Roster Building XXV: Winning Rantanen's Undying Love

Quite frankly, if we can't control matchups, I truly think we'd get completely overwhelmed by the likes of Toronto, Florida, Tampa, Washington, and possibly even Columbus if they make it in. I just don't have any confidence in a defense that has to play Burns major minutes, and that's not even mentioning the mess that Orlov has become.
True, but you tend to ride the highs quite high and the lows quite low. I don't think your assessment of the flaws and potential flaws is incorrect. Just that I think some of them might not be as bad as they look right now or at the worst of times. 2C is the only thing you mentioned that I think is pretty unlikely to see improvement on by the playoffs barring that Kuzy type trade that I mentioned and having it hit. But we have dealt with that one before.

Of the teams you mentioned, three of them we probably only see in the conference finals. I think we'd have a perfectly good chance against Toronto. I hate how we typically match up against Tampa, but they aren't big, bad Tampa to me that we can't possibly beat. Just a very good version. Florida, I think we can compete with, but I would have them as a clear favorite. Washington, we'll see. I love what they've done this year and how their team is made up, but I don't see them as unbeatable by any stretch. And Columbus, they're one of those chaotic teams that I agree that we struggle with, but I think we're still pretty easily better than them even with our struggles.

Yeah this is my take. I'm generally against big deadline deals because it's the most costly time to acquire assets. The offseason is generally cheaper and there is more available to shape your team.

I also agree that I think we have a legitimate chance to go far. Did I like our odds better in 2024? Yes. But I nonetheless think Carolina would be favored in most matchups of playoff teams. I think we could beat anyone in our division, and we'd be underdogs against the Panthers, Leafs, and some Western Conference teams.

If there is a worthwhile deal out there, I'm all fine to explore it. I think the Borg's most likely outcome this TDL is that they stay pat and make no moves, or just one minor depth move.

I get it, though those guys would take some currency to acquire. I don't think replacing Jost with Sissons would hugely improve the roster. I'd lean more towards the bargain section at Harris Teeter. I'm picking up the coffee K-cups from Christmas that are marked down 75%.
Canes have a lot of currency. I’m saying they need someone who is better then Jost because if they go with what they have and one of staal or KK go down they have basically no insurance down the middle

One of Toronto Tampa Florida guaranteed to be out first round. I don’t think Washington is just gonna steamroll a wild card team im still hesitant on them. Whoever makes the wild card is gonna be playing playoff hockey down the stretch pretty much to get in I could easily see one of those teams give Washington a series.

Why Pageau when Nelson is available?

Handedness is a major factor - Tulsky has said in the past that the team was looking for right-handed center help. Pageau is a right shot while Nelson is a left shot. On top of that, Pageau has some of the best faceoff numbers in the league and is currently riding at a 59% win rate.

With Boston looking to be selling I honestly would look into a reunion with Geekie. Only comes in at 2m cap hit, RHC (though he's mostly been on the wing in Boston) and already knows the system.

Geekie could work as a quick deadline add but I don't think he'd be much of a help for what Carolina actually needs, which is a guy who will take and win RH faceoffs. Geekie's win percentage there is...not great.

Here's the top-9 faceoff men in the NHL in terms of percentage. Out of these guys, Pageau and Stenlund are the RH guys who could be available at the deadline, and Pageau is a positive defensive player.

This is a likely outcome. I wish we could get another top 6'er with a bigger frame to push Blake down for. now.
I like Blake a lot but I think he's getting too much toi right now.

Svech and Hall looked good with Kotkaniemi and Robinson is a perfect fit for the Staal line.

Jarvis Aho Rantanen
Svech KK Hall
Marty Staal Rob
Blake Jost Rosie

Would be unfortunate to put our leading scorer on the 4th line but I think our roster construction is kind of weird.

Hall & KK were terrific yesterday....I like that pairing. Blake is a conundrum because every game he shows something wonderful offensively and he also playing very responsively defensively.

DEREK RYAN COME ON DOWN!

Not a bad bit of business for Tampa. They certainly don't care about picks with where their window is.

Kraken, certainly good to get picks, Francis is good with the tear down stuff. Just still skeptical how well he can finish the build up. Tough for them to have to hit this type of transaction at this point with the way expections work these days even with expansion teams.

They essentially mortgaged Sergachev in order to pursue Guentzel, so they know that they have to go for it now.
