Roster Building XXV: Winning Rantanen's Undying Love

Stankoven's struggled a little this year, yeah? Is it a case of running on adrenaline last year or is this year a sort of sophomore slump?

I think you can point to dallas' first half (minus duchene/seguin/marchment) and see a lot of underperforming players. Losing the stability of Robertson - Hintz - Pavelski shook up all the lines, so it took time for players to settle in.

His 2g night recently was an encouraging sign of him getting back up to speed and there's fans that disagree with me that we should move him for Mikko given the circumstances. Is he as, good as Rantanen? Obviously not. But he's a player that would certainly help you win now and you have another year of his ELC. Gives you guys that extra space next year to load up even more.

It’ll be good to not have this hanging over the team. It’s not like his play has been anywhere close to what it was advertised to be. Some of their willingness to now deal him could be reluctance to give him $100M. He may very well turn it around here, but that’s not a bet I’d be willing to make at this point , especially given how non-committal he’s been.

He doesn’t owe the Canes anything and vice versa
Definitely be keeping an eye on any scratches tonight in the late games. LA,Vegas,Toronto, Ducks all play. I think we’ll know for sure by tomorrow before the game no way he dresses if they are moving him

I certainly wouldn't turn down Stankoven. Like you said, he's still on his ELC, and he's still only 22. Plenty of potential there, for sure. I doubt Dallas would offer that for a possible few months of Rantanen though

Yeah the details could be argued endlessly I’m sure. I was more so just curious who you all value just to better understand what a trade could possibly look like.

Appreciate you guys

LeBrun says the Canes have had advanced talks on Gibson but there are stark differences in how the Canes value him with rentention vs how the Ducks value him. Ducks want a 1st, canes laugh…paraphrasing of course:

A little blurb about Rantanen too, seems more likely than not he gone by 3pm on Friday.

A 1st for an oft-injured, 31-year-old goalie is wild. Especially when he's got another couple years left on his deal.

Contracts with length on them are valuable for forwards and defensemen, but goalies are voodoo. Having extra years committed to a goalie before he even plays in your system is how we ended up leashed to Darling

A lot of this is gonna depend on if Rantanen even wants to extend with any of these teams if not the package isn’t gonna be as good

The exaggerations and caterwauling about this is crazy. The Canes only lost one season of team control in that swap, and it was for the potential for a huge upgrade. It was a calculated risk, but we didn't mortgage the future or anything like that, and if the Canes can't sign him, we'll either get other good players at the deadline or a giant amount of cap space this offseason. No harm, no foul.

To me, only a few Rantanen trade scenarios make sense for Carolina:

LAK: Kempe and Clarke
TOR: Marner
DAL: Stankoven and Bichsel
ANA: Terry and Mintyukov
If Rantanen truly doesn't want to sign with us, I would not be upset with your Dallas choice despite Bichsel being a lefty. Would also still try and sign Rantanen in the offseason though

If it happens you can officially mark the Necas+ for Rantanen trade as the second worst trade in franchise history

Do you think it’s a fireable offense? His drafting saves him IMO. I wonder at times if we just shouldn’t avoid certain agents, assuming some have reputations for either deceit or collusion.

I am getting more and more confident that Gibson is who Tulsky was referring to when he said “teams are asking for prices that have only been given up for Vezina winners, and we’re not being offered Vezina winners.”

Fireable? LMFAO...it was one extra season of team control...for a chance at a roster upgrade. No first round pick was even surrendered. We all know that they're going to do a crap-load of trade-downs in the draft to replace the 2nd/3rd/4th that was surrendered anyways. Our team is going to be just fine regardless of if Rantanen signs or not.

period, unless the return is something that we'd be frigin idiots NOT to take (eg Byfield + Clarke)
Yeah, if the Canes had moved Necas for Byfield or Stankoven I think we would have been fine getting a younger player for what was 2 more years of Necas.

In those cases it’s an awkward blip in the franchise. But I wonder if they are really getting a piece that good in return.
