Roster Building XXVI: Picking Our Teeth Off the Ice

Depending on Boston's plans, I'd see if Lindholm was available. I know everybody pans the contract they gave him, but for a 2C in the projected CAP ranges coming up, the contract makes a lot of sense. And he would fit in really well in Rod's system.

IF there is a first round pick being offered to take Lindholm...I'd consider it.

Looks like Marner is going to be a major target for us should he hit FA this summer

In the case we land Marner (unlikely, but let's say it's possible) we 100% have to clear up this log jam on the RW and I think you have to upgrade your 2C... so maaaaybe Stankoven can be a C?

Blake - Aho - Jarvis
Svech - Stankoven - Marner

To me Marner isn't really a player I want to give $13m but there is no doubt he is a very talented player and effective in any situation. It would be like having another Aho but with more offensive creativity.

In the end I don't expect him to leave Toronto. They would have to seriously lowball for him to not come back.

Willy is making $11.5 and he is better than him. AM34 is making $13.25 so you split the difference at $12.5 and call it a day.

Tavares won't be making $11 next year so the money is there.

Yeah, us and like 6-7 other teams

Us and Toronto likely are the top of the list for Marner. Toronto has the 8th year and Carolina has the cap space and an already-existing saga with another top-10 player that acts as a proof of their front office's extreme ambitiousness. There are many contenders out there right now. Out of those teams, only Winnipeg and Carolina have the sort of cap space to really do damage in the UFA market when it comes to the big names, and Winnipeg has a notoriously conservative and less-risk-taking front office. Other contenders, such as the Rangers, will need to deal high-salary contracts to fit Marner.

Also, Winnipeg is Winnipeg. Since Rantanen, we've talked about the appeal of living in Raleigh. Well, at least we don't have extreme cold weather and not too much around to do (from what I've heard) unlike Winnipeg. So, from a free agent's perspective, that's not exactly tough competition for Carolina.

Winnipeg has a relatively bad reputation for players.

Winning tends to cure a lot of ills about location desirability, though. The real problem in Winnipeg is that this is the first year that they really look like actual contenders. They've had winning seasons before, but not nearly to this extent, and they've generally hung around the mediocre-to-pretty-good range for at least a decade.

One interesting thing about Winnipeg is that they've been relatively successful with trade-and-sign transactions. A significant amount of players that they've traded for over the years have gone on to re-sign with them, including one of my favorite former Canes, Nino Niederreiter. - https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/51...eg-jets-nino-niederreiter-contract-extension/

The PP is giving Kotkaniemi’s overall statline a beating. EV, he’s +/- 5 points from Trocheck, Kadri, O’Reilly, Beniers, Hischier and Pettersson amongst others.

None of my proposed lineups have Kotkaniemi out entirely. I have him as a 3C, IMO his ideal position. Also, Ehlers, Duchene, and Forsberg are not particularly small.

A view on Dobson:

From the article:

"The Oilers must keep Connor McDavid’s contract in mind. He’s a free agent after next season and will be the highest-paid player in the NHL. His contract will force the Oilers to work around his contract and Leon Draisaitl’s megadeal that takes effect next season. Extending Bouchard puts them in a tight cap situation and to make matters worse, they don’t have other defensemen to turn to to carry the weight. Mattias Ekholm, the stay-at-home defenseman, is 34, and when his contract is up, he’ll be too old to sign long-term. Otherwise, the team is staring at an older Darnell Nurse, Brett Kulak, and an unknown in Jake Walman (who is a free agent after the season)."

Very interesting point about their cap being tight if they extend Bouchard after McDavid is extended, and then Draisaitl's huge pay bump from his extension kicking in next season. With that in mind, it's quite possible Edmonton doesn't extend Bourchard. If Morrow looks good for a big role increase next season, I'm not sure if Carolina would be interested, but Bourchard, if available, would be one heck of an add on our blue line. He's also only 25 right now (he turns 26 this October).

Personally, I'm in favor of focusing more on getting better top 6 forward talent, and rolling with Morrow and Nikishin in our top 4 defensemen next season. Sign either Marner or Ehlers in the summer, and trade for a centerman for our 2C (since I doubt we'll sign Benett as a free agent as well).

We really only have 1, maybe two, more years to play our games with having a ruthlessly efficient cap structure. More likely, we really only have this summer to really lay some groundwork and make some moves because change is a coming with the massive jump in the salary cap in the next 3 years and beyond…

The salary cap is going up so much that there is no way quite a few teams will be spending to the cap.. a lot of teams are going to willingly take on contract dumps just to make the cap floor. Big spending revenue teams are going to be able to get out of jail free on bad contracts even easier. They might even have teams pay them to take the bad deals if they have high cap hit and low actual cash left to pay…

You are going to see the return of the LTIR retirements but with years to go still on their deals, dumping a contract to be bought out or GMs signing front loaded deals so the back end has less actual money due so they can dump it on a team in a rebuild trying to just make the floor….

There will be less full on rebuilds as teams will have to have a bunch of expensive vets for leadership to help nurse the young guys along to make the cap floor..

Going to be interesting times and curious to see how our brain trust adapts to try to find new inefficiencies and new ways to take advantage of the market….
