Roster Building XXVI: Picking Our Teeth Off the Ice

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

HARD NO to anything involving Svech and Rossi

Really? I think it would be an interesting swap of two different philosophical perspectives. Personally, I love players that are a little bit unorthodox, and the Canes have a ton of players that are unorthodox but effective. Rossi would be another push towards that identity, especially because he would occupy a center spot.

Aside from the size argument mentioned above (which is a significant factor by itself), Svech is just a much better player than Rossi, and positional difference does not come anywhere near making up for it. Plus I think Svech's current contract will be a lot better than whatever contract Rossi winds up getting.

Rossi is a fine player, but I don't think it makes any sense to target him in general, let alone include Svech

Love Rossi... let's get him without trading Svech. We would have no LW and Svech brings a lot of unique elements that the forward group seriously lacks. Wish he was more consistent but he's also still just 24 y/o. We have lots of space and lots of assets to go get Rossi without having to make that trade.

Given Svech's injury troubles and his tendency to take penalties (justified or not), I wouldn't rule out putting feelers out there to see what other GMs might offer for him

Trade rumors are circling around Marco Rossi. The Canes have the trade assets to get him and the cap space to hand him an 8 year extension. I wonder if the Wild are interested in Svechnikov, potentially. That front office tends to really covet size, IMO to a fault at times.
Acquiring Rossi absolutely. Using Svech to do it is nuts.

I promise there are top 6 targets we can acquire that can add much needed size to the group. I get that it’s not everything but for all that is holy we already have an unbalanced squad in terms of smaller skill guys, seriously should be looking to bulk up those top two lines.

I wouldn’t consider moving a locked up Svechnikov for an unsigned RFA in Rossi. Moving futures or another (undersized) RFA-to-be + for him, sure.

The only way I think they’d move Svechnikov would be for someone like EP40 or similar type.

Russo's podcast stated the Wild are looking to add scoring.

Clearly they are going to target Carolina Hurricanes.

well, the numbers at least match the "eye test".

I wonder who else they could turn to that could QB PP2 successfully? I suggest Morrow or even Walker but I doubt RBA would play Morrow & Walker is not on the dance card either. Nikishin perhaps but unless he gets here early and practices with the team, I don't think he will even get on the ice in the playoffs.

I mean the only one on the roster who really makes sense is Morrow, and the logical place to play him right now is taking over for a guy that Brindy will never sit, so we're kind of stuck here.

At the same time, the entire PP scheme and structure is so easy to defend that it really doesn't matter who runs it, its going to suck. Station to station passing with very little off puck movement is such a terrible way to run the man advantage, yet that's what we settle into every single year. And there is nobody on staff who is capable of coaching it out of them.

true, but as I've noted several times, the Canes don't have a guy(s) with a shot(s) that puts fear into the opponents PK, let alone an important 5-star PP QB (Ghost is mediocre and as posted earlier, Burns is historically bad, bad, bad this year).

Winnipeg hired a new special teams coach this year and the unit(s) moves wonderfully in the zone. But, they have Connor and Schiefle along with a great PP QB in Morrissey that makes them a very dangerous PP squad and the results shine.

Of course, just having a sniper is not enough because even with Ovie, the Caps are currently 16th in the League at 22.0% (they don't have the other sniper plus maybe Chychrun isn't the ideal PP guy????).

I like Svech, but he has shown us what he is At this point. 25-goal type with not a ton of playmaking finesse, prone to long unproductive stretches, hits but isn’t particularly feared. Every year he seems a little less hungry to fight for that extra inch.

I’m not saying dump him for just anything, but he should absolutely be on the block by now. Frankly, he hasn’t earned job security at $7.75M.

Yeah even my dad has been starting to suggest maybe shipping him around to see what we can snag for him and hes very not online.
