Roster Building XXV: Winning Rantanen's Undying Love

I think it the final contract is around 13.

At that point, someone would need to go to 14.85 to match the total dollar value over 7 years.

I don't think money is the issue here. Put yourself in Rantanen's shoes. He's noticed his offensive struggles here, like the rest of us. He, like the rest of us, assumes he can put up better numbers elsewhere. He's probably not wrong. So it doesn't matter if Carolina can offer an 8th year or the 13 million he wants. Another team can offer a similar amount and he might produce more there, which I'm sure is likely the reason Rantanen hasn't signed.

That would hold water if he wasn't getting chances. He's had them and missed. That's not a team issue, that's not a scheme issue, that's a him issue. Sure there are a ton of things behind it (the trade, 4 nations, locker room illness) but ultimately he has had goals that he alone left on the table. He knows that.

Numbers matter more when you are chasing a contract or you need that for your ego but when you get the $100m offer it sure matters less.

I would think he wants to play on a winning team that will be good for the foreseeable future and that has good comraderie.

Canes check those boxes.

Edit: I’d add Canes were 7th in scoring last year and with all the struggles is still in top ten this year.

Lebrun says as of this morning canes haven’t given any other teams permission to talk extension with Rantanen
If so then we're not serious about trading him. Which I'm completely cool with. Keep him for these playoffs and keep working towards an extension. The more time he's here the more comfortable he can get with sticking around long term. And a somewhat deep playoff run could go a long way too. Despite our struggles lately the East is somewhat wide open and I like our odds in round 1 regardless of potential opponent, and then the Caps in round 2 are no powerhouse. Florida/Tampa/Toronto in the ECF would be tough this year for sure though. Unless we get Nikishin over here and he is an immediate impact like Makar was for the Avs coming out of the NCAA into the playoffs several years ago.

I hope they find a trade for him. Easier said than done, but I’d rather that than watching him for a few more months as a rental.

If the reports are true that is.

This whole circus reminds me a hell of a lot of the vultures circling every year on the 'Canes to QC' rumors. Speculation run completely amok with the media driving their own narratives that becomes a complete distraction to everyone.

It feels so tiring since we already had a better fit with Guentzel who by some reports did want to stay. Now we not only pay more if Rants decides to stay but the chemistry has been nowhere close to as good with Aho. He’s a bit younger sure but not sure how significant that is if the window is now. If he doesn’t, we do this all again - with fewer pieces to offer up.

First aho with the letter to the fans and now Rod puts one out today idk seems like something is happening

lol now that I think about it, that Pagnotta tweet is so bad.

"Mikko Rantanen is open to signing an extension with 'the right team' as part of a sign/trade."
- I mean, wouldn't that be the case with any pending free agent?
"Its one option believed to be available" - Oh, ok so you don't actually know this. You haven't been able to validate this, you're just throwing it out there. Got it.
"Everything seems to be on the table, including the Canes keeping him" - Again, you don't know anything, you're just throwing it out there.

Seriously, there's bad journalism and then there is this. This is straight up First Take levels of throwing shit at a wall to drive a narrative. Its completely shoddy journalism that makes people distrust actual journalists.

Pagnotta is almost always garbage.

Seriously. This one can easily be interpreted to mean that he would sign with any team if they offered him something like $130M over 8 years. well, duh. no team is gonna offer that but Mikko is "open to it."
