Roster Building XXIV: Our Hearts Go Pitter Pattersson

Well, I personally wasn't saying Koch was playing awful or anything. But I do think his inconsistencies are showing a bit more because of the big workload. Like I said, I just think it's beyond the sweet spot. The good news is he'll get the big break in February and we should hopefully get Freddie back to give him a better workload.

I still think they need a center more than they need a goalie. But I am just some yahoo
No, I also think you're right. It's been a long term problem of not having an all around good 2C. We have good defensive centermen after Aho, but they aren't offensive enough to be a good 2C.

Although out of the three of KK, Staal, and Drury, I've thought Drury was the best offensively. He doesn't get enough ice time though IMO. I think he's probably a high end 3C though, and not quite a good 2C (I think better than KK though).

That’s literally every goalie out there. Look at Svech’s goal in the Tampa Bay game. Vasi absolutely shouldn’t have let that one in. Last night against Vancouver, Staal’s goal was a bang-bang goal that looked very similar to a goal that PK got a lot of blame for earlier this year.

Goalies are human. They’re going to let in shots that they definitely should have stopped. But as long as they’re keeping the game close and not actively losing games for the team (ala Darling or Martin earlier this year), that’s all you can ask for. Especially if they’re facing breakaways and oddman rushes.
Someone posted a few weeks ago that Koochie had one of the lowest save percentages on medium and low danger shots. Yes that's every goalie but he's really bad this year.

Again he makes most of the great saves, if entertaining as hell to watch and is getting wins. He's just struggling a little with concentration this year.

Per Friedman, sounds like the Ducks and Canes have been talking a lot about Gibson and things could be coming to a head very soon.

Kooch has had a .914 sv% over his last 10 starts.

Which would put him about league average.

This year is a weird one for goalies. PK is Top 10 in wins, and though he’s just barely over .900 on the year, 4 other goalies have around his SV% (or worse) that are also in the Top 10 (Bob, Otter, Skinner and Hill)

Ryan O’Rielly might be the best option

??
I was pretty sure I just read that league average this year was at .900 so I checked and that is the case. For goalies with > 20 starts the median S% is .904 (Kooch is .902).

Interestingly, over the nine years since 2015-16, S% has decreased a couple percentage points each year from .915 in 2015-16 down to the current .900.

edit: ignore above. I'm guessing you actually meant that his recent .914 boosts his season S% up to league average, not that .914 is around league average (even though that used to be the case).

The Canes don't have to make a move at center if the player or asking price isn't there. If this offseason proved anything, the 2C market has a s**t-ton of landmines. The Stephenson and Lindholm contracts look like albatrosses already. Monahan looks like a hit for Columbus on the surface but they also aren't that deep with players who can produce offensively. Considering the Rangers' total collapse this year, the decision to let Trocheck sign there for 7 years w/ NMC looks prudent today. When you look at the alternatives, sticking with two guys in the 25 and under category who may not be ideal 2Cs but are still-developing as players is a better situation than being saddled with ridiculous UFA contracts with full NMCs.

I have no problem trading KK for Brock Nelson, who I think we could sign in the. off season for the same 6 million a year +/- 500k for 2 years to give Jarvis a chance to grow into the Center position (making him 24 at that time) and grooming Nadeau to move into his left wing position.

Not too surprised he can’t really defend at the nhl level. Stillman up? Or ghost is back I assume one of the 2
agreed....he was caved often in his shifts. I wonder if there is anyone else on Chicago that the Canes would call up if another D was hurt?

Brock Nelson has roughly the same production as KK this year with way more tread on the tires, for more money. I think if we make a trade for a 2C Ryan O'Reilly would be my target

I'd still happily take Nelson. I don't think he's cooked yet. He just plays for the Isles. Not that I'd turn down O'Reilly either. Even better if we can jettison Koko in these or any trades.

O'Reilly is the same age as Nelson both 33 years of age. And Nelson's stats are slightly better than Ryan's and Ryan has Stamkos

Also note that KK gets very little PP time. O'Reilly, IMO, makes the most sense in a vacuum. Nelson is a high-enough demand of a UFA commodity that he'll likely be in line for a long-term pact like Tanev got in spite of his numerical age. O'Reilly's contract is extremely favorable, however, which means that the trade competition for him might be robust.

O'Reilly also takes with him a leadership element (playoff tested) that is better than Nelson.

However, I don't want either. I'd rather Canes swing a deal for a younger 2C (whoever that is).

I don't care so much about age if the player is good and the contract is reasonable. I would totally trade for JT Miller this offseason, for example.
