Take it with a grain of salt, but apparently we talked to Marner's agent at the deadline. He said Marner isn't interested in signing with Carolina right now, but "check back in the summer"
He's going for the biggest money he can find.

Only chance I see of him coming to Carolina is an Orlov-type short term deal.

Edit: unless Tulsky sees Marner as that perfect fit. I could see Tulsky looking at Morrow, Nikishin, and Nadeau coming in and pushing all-in on exactly the right player. I just think that needs to be a C.

Come on now…even if there is only one team the player wants to sign with, it’s the agent’s job to get other offers to drive up the price.

Like I said, take it with a grain of salt. The feeling I got is that his agent knows the Leafs aren't going to offer the most money. So Marner will have to decide if he wants to take less to stay with the Leafs or more to move to Carolina/Detroit/etc

Yeah, maybe he's going for the most money, maybe he wants very good money but won't want every last dollar if he has a chance to win. Regardless, it makes sense for him to see what's out there and we'll certainly have a competitive bid if he values winning at all.

Marner will want his cake and to eat it too… he will want Leafs to pay above market for him to stay because of the Canadian dollar and taxes compared to some teams.. he will also hold the Leafs over a barrel to have full no move for the entire term…. But I also bet he won’t sign for 8 years so he can double dip like Matthew’s and hit UFA one more time when the cap is higher. Although one could argue the Matthew’s isn’t helping his next deal if this year bleeds over into future seasons and this isn’t purely because he is playing through some injury he isn’t disclosing. Matthew’s signed with the leafs thinking he would be scoring min 50+ per year every year…
