Speculation: Roster Building Thread: Part XXI (Will these playoffs ever F'ing end?)

Ideally, by the start of 2026 season

______ - ______ - Laf
Cuylle - Miller - ______
______ - Trocheck - Berard
Edstrom - Carrick - Rempe

Conceivably Berard/Othmann/Sykora could end up filling the middle 6 wing spots, leaving just the 2 top line players

Imo Matthew Robertson needs to play in the NHL in a zone system and he will easily fill the 6d spot. But, they need to do something with him, he's about to be the next Ryan Graves if they don't.

NYR twitter is absolutely insane with this Robertson news. Cuylle + for Robertson? Holy f***ing brainrot. I wouldn't even really give up Lafreniere for Robertson either with what Laf showed us in the 24' run.

Robertson needs to go to a team that doesn't have a winger like him, like Chicago or something.
I wouldnt trade cuylle 1 for 1 for robertson. Cuylle is the faster, better hands version of brady tkachuk. Hes brady tkachuk without the pr machine

Yep, Robo can produce, but he never really drives play. He’s got very good hands, finds loose pucks and gets them to the net. The problem is he really need other players to establish possession, and usually get the puck to the net, or at least center of the ice first, and he capitalized on tons of second chance offense, broken plays or off the cycle where others have done much of the work.

He doesn’t create a lot of his own space or offense. If we were a swarming team like Carolina or Florida he would probably fit very well.

I could see Carolina and Dallas actually dancing again here after the Rantanen deal and Dallas even getting Stankoven back. Carolina needs more offense now, while their core is competitive, Dallas needs cap space, especially if they want to make some changes.

The problem with Robertson is he plays more like (a better) prime Jeff Skinner than the guys like Tkachuk that he’s being compared to. Despite good size, he’s a very finesse player and he’s a lot easier to shutdown in playoff type situations when he has less time and space. That 2/5 second difference in pace in the playoffs on every loose puck really neutralizes his style of play as he isn’t quick enough to get separated from pressuring D. I don’t hate Robertson but I watch enough of the Stars to feel comfortable when I predict he would be a disaster here that we would all regret. The fit on this roster is just really poor.
Yep. We need line drivers and playmakers. Finishers are easier to come by. In terms of forwards I want a playmaker on every line and a couple of north south grinders. Great if a guy can do it all, like JT Miller. But those guys are hard to come by.

What we want is to heavily scout some of the guys I’m about to mention to see if we feel strongly that their usage, place on depth chart, overall fit on their roster, etc. is holding them back and identify one or two who we feel has more upside than what they’ve shown so far. We want Bennett when he was on his way out of Calgary, not Bennett on a hefty contract after Florida milked his best years and health out of him.

Guys like Josh Doan, Ridley Greig, Shane Pinto, Morgan Geekie, Jake Neighbours, etc.

The list is a lot longer. Those are just examples.

He sucks right now, but he's still pretty young. He's not quite ready to play 80 NHL games, but there's at least a little something there. A crap team would probably give him a shot if he hypothetically got waived after camp going into next season.

Jones is probably ready to play a full season and try to latch onto a PP2 somewhere. Maybe somewhere else. I can't see him clearing hypothetical waivers. More than just the crap teams would consider a claim.

Those are the two 7D options right now. Vaaks is pretty firmly a #6, but not so much that you can't scratch him to give your 7D some reps.

If we could sneak Robertson through waivers to give him some more time to cook, I'd be pretty happy.

Just saw that Utah's 4th is up for grabs but they want a top 6 player in return...very interesting.
I'd try to come up with a package that involves the 4th overall pick from Utah coming the the Rangers in exchange for a package that would include Lafreniere and whatever else going back to Utah, then send no 12 overall to the Penguins, thus keeping the first next year in a better draft. Lafreniere would be a top 6 player for them; could use a change of scenery and gets out of the pressure of being a NYR top overall pick. A win for both teams where they're still competing/not trying to blow it up (But I would do Lafreniere for the 4th overall pick, but the Mammoth wouldn't.)

With Utah's new(ish) owners, they an spend, so they can take a significant contract back.

Genius.

"Genius"

More like disaster. Outside of the top 2-3 guys maybe, I dont think there's a single player in this draft who i can say with confidence will be better than what Lafreniere already is, and even then i have worries about how well Hagens will translate.

One thing to keep in mind about anything from sportsnet involving marner is that kyper is close friends with marner's dad, and I have no doubt at all that he will be part of helping enhance the market for marner bc he believes marner has been a victim and targeted unfairly in Toronto. Just keep this in mind as "rumours" come out about marner and who's interested and what they are willing to pay. There is believe that Paul marner "won't allow" Mitch to sign for anything less than Matthews signed for on aav. It's all become ego driven with the players on the leafs

The problem with all of those names is that they're still so young their teams arent giving them up just for a late first.

Bennett was a 4oa. And had been so bad he was moved for that little. You'd need to go back a few more years to find the right guy to match "we've given up" and upside.

I understand those are examples. And Im with you on concept, Im just saying think 25 not 22.

Turcotte might be someone in that range although his injury history makes him questionable.

Honestly Kakko is exactly the type of guy I'd have thought of as a similar Bennett reclamation project.

You’re not wrong, but I also don’t know if Greig or Geekie lands a 1st at all. Either way, them and a long list of other players should be watched closely by our professional scouts over the next year or two and if one shakes free or falls out of favor who we feel we’ve watched closely enough to be confident would benefit from the change of scenery, it’s the type of move to hunt for. While Kakko may have been a change of scenery candidate, I specifically listed players who have more of that high motor style of play that we are lacking.
