my preferred guy to move but I could be open to moving Nadeau for Dobson), immediately extended 8 years. Orlov kept 4x$5m. Hand Nikishin 8x$6.5m this offseason. Certainly risks here but we could also have a mid/long term D group to gel and develop consistency year in and year out for really quite an overall bargain for the foreseeable future.

Cap hits:
Slavin: 6.4
Dobson: 8 (he could possibly demand more but coming off a pretty rough season)
Nikishin: 6.5
Chatfield: 3
Orlov: 5
Walker: 3.6
Morrow: 1

Total $33.5m, and can easily clear Walker's 3.6. Cap could be as high as 113.5 in a few years and most those guys would be locked up long term. Chatty could get a slight raise after this contract and Morrow will get a raise in a few years but could probably manage a relatively cheap bridge deal too.

He would get more than that as a UFA in a heartbeat. Calvin de Haan who has never even come remotely close to Orlov's level got 4x4.5 from us SEVEN years ago. That Orlov contract would be tied for 73rd highest paid defenseman this season, let alone what it'll look like with the cap going up and more guys getting bigger contracts each year the next 4 years. Takes him to 37 which is not all that old. Considering the guys on ELCs and guys overslotted on terrible teams, it's basically low end 2nd pair $ that'll look like 3rd pair $ within 2 years most likely.

I know people like to rag on Orlov, and yes he has his faults, but the dude is still a great 2nd pair defenseman and was the 1D on a Cup winning team. Pretty much every team in the league would be interested in him this offseason. He wanted to come here though and seems to like it here and could be a mentor to Nikishin for a few years so it wouldn't surprise me at all if we want to keep him and if he wants to stay for a bit of a discount.

Several on Detroit boards suggest Orlov would be a good addition for them. I have no problem if that happens.

They should let us have Larkin in return though

Orlov has had a ton of brain farts this year and will be 34 by the time next season kicks off. One year deal @ a larger cap hit while Nikishin is on his one and only full year of ELC would be ok if he’s replacing Ghost, but really don’t like the idea of that kind of mid term deal.

Honestly, this is a bad time to be selling high priced entertainment of any kind. Fair to expect empty seats around the NHL this spring.
