Roster Building XXV: Winning Rantanen's Undying Love

I still think The Capitals would pay out the most as they are #1 , Orlov and Rantanen for 2 draft pics , at least one first roung in 26 or 27 and 2 of these Leonard , Cristall , Hutson , New Jersey maybe , Mercer , Nemec , Silayev but they might not do anything as Hughes is gone for the year , I dont really like the others top teams prospect and doesnt make sense for non playoff teams or medium playoff teams pay heavy for a rental , If we do trade Rantanen and Orlov , for the love of god trade Burns , give him a chance to win the cup . If we dont trade any and lose Rantanen , we should be looking for a new GM , a real one
I still think with Morrow , Stillman and Nadeau or whoever in AHL replacing Rant , Orlov and Burns we can still win round 1 , retool next year and go hard after UFA's , thats my take.

you didn't take a single breath while typing that, did you?

Trading Orlov and Burns is what sellers do, unless you have some brilliant plan to acquire upgrades for both out of available guys at the deadline, which I would say, "good luck with that". Generally-speaking, a contending roster does best with continuity and stability.

Burns is addition by subtraction at this point.

I've posted about this in the past, but that claim is highly debatable, especially when you look at the analytical data. The Canes have only dropped off a marginal amount as far as their defensive metrics have been concerned post-Skjei/Pesce. Our team defense is still incredibly solid when you look at it as a whole unit.

Any analytical data re: a defenseman attached to Slavin is over ranked. Period.

Burns has sucked this year, particularly since the turn of the year.

I will say that he was good in the Wings game though.

LeBrun says the most likely options are traded to Dallas or stays in Carolina
Naming assets or just a SWAG?

It's not just about Slavin, though he plays a massive role in our success. Our team defense also has a lot to do with how our centers and guys like Martinook play. One reality that needs to be pointed out, too, is that defenders like Burns, Orlov, and Gostisbehere, who are always putting the puck in play and taking shots/making passes, are going to have a ton of turnovers on a regular basis. This is why when we overly rely on the eye test, the turnovers that we see can be misleading when it comes to the overall impact on the game.

Burns is making Slavin look bad , never i been frustrated by Slavin's play , he was great with Deangelo , why isnt he on the PP anymore , Burns stupid shot/pass to the net is known by now by other team wheres the badass slapshot of his , does anyone know if Niki can join us in the playoffs? if thats the case definitly trade Orlov if we can have something good

If we have to trade Rants I’d love to get a RD who can play with Slavin back. Not that I’d expect that to be the return. Just sayin.

Thought about this earlier and I'm sure Leonsis has dreams at the thought of Ovechkin breaking the goal record and winning the Cup in the same year
Exactly , and they have high touted prospects and reason id want 1 st round pick after the 2026 season is i think they wont be a playoff team and maybe tank badly

Rantanen to Dallas for whatever package that looks like.

That Dallas package for Dobson.

Slavin-Dobson for years.

Necas Drury turns into Dobson Hall.

Everyone wins.
Watching him play with young legs like Faber in the tourney was a tease. Clarke from LA doesn’t play the same game as Faber but I’d be curious. Dobson would be great.

Honestly, Walker could do it too. He’s like Orlov in that he signed here to be higher in the lineup than the third pair.

If the Canes want to ease Morrow in on the bottom-pair in his first full NHL season, Slavin-Walker is not a bad idea as a bridge pairing.

Obviously things could change tomorrow but I’d put the odds a lot lower that he’s dealt now after playing tonight. Huge risk playing a guy if you really thought for sure or made up your mind he’s going tomorrow
