Roster Building XXV: Winning Rantanen's Undying Love

I will give JBB credit: he doesn't let one bad result (Jeannot) mess with his general strategy of viewing picks as essentially junk in their current situation.
Especially when you make more right selections than not. As you know, Canes mostly take the opposite approach looking to maximize picks through inefficiencies but sometimes getting a known high quality (ie Skjei) is a better approach. They hit a HR with Hagel.

I'd add, Tampa is my dark horse favorite to win the Cup....they have stars, are playing great and certainly will be a tough out.

Zach Martin of the Hockey writers proposes the canes should trade Roslovic and Jost to Boston. For Geekie and Tufte

That’s ridiculous.

The point of trading Geekie would be for BOS to gain futures, not UFAs. Whoever wrote that is a moron
Maybe you should read the article first, don’t you think?

i like that proposed trade.

Canes Need some size and bite and although Jost has been good in a bottom role that wouldn’t be a big loss. JR is not a player I expect big things out of in the playoffs.

Btw: I don’t know much about Tufte but his prospect overview said he was a good skater

Having read the article, the author never actually suggests a reason why Boston would do this beyond "well, Boston might extend Roslovic who plays all three forward positions which might be useful?"

That doesn't give a single reason Boston would acquire 2 pending UFAs now beyond "they could sign Roslovic". Roslovic isn't going to be in high demand; they can do that on July 1.

This isn't a well reasoned argument for Boston.

Roslovic is a cheap cap hit and has played pretty well, all things considered. He can get at least a 4th rounder from the deadline market. You can then turn around and make a 4C trade.

Dreger had a somewhat useless tweet that we canvassed the league about Mikko's value with other teams this week. Not surprising we'd do such in this situation. More important is where we stand on our decision to move him or if there were any offers worth considering. Guess we'll see on that. Figured we might hear around todayish if we planned to keep or try to move.

There's no such thing as satire anymore.

Good movie though!

Still don’t think he’s moving obviously they canvassed the league to see if any gm would make a silly offer Dreger likes to hate on Carolina for some reason

As spock mentioned, any reason the Bruins trade Geekie would be to get a pick back or anyone with term. He’s an RFA, and Roslovic + Rost to a team that are sellers leaves them with … nothing.

Also, the author tries to make the argument that Geekie’s faceoff percentage of 46.4% is beneficial to the Canes? I’m assuming you’ve linked to an article from your friend’s amateur blog with such a flawed proposition.

I know I'm just screaming into the wind, but I wish RBA and co. would just accept that that Staal/Marty line should be fourth line grinders and get on with it.

:: Steps off soapbox ::

Again, a weird time to have this discourse when they were responsible for the only goals yesterday.

He matches up that line as a defensive line against opposing team’s top players. And it’s a role that they generally excel at. And they play 3rd line minutes. I don’t see the issue?

unless Rantanen really has a couple spots in mind he would sign a extension by Friday then who is gonna pay a kings ransom and be stuck in the same spot the canes are? LA imo has the pieces and would be a good fit but would need Byfield and more coming back. Also what’s that saying to Aho trading his buddy after only 12 games after he wrote that piece the other day would be a slap in the face

I flip back and forth, but I think at this point, unless there’s a package deal out there that REALLY wows you, you keep him for the playoffs
I’ve pretty much given up on this year, just too many deficiencies in the way the team is currently constructed. Don’t get me wrong though, I’ll still get behind them for the playoff push, etc and would love nothing else than to eat crow after they prove me wrong. I just don’t expect any of that.

After some initial optimism about him re-signing, I now see no way he stays. So, I’d much rather see the team get something, even if it’s just futures, before he walks for nothing after an early playoff exit. And then, have them flip those futures this summer to bolster next year’s roster.

That’s my view at least. I don’t see the point in keeping him with the team as is.
